BMW Recalls X3, X4, X5 and i8

BMW recalls cars and crossover SUVs to repair gas leaks, mirrors and seat belts.

— BMW has issued three recalls involving only about 300 vehicles, all newer model cars and crossover SUVs. The largest of the three recalls relates to the 2014 BMW i8 sports car.

2014 BMW i8

BMW says 223 model year 2014 BMW i8 cars can leak gas because of a bad weld on a bolt that is used to attach a ground cable between the gas tank and the body. BMW says the connecting bolt wasn't welded properly during assembly and any leaking gas could easily cause a fire.

The recalled 2014 BMW i8 sports cars were built between May 16, 2014, to September 16, 2014.

BMW dealers will replace the gas tanks on the recalled i8 cars.

2015 BMW X3 and BMW X4

BMW is recalling 53 model year 2015 X3 and X4 vehicles to replace the driver's side outside rear-view mirror. BMW says the mirror wasn't designed to let a driver know that vehicles seen in the mirror are closer than they appear.

Owners of the 2015 BMW X3 and X4 should have already received recall notices. BMW said its dealers will need to replace the exterior rear-view mirror with a mirror that meets U.S. safety standards.

2015 BMW X5

In the smallest recall, only 11 model year 2015 BMW X5 vehicles will be called back, and only those equipped with the optional rear comfort seat. BMW says the left rear seat belt attachment might break and fail to protect an occupant in a crash. The automaker blames a bad weld inside the left rear seat belt attachment.

As with the previous two recalls, owners of the 2015 BMW X5 have probably already received recall notifications to get the vehicles to a dealership to replace the rear seat belt frame.
