— Model year 2012-2015 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid cars are recalled to repair problems that can cause reduced power, stalling and illuminated warning lights and messages.
Nearly 40,000 of the cars have electric vehicle fuses that can malfunction when the cars are repeatedly operated in electric mode under high-load driving, such as when the cars are traveling up long hills.
The cars are equipped with plug-in hybrid systems that contain hybrid batteries with electric vehicle fuses designed to protect the system from damage.
Toyota says it's possible the car will still be able to move forward, but the power will be reduced. But in other cases, the car will stop moving because the hybrid system shuts down.
Dealers will fix the problem by replacing the electric vehicle fuse once the Prius recall begins January 8, 2018.

A separate 2016 Prius recall includes six cars with capacitors within the hybrid systems that may not have been properly bolted to the inverter housings.
If the capacitor was not properly secured, vibrations from driving the Prius may damage the capacitor, shutting down the hybrid system and causing a loss of motive power.
Toyota dealers will replace the inverter once the recall begins in December 2017.
