— Ford is recalling 433,000 cars and SUVs with engines that keep running even with the vehicles shut off. As with many recalls, you can blame this one on computerized gadgetry gone awry. Ford says the vehicles affected are the 2015 Focus, C-MAX and Escape cars and SUVs that need an update to the body control module software.
The automaker says a problem with the body control module can cause the engine to keep running after the ignition is turned off, even after removing the key. For push-button ignitions, the engine can keep running after pressing the "Engine Start/Stop" button.
Although an engine that keeps running after shut down could cause a host of problems, Ford says it's not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the defect.
The recalled cars and SUVs were built during specific manufacturing periods.
- 2015 Ford Focus: Built in Michigan - June 17, 2014, to June 12, 2015.
- 2015 Ford C-MAX: Built in Michigan - April 22, 2014, to June 12, 2015.
- 2015 Ford Escape: Built in Kentucky - April 1, 2014, to June 12, 2015.
Most of the vehicles are in the U.S. (374,781), with 52,180 in Canada and 5,135 in Mexico.
The recall is expected to begin July 20, 2015, and will have dealers updating the body control module software.
