Ford Fusion Loose Steering Wheel Bolts Investigated

Posted in Investigations

— Ford Fusion steering wheels that come loose or completely detach due to potential loose bolts will get examined during an investigation opened by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The feds will research 2014-2016 Ford Fusion cars after reports of steering wheels falling off or coming loose due to bolts that lose torque.

The subject bolts are used to attach the steering wheels to the Fusion steering columns, but a few drivers say mechanics had to re-tighten the bolts to keep the steering wheels attached to the cars.

The Georgia driver of a 2015 Ford Fusion said they were turning into a gas station when the steering wheel detached and fell into their lap, and a Wisconsin 2014 Fusion driver said the steering wheel came loose while driving.

Additionally, the driver of a 2016 Fusion complained the steering wheel came loose and after a trip to the mechanic, the driver learned the bolt holding the steering wheel to the column had loosened.

"I was able to turn, tilt, rotate, etc on multiple axis (left and right as normal, diagonal, up and down, forward and backward) up to one inch before resistance was met. The motion occurred in the upper part of the steering column, only affecting the steering wheel."

NHTSA didn't release more details about the investigation into the 841,000 model year 2014-2016 Ford Fusion cars, but CarComplaints.com will update our website with results of the investigation.

It's possible safety regulators could close the investigation after not finding evidence of a defect, or the investigation could be upgraded if NHTSA finds evidence of problems with the bolts.

It's also possible that safety regulators could find problems and recommend that Ford recall the cars.
