My steering wheel locks up out of the blue in the highway or anywhere, I have to shut the car down and re-start it so it can be operational again but I have been close to get into a serious accident because of this problem. It happens repeatedly without warning.

My car made a noise and beeped at me and power steering came lighting up on the dash. My car then revved up to 6000 rpms and caused me to sway in the middle of traffic and I had to pull the car over, fearing I was going to crash into other cars. I will have to replace the steering column which includes the sensor that helps with power steering. It occurs often. I will be fine for a ride but then I get back in it and start driving and get up to 30 of 40 mph and power-steering will come up on my dash and all of my instruments go whack. My speedometer goes to 0 and the engine revs but doesn't increase speed. It will cost anywhere from 1250 dollars and 1800 dollars to fix this problem at my local dealership.

On Friday August 25th 2009 I was driving my car when all of a sudden the power steering indicator came on in my car and immediately the power steering went out while I was driving. On Tuesday August 29th 2009 I had my mechanic look at the problem and discovered that my 2005 Chevy Cobalt has an electric power steering system and it can only be fixed by replacing the entire steering column. I immediately contacted GM Chevrolet to inform them and they stated that there has been no recall scheduled for the 2005 or 2006 Chevy Cobalt. I did an internet search on the Chevy Cobalt and discovered that power steering going out is a common problem among Chevy Cobalt owners and Chevy is failing to do anything about it. This is a safety matter because the power steering will go out at random and Chevy says that it will cost $800 just for the part not including labor cost. This is a manufacturing error that Chevy needs to correct.
