Chrysler Recalls Jeep Compass SUVs That May Roll Away

— Chrysler is recalling nearly 1,200 model year 2017 Jeep Compass SUVs because they could quit moving while driving or roll away when parked. The problem is a left front halfshaft that can break or disengage from the transmission.

In February 2017, Chrysler learned about an incident on a 2017 Jeep Compass where the left front halfshaft broke during assembly at the plant. The automaker sent the busted part to the supplier for testing, but the supplier couldn't find any problems with the part. However, there was evidence the halfshaft wasn't seated properly in the transmission when engine torque was applied.

Then in April, the automaker received a warranty claim filed after a 2017 Jeep Compass experienced a broken left front halfshaft after just 51 miles of driving. Then another warranty claim was filed after the Compass had only 12 miles on the odometer.

Between April 24 and April 26, two additional left front halfshafts broke and one additional left front halfshaft disengaged the transmission. On April 28, Chrysler opened an investigation and discovered even more complaints and warranty claims but no reports of crashes or injuries.

All the SUVs are equipped with 6-speed transmissions, and Chrysler says owners who park the vehicles without using the parking brakes are taking a chance the Jeep Compass SUVs will roll away.

The recall should begin June 23, 2017. Jeep dealers will replace left front halfshafts that are not installed properly in the transmissions.

Jeep Compass owners with questions should call the automaker at 800-853-1403 and use Chrysler's number for this recall, T26.
