Mitsubishi Recalls Outlanders to Fix Door Latch Problems

— Mitsubishi is recalling more than 35,600 model year 2016 Outlander and Outlander Sport SUVs with doors that may open while the vehicles are moving.

Mitsubishi says components inside the door latches may be out of specification and cause the latches to fail in high temperatures.

The automaker learned about the problem in July 2016 when a report came in from Japan about a problem closing a rear Outlander door. Mitsubishi opened an investigation and by December 2016, 23 reports and warranty claims were received from the U.S. and Japan.

The investigation continued until March 2017 as engineers tested the affected door latches in an effort to duplicate the failures.

Mitsubishi engineers concluded the supplier had problems with the latches during manufacturing that caused the latches to fail under high ambient temperatures.

While a door opening while driving is a dangerous condition, Mitsubishi says it doesn't know of any accidents or injuries related to the door latch problems.

The automaker doesn't know when the Outlander and Outlander Sport door latch recall will begin, but dealers will need to eventually replace all the door latches.
