problem #97

I had noticed the faint odor of gas fumes after the car was parked for a few days but the smell was not strong enough to take action. Approximately six months later on March 24, 2016, new rear tires were installed on the car at a local tire dealer and the technician noticed the gas leak near the drivers side fuel tank. I took the car to the GM dealership and they diagnosed the fuel leak was not caused by any abuse, modifications, or accidental contact such as rocks. The failure was a fit issue between the tank and fuel line caused by heat over time.

Car has 20,000 miles and has developed a gas smell while parked in a garage. It seems to be from the right rear of the car. When the system is below 1/2 full the smell is less apparent.. there is no visible leak in the fuel tank area. I have replaced the cross over pipe seals and fuel pump "O" rings. Problem is still present. Was not aware of history of possible defective plastic on the fuel pump fittings. I will run tank below 1/2 to see if smell goes away. Will most likely remove again or address with my extended warranty as with more research this seems to be a quite common problem and potentially serious. I must let car sit outside for awhile and allow fuel fumes to diminish before I feel comfortable putting car in garage. This smell can be very heavy when left in a closed area right after driving. I can still smell fuel fumes while driving.

Following refueling, the cabin of the car fills with gasoline fumes. In most cases, the car most be allowed to air-out for hours prior to driving or storing in the garage. The quantity and concentration of fumes seems to be a significant fire risk. As it is transient, the dealer is not able to pinpoint, thus fix, the problem. This is a significant safety issue that warrants regulatory involvement!

After a fuel fill up and parking the 2008 Corvette in the garage there is a strong gasoline smell in the garage and inside the vehicle. If I do not drive for a few days the smell starts to dissipate, but after I drive it will be strong again until the fuel level drops. My concern is the safety issue with the possibility of a fire.

While the vehicle is parked, especially after filling up the gas tank, the vehicle emits the strong smell of gasoline. The smell of gasoline fills my garage when the vehicle is parked overnight. The concern is that the vehicle may catch fire if exposed to a spark or some other type of heat source such as the vehicle's exhaust. According to the dealership there is no recall for this issue.

Fuel tank cracking. Fuel tank cracked at the interface with the fuel module. Emits raw gasoline fumes while driving and parked. Smell so bad in garage that door must be opened. In my car, no spots on floor have been present. Chevrolet needs to issue a recall before someone is burned up or a house is destroyed, including occupants. Is that what is to be required before recall is issued?

When I have over half a tank of fuel in the car it wreaks of raw fuel. It's most noticeable around the gas fill opening at the left rear quarter panel. If the car sits with the windows up I have to air out the cockpit before I drive it due to accumulated gas fumes. These fumes are due to an active leak that is present at all times when the fuel tank is ~1/2 full or more. This condition seems to be prevalent as there are countless complaints registered in the various web forums and youtube. It's apparently due to fuel accumulating on the exterior of the fuel tank where the fuel line exits the tank. That fitting fatigues and cracks over time. I can't believe this hasn't been addressed as a safety and health concern and/or Chevrolet has not offered to repair this condition. Not only is it an obvious fire hazard but gas fumes are a known carcinogen. It a shame that you have to risk your property and health or spend $1000+ to repair a manufacturer defect.

Driver's side fuel tank cracked and leaking. Drive train had to be dropped to allow tank to be removed. Tank is $900 + and is not covered by any warranty. New tank is on backorder with edt of 2-3 weeks. Chevrolet will not cover cost of the tank under the extended warranty. There are literally hundreds of 2008 Corvettes with this serious problem. Loaner car is covered for only 5 days. This tank should be recalled as it is a serious, dangerous recurring problem. Leaks inside garages and could burn down home with car. Someone needs to address this problem immediately. Chevrolet should not only be required to cover cost of the replacement tank and inconvenience caused by backorder of replacement parts that may be defective also.

On 01/10/2016 my 2008 Corvette was parked in my garage overnight with a full to 3/4 full gas tank. The next morning there was strong smell of gasoline in my garage. The smell was coming from my Corvette. The smell continued for 2 more nights. On or about 01/15/2016 I took my Corvette to the local dealership, glendora chev. It was determined there that fuel leak was at the top of the gas tank. This would cost $2300-$2500 to repair. Due to a lack of parts by the GM supplier due to an excessive number of fuel tank failures similar to mine. I have not had my car nearly a month and parts that have been sent have failed or defective. I feel this is a GM's failure to use quality part suppliers and maintain a high level of oversight to prevent these problems from happening in the first place. Seems like GM has not learned from their past mistakes.

Strong smell of gas once the tank is filled over the 1/2 way mark. Mechanic advises me of a leak in driver side tank. Numerous posting of same problem on Corvette forum.com. Cannot park car in garage due to high gas vapors. Cannot operate car when tank is full due to strong vapors inside car. Google advises many people having same issues. Estimated cost to repair is $2500-3000. This problem began early 2015 and has progressed to its current stage. Note: Corvette's use a saddle bag gas tank and is 2 bags connected. It appears the leak is where the 2 tanks connect.... updated 08/23/16 the consumer stated the vehicle was repaired. Updated 3/30/2017 the consumer requested iformation concerning a par submition.

When filling the car with fuel above the half way mark a strong odor of gas can be smelled. Over night the smell is so strong in the garage you need to leave the door cracked open to vent the fumes. No visible leak is detected on the ground or near filler neck. After drive the car and gas is less than half a tank the ordor can not be detected.

There is a bad fuel leak that produces horrible amounts of gas vapor that fill any area the vehicle is parked in as well the fuel leaks down the driver rear quarter panel to the hot exhaust. This situation has the potential to be very devastating not only to property but also to the operator while driving the vehicle. It is a very unsafe condition. The vehicle is currently getting inspected at the dealership

Concern: Fuel smell / leak and fuel system check engine light when car is parked. On 1/05/2016 I took my 2008 Corvette to our local dealer, courtesy Chevrolet in phoenix, AZ because of a fuel leak and fuel smell I discovered on the drivers side gas tank. After they diagnosed the problems they told me the fuel pump on the drivers side was cracked and leaking fuel down the side of the tank. Additionally, the fuel sensor in the passenger side gas tank was defective causing a check engine light and causing the fuel gauge to read zero gas in the tank intermittently (tank is actually half full). The dealer also said the crossover tube that connects the left and right gas tanks needs to be replaced. The dealer said this is a significant safety issue and to not drive the car until the fuel system is repaired because the hot exhaust pipe routes right next to where the gas is leaking down the gas tank. Their repair estimate is $3187. My car has 80K miles on it and is out of standard warranty so GM won't cover the repair costs. It appears that many C6 generation Corvettes have this same fuel system safety issue from what I have read on the online Corvette forums. GM/Chevrolet needs to issue a recall on this well document fuel system issue, it is a major safety concern.

Fuel smell coming from fuel tank, when tank is more than 1/2 full, inside of car smells of gasoline. When car sits in garage it fills the garage with fumes, very dangerous and it seems like I am 1 of many with the same problem on the C6 Corvette. Seems like the fuel tank seems are splitting from what everyone has said.

When the car is parked and the engine is off, there is a strong and persistent fuel vapor/fuel odor coming from left rear quarter panel area of the car near the fuel filler door and left rear wheel well. Odor does not seem to be coming from the fuel filler port or fuel filler cap. Fuel filler neck hose and vapor return line behind the fuel filler port appear to be dry and connections are secure. No evidence of fuel leaking from the fuel filler neck or left fuel tank; no fuel leaking onto the ground. No previous fuel spills from refueling. Fuel vapor odor fills up the garage when parked in there for several hours.
