GM Recalls Chevy Express and GMC Sierra Over Fire Dangers

— General Motors is recalling about 30,300 model year 2016-2018 Chevrolet Express and GMC Sierra vans and trucks equipped with single, manual rear climate control modules.

If the temperature is set to maximum heat or the mode knob is set to maximum floor vent and an electrical short occurs, components inside the modules may overheat and catch fire.

A short-circuit will allow current to flow through the controls and cause the terminal insulation to burn and cause a fire in the headliner. Drivers may notice non-working temperature or mode controls in the rear climate control modules.

To reduce risk of fire until the vehicles are repaired, GM says to set the rear HVAC control knobs so the middle controls for vent positions and far right controls for heat are rotated to the mid-point positions.

GM doesn't know when the recall will begin, but Chevy and GMC dealers will remove the electrical insulation from the wiring connectors within the climate control modules.

Chevrolet Express and GMC Sierra owners with concerns should call Chevrolet at 800-222-1020 or GMC at 800-462-8782 and ask about recall number 18299.
