At 40,000 miles my 2001 Impala LS had a transmission failure. Love Chevrolet, Monterey, California, had flushed and refilled the transmission with new fluid at 36,000 miles per the owner's manual maintenance schedule. The car had been driven easily--mostly highway miles--up till transmission failure. GM said the car did not have any warranty of any sort after 36,000 miles and told me I'd be better off using AAMCO to replace the transmission (via a parts kit) because GM's rebuilt transmissions generally have a fail rate of at least 50%. I paid the money for an AAMCO rebuild with a 3-year warranty, so far no trouble.
This will be my last GM vehicle. Not only did GM warn me against using their products, they didn't offer to help with any of my expenses despite being approximately 4000 miles out of warranty AND doing the recommended service on the transmission at the recommended time. BOO GM!!

Total Transmission failure. I would encourage all who purchase new or used vehicles to really check on the internet for complaints prior to purchasing a vehicle. Don't go to Consumer Reports as they don't OWN the cars that they are testing. If I had done this. I clearly would not have bought a 2001 Chevrolet Impala LS. The problems with the 4T65E transmission that these cars come with is endless! The only good thing that I have seen thus far is that no one has been killed in a traffic accident due to complete transmission gear failure. My fear is that someone will have to die before GM gets the order to issue a recall on this transmission and correct the problem. My car only has 67,000 miles and still looks and drives like it is new. I have been faithful with respect to the maintenance recommendations from the manufacturer on this car. I am so very disapointed. I will NEVER buy another GM or other make vehicle without first typing in the search engine auto complaints first!

Took care to dealer for surging problem. Dealer put in oxygen sensor, told us OnStar was worthless, took back to dealer for same problem. This time, dealer wanted to install Power Control Module ($400+), told dealer no, then they said it was under warranty. Still have same problem. Opened hood, found loose parts not re-connected. Took to second dealer. Said even before hooking up, it was probably the transmission. Had had lots of problems with these trannys. Codes said torque converter/valve body problem. Took to transmission shop, opened pan, brass, alluminum and steel fillings. Need tranny rebuilt completely. Tranny shop reports multiple problems with this trannsmission. But it is one of the best ones that Chevy makes!

Transmission failed when trying to pass a vehicle on a two lane highway. Got back in our lane in the nick of time. Had transmission fluid changed, noticed shavings. It got to the point where it slipped constantly over the next few days. Had transmission replaced. Was told old transmission was shot. This is the first major complaint we have had since we bought it new. But it was a scary one.
