— Nissan is recalling more than 44,200 Titan trucks because of problems with the rear seat belts.

Nissan says 2016-2017 Nissan Titan Crew Cab and Titan XD Crew Cab trucks have rear seat belt assemblies that may not work good enough to protect an occupant's head.

The automaker says the head area is vulnerable because it is the part of the body that can hit the truck's D-ring bolt trim cap due to the seat belt assemblies.

On May 16, 2017, Nissan submitted a petition to NHTSA for a "Determination of Inconsequential Noncompliance to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 201 - Head Impact Protection." However, the automaker withdrew the petition and chose to order the recall.

The recall will begin September 26, 2017, when Nissan dealers will install material to the C-pillar finishers to absorb energy in a crash. In addition, the seat belt bolts and bolt caps will be replaced.
