Steering wheel get stuck was repaired in the same year purchased in 08 now the same problem service said it will cost 1,000 dollars I can not afford to repair it now what do I do? the same problem 2 times is there a defect in the part.

The 2006 Chevy Cobalt power steering, the problem is while you are driving the power steering will fail and you would have to pull over to change the fuse or turn the car off and then back on to correct the problem. That is a serious problem while traveling on the interstate. GM has to know about this problem but Chevy dealers are charging people over eight hundred dollar to correct this issue. This is on vehicle with less than 40K.

There have been several random instances at random speeds that my power steering ceases to work. The dic will display "power steering" and then the power steering assist goes away. It then becomes difficult to maneuver the vehicle. This is unsafe because of course I need to be able to control my car! there is a tsb on this issue, number 070232007, but no recall. There needs to be a recall before someone is really injured or killed. I haven't taken the car to the dealer yet because I am strong enough to control the car without the power steering but it still should be fixed by GM.

Power steering failed during drive and lock up the steering wheel completely. Steering wheel was very hard to steer since it is a all electronic power steering. I had to pull over during traffic and shut off the vehicle in order to re-initialize the power steering. I was able to gain control of the vehicle.

I've done my research and this model is having tons of these problems. This is extremely dangerous and I wish for GM to refund and recall this model. Its the same as the cavalier just had to many problems with it and so they had to change the name. What a cheap trick by the big car manufacturers.

We bought this 2006 Cobalt certified used, for our daughter for school last year. It was fine until the other day she was driving and while making a right turn the power steering light came on and there was no power steering. She had to lock the brakes in order too not hit another car head on. Her boyfriend was with her so he could turn the wheel to get it to the side of the street. She turned the car off and started it again and the steering worked for a couple of blocks and went out again. Now everytime you start it goes out in a couple of seconds. I researched this problem on the internet and found many complaints. The car has only 50220 miles, so of course it is out of warranty. I got in contact with someone from the company that makes the steering column and he said to take it to the dealer and they should take care of it. So I took it to the dealer and they sent it in to GM, I waited a week for an answer. They called back and said GM was not aware of any problems and they would not assist. I am in contact with Chevy customer service waiting for an answer. The car has been sitting for two weeks.

The contact filed a complaint with the manufacturer and was informed that a district specialist would call him on June 23, 2009. The contact has not yet received a call. The failure mileage was 24,000 and current mileage was 25,000.

I purchased a 2006 Chevy Cobalt in June of 2007 it was a new car. There has been no recalls for any parts concerning the power steering. On June 18, 2009 on my dash board had a dic message come up staying power steering and I completely lost control of the power steering in the car. Thank goodness I did not have an accident, but it made the car very difficult to turn or control. It happened twice. After I shut the off it resumed normal driving. Then it happened again about 20 minutes later. I believe this is a safety issue and the GM corporation should be aware of this and take responsibility for fixing these errors. On June 19, 2009, I took my car to licensed mechanic and they said there is a short in the power steering motor. The mechanic also stated that he has had several Chevy in the shop for the same problem. The part is available but it will cost around a $1000 dollars to fix with parts and labor, which it is our of my budget with the state of our economy. I also did research on the internet and found many other individuals with the same problems with their Chevy and power steering. It is very frightening when their are two small children in the backseat of the car as well.

Steering failure in the Chevrolet Cobalt. I was driving and the power steering went out. Took car in to the Chevrolet dealers services department, I was told that it was the intermediate steering shaft, I was told that this part was replaced but when they test drove the car they found the steering to be impossible to turn. They released the car back to us without solving the problem. I find this to be troubling since this is their product. This is a very serious problem and GM should be liable for this problem. There should a recall on the steering column in the Cobalt, before someone is killed.
