Toyota Recalls 228,000 Tacoma Trucks to Fix Rear Differentials

— Toyota Tacoma trucks are recalled after the automaker discovered the rear differentials on 2016-2017 Tacomas can leak oil and possibly cause drivers to lose control.

Toyota says about 228,000 Tacoma trucks have rear differentials that can be damaged if oil starts to leak. A driver may hear noise once damage occurs and feel reduced propulsion, and the differential could seize if enough damage is done.

The recall is good news for consumers who have experienced rear differential problems, such as these two owners of Tacoma trucks.

"Toyota Corporate Customer Service claims the howling noise from the rear differential is by design and that they will not fix it. Toyota refuses to acknowledge that this is a problem and has provided no resolution." - 2016 Toyota Tacoma owner / McKinney, Texas

"Shortly after buying my SR access cab 4x4 I started to hear a whining noise in the rear of truck, not bad at first, at 3400 hundred rear differential went out, been waiting for dealer to get the parts. Toyota knows of this problem and told dealer to change the rear diff." - 2016 Toyota Tacoma owner / Seward, Pennsylvania

Toyota dealers will inspect the components of the rear differentials for signs of oil leaks and all fasteners will be re-tightened if no oil leaks are discovered. If dealers notice evidence of leaking oil, the rear differential gaskets will be replaced and new fasteners will be installed.

However, the rear differential carrier assemblies will be replaced if dealers see evidence of damage to the differentials.

Toyota says Tacoma owners will receive notices sometime in June 2017.

Toyota didn't say more about the Tacoma recall and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not released information, but concerned truck owners may call the automaker at 800-331-4331.

CarComplaints.com will update this page when NHTSA releases details about the recall.
