Chrysler Recalls Cars With Failing Air Bags and Faltering Engines

Air bag and engine problems cause recall of 1,041 vehicles.

— Chrysler is recalling over 1,000 vehicles for air bag and engine problems.

Air Bag Failure

The 2013 Dodge Dart is on the list, but only 421 cars fitted with the Mopar 13 upfit package.  Chrysler said there were installation problems in seats modified with an upfitter.  Improper installation can cause the seat-mounted side air bags to malfunction.

Chrysler isn't aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem, and installation procedures have been updated to make sure the air bag works as it should.

Owners will be contacted in December, 2013, and asked to make a dealer appointment to have the air bag correctly installed.

Engine Damage

The remaining 620 recalled vehicles include the 2013 Dodge Avenger and Chrysler 200, plus the 2014 Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot, Dodge Journey, and the Fiat Fremont.

Chrysler says abrasive debris contaminated a batch of balance-shaft bearings and caused engine damage.  An internal investigation found some vehicles equipped with the 2.4-liter I-4 World Gas Engines experienced oil-pressure loss and main bearing failure.

Chrysler will contact affected owners in December, 2013.  The repair work will probably be completed in January, 2014, although Chrysler didn't say exactly how dealers will make the repair.

Any owners of the recalled vehicles listed above can contact Chrysler at 800-853-1403.
