Routan SEL 4.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 105,000 miles

When you would drive down the interstate the vehicle would shift into first gear and wouldn't shift any more. After spending about $1000 to get the solenoid changed in the transmission it finally started to work correctly. I can't say if this is a long term fix or not because about 10,000 miles after getting that fixed the engine started to fail and we are now just getting rid of it for scrap value. PIECE OF JUNK. We only have 145,000 miles on it and it is worthless.

VW knows about this particular issue with the faulty TIPM box. How could they not? The 2009 VW Routans are essentially a Chrysler Town & Country Van. And guess what? Chrysler had a recall for the 2009 (and probably beyond) TIPM boxes in those vans. Why is VW not stepping up to do the right thing and ALSO issue a recall on this known malfunction? I have personally experienced several issues with this 2009 VW Routan: strange electrical issues including the "possessed" variety that other posters reference; vehicle not starting (making clicking noise but not starting); beyond awful brake pads and rotors (VW did not foresee that this vehicle was far heavier than the Chrysler T&C); and the latest adventure: my van refuses to shift gears -- it's an automatic transimission!!!!! VW needs to take ownership of this issue. I have babied my van, cared for it meticulously since day one (I am the original owner), and there is no reason for these major defects.

Routan SEL V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 64,200 miles

while driving, transmission suddenly stops shifting causing the vehicle to rev. Had to pull over, turn off and restart the vehicle. being that I've had other electrical telltale signs with this vehicle, I informed VW to check TIPM. They did not listen but wanted to replace entire Transmission Body. I asked a second opinion. Transmission specialists said only the solenoid was faulty, and yes, that TIPM could very well cause transmission to fail if electrical signals aren't being sent correctly. I replaced the solenoid but until the TIPM is fixed it will only continue to destroy everything on this vehicle. it is responsible for every power feature on this van and fuel pump and transmission as well. All signs tell of faulty Chrysler TIPM. I found out that my vehicle's TIPM is a Chrysler one. Vehicle is currently back at VW for repair for the third time in the past 5 weeks.
