Ford Recalls 1.4 Million Cars For Steering Wheels That May Fall Off

Posted in Recalls

— Ford is recalling nearly 1.4 million cars because the steering wheels could detach from the steering columns.

The 2014-2018 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ cars may have steering wheel bolts that loosen over time and fail to hold the steering wheels.

Ford says it knows of two crashes and one injury caused by the loose bolts.

Ford breaks down the recall as 1,301,986 cars in the U.S., 62,479 in Canada and about 14,172 in Mexico.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hasn't released details about the recall, but the government had opened an investigation in October 2017 after reports of detached steering wheels in Ford Fusion cars.

Regulators said customers and dealers reported steering wheel bolts that couldn't maintain enough torque to keep the steering wheels attached to the steering columns.

Ford didn't say when the Fusion and Lincoln MKZ recall will begin, but dealers will replace the steering wheel bolts with longer bolts and larger nylon patches to hold the bolts in place.

The Fusion was also recalled today for problems with clutch pressure plates that could lead to engine compartment fires.
