Ford Recalls 452,000 Cars To Fix Gas Tank Leaks

— Ford is recalling nearly 452,000 vehicles in two recalls announced on the same day, the vast majority involving gas tanks that could leak and cause a fire.

Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan

Ford says 451,865 model year 2010-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan cars have gas tanks that can have pressure problems and experience leaks from the tanks.

Ford says the cause of the problem is a canister purge valve that doesn't work properly and can cause internal pressure changes inside the gas tank. The constant pressure changes can cause the top of the gas tank to crack and allow gas to leak.

Although a fire would easily be possible, the automaker says that hasn't happened yet. Ford also says there are no reports of accidents or injuries related to the defect.

The recalled 2010-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan cars were built from July 21, 2008, through March 4, 2011. About 411,205 cars are in the U.S., 33,605 in Canada and 7,055 are in Mexico.

Ford dealers will update the powertrain control module software and inspect the canister purge valve and gas tank for leaks. If needed, the purge valve and gas tank will be replaced.

Ford F-650

Ford says only 13 trucks are affected by the recall, but it's an important recall to those 13 truck owners. The automaker says a fully-loaded truck could roll away because of a problem in the steering column.

The 2016 Ford F-650 trucks were built with a steering column that uses the "park" position mechanism inside the automatic transmission. That mechanism could break if the truck's shift lever is in park and the truck is loaded and parked on a grade.

The recalled F-650 trucks were made July 29, 2015, through Sept. 3, 2015.

Ford hasn't said when the recalls will begin. Owners of the Ford F-650, Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles who have questions or concerns should call 866-436-7332. has complaints you can read about the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan.
