Whenever it rains or there is high humidity, the power steering completely locks up. I was almost in an accident yesterday due to this, and have had the problem before also. This is a serious defect. I have been to the dealership and they claim there is no recall or known way to fix it.

The contact owns a 2004 Cadillac Deville. The contact was driving approximately 40 mph in rainy weather conditions. The power steering failed without warning. The steering operation resumed to normal after waiting a few seconds. The contact stated that the failure had occurred four times in one day. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the technician stated that the vehicle was not under warranty and the power steering belt could be replaced at the owner's expense. Power steering failed repeatedly during rainy weather.

I have had continuous issues with my steering on the certified used vehicle which I bought in 2006. Over the last 6 to 9 months the steering has started to fail when it is raining. It is momentary, but the car cannot be controlled. I brought my car to tom peacock Cadillac in houston - it is still under warranty - and they failed to look at my steering and sent me home w/out even addressing it - although the paperwork shows that I complained about it and wanted it looked at. I've sent a complaint letter on 10/6 and have had no response. I am filing a complaint with the better business bureau. This could cause an accident when the steering fails, as the car literally cannot be steered.

Power steering failed during rainy weather.
- Fort Worth, TX, USA
Rainy season has started in Florida. I ran our 2004 Deville through a very shallow puddle on the 14th of may, and immediately lost the ability to turn the steering wheel in either direction. Using muscles power it was almost impossible to turn the wheel. Fortunately we were in a grocery store parking lot with no traffic.

During rainy weather or high humidity, the steering on my 2004 Cadillac fails. This has caused several near-collisions. The Cadillac dealer told me that this is a design defect on this model. Something must be done before I or someone else gets hurt or killed!

Every time I drive during rainy weather, the power steering of my 2004 Cadillac Deville malfunctions. I have had several near-crashes because I was unable to turn the steering wheel. When this happens, I must unexpectedly exert a lot of strength to turn the wheel. This problem is definitely a safety hazard. I contacted my authorized Cadillac dealer and was told that the cause for the problem is the peculiar design of this vehicle. When the belt gets wet or moist, it slips on the pulleys and ceases to turn them, causing the power steering pump to fail. The dealer was not able to correct this design defect. I request that this particular model be recalled because of the repetitive failure of the power steering system. This is a recurring problem and has happened again today three times. Please instruct General Motors to correct this serious safety hazard before somebody gets killed or is seriously injured.

I own a 2004 Cadillac Deville. Every time I drive through in heavy rain or through standing water in the road, the power steering malfunctions. I have had several near-crashes because I was unable to turn the steering wheel quickly. When this happens, I must unexpectedly exert a lot of strength to turn the wheel. This problem is definitely a safety hazard. I contacted my authorized Cadillac dealer and was told that the cause for the problem is the peculiar design of this vehicle which directs water from the road to the belt which drives the fan, alternator and the power steering pump. When the belt gets soaked with water, it slips on the pulleys and ceases to turn them, causing the systems connected to the belt to fail. The dealer was not able to correct this design defect. I request that this particular model be recalled because of the potential failure of the power steering system. Updated 05/06/09.
