Have the same speedometer haywire problem as the others reported. Encourage everyone having the problem to report at NTSB to force a GM recall.
- Helming T., Thousand Oaks, CA, US
If this many people have the same problem it should have a recall. Speedometer doesn't work and don't have the money to fix it.

Just adding one more Impala speedometer complaint. With the onset of colder weather the speedometer started reading over 120 when driving 50. The fix of turing on & off the key works temporarily. But it acts up again after a few miles. Is GM ever going to do something about this obvious manufacturerer's defect? I will use the GPS until they do. I will seriously consider buying something other than a GM car next time. Are you listening GM?

It is the most painful pain i have ever had it in my whole life the fucken idiot speedometer, i changed it and then after one year or so the same problem again it is not working. I went to buy another one new from the one of the Chevy dealers they don't carry any new Chevy impala speedometers, anyways it is pain in the ass

So, yes, my speedometer also went bizerk. Finding this website was somewhat depressing and somewhat calming. Don't drive my car much since the speedometer went out, luckily we have other vehicles. My brother-in-law is a mechanic and put the car on the computer, computer showed no error messages. He told me it was probably the instrument panel...I have to agree after reading all the complaints on this website. I also will contact the NHTSA and the BBB and GM customer service. Something needs to be done about this. For now I have a son-in-law that is pretty handy dandy and will remedy the problem through the "stepper motor" suggestion. Thank you for the info.
This is my LAST GM product! Wanted a Jeep, Guess it'll be a Nissan or Honda!!

It started out the speedometer would work sometimes at first, now it doesn't work at all. So I use my GPS system to tell me how fast I am going.

TODAY IM ON THE EXPRESSWAY AND NOTICED I WAS GOING 90 MILES SO U SLOW DOWN THEN I REALIZED THAT WHEN I SLOWED DOWN THE SPEEDOMETER SAYS 110 ON A RESIDENTIAL BLOCK I DONT THINK SO-I HAVENT CHECK PRICES YET BUT IM DAMN SURE GOING TO CALL GM AND THE DEALERSHIP I GOT IT FROM AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS I ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR 4 MONTHS WILL KEEP U POSTED
- Tameka F., Phila, PA, US
Sure like this car but hate the aggravation that occurs when you don't get any warning that something is about to happen.... seems to me just as all the other post is that it worked and then it stopped working. mine stopped 0 mph .. funny thing is
I was going 55mph. and it started its defunking at below 0 then the next time I turned the car on at a stand still it read 75/80 mph some where in the middle.. I sure do need it fixed....and don't feel like its my fault.especially since it has such low mileage for being 5 years old. GM needs to Step up . and make things right..

Of course Chevy isn't doing sh*t about it. Of course it isn't under warranty Of course there is almost 100 other complaints and there is no recall information. This is such a problem that the guy at my shop was aware but that Chevy isn't claiming it.

My speedometer is all over the place. As long as I'm on the gas its fine but as soon as I lift it will drop down to thirty and back to sixty. I really don't want to put anymore money into this 2004 impala. I really don't think I can buy another American car. With 30k on it I had to replace the water pump, intake gasket, and the mass air sensor. I would have been better off going to an auction, at least I wouldn't have had a car note for a lemon
- Ryan R., Temple Hills, MD, US
I got a speeding ticket because of this, ticket cost $190.00.My insurance went up $350/per year.Installed GPS.
- Bill N., Wyoming, MN, US
I did like chevys but now i hate the gm junk i will never buy another gm junk.
speedometer stopped working at 80000 miles.
gm junk should stop making cars

I just bought this car 4 weeks ago. The speedometer stopped working once on a long trip. Then it started working fine for 3 weeks. Now it is back and I went to the internet to see if it was a known problem. I see from the comments that this is a BIG problem that is experienced by many. I consider this to be a real severe safety issue that GM should do something about. I wish I had come to visit this site before my warranty expired. I might have been able to get it fixed under warranty but I have NEVER had an issue with a speedometer on any vehicle I have ever owned. It is something that should just work! You would think that after the hundreds of millions of them being manufactured this would be one of the most reliable components in the car.
- Keith F., Hudson, NH, US
Low mileage vehicle (belonged to my mother), less than 27,000 miles. Speedometer gone wacko, can't get a reliable indication . Me very annoyed and wife very nervous. Thanks, GM! You suck.
- Larry G., Saline, MI, US
works until 50 miles per hour, after that the speed is erratic might read from 100 to 0 miles per hour
- jread, Memphis, TN, US
called chevrolet twice, they said no recall on vehicle guess I got stuck with a lemon also.

I really love my Impala LX but repairs/breaks/steering/speedometer have been a p.i.t.a. !My windshield shattered the first year from a small stone flying off a dump truck!! Cheap glass or what?
Now when I am unemployed, broke, behind on credit card payments etc etc the damn speedometer goes crazy.Like who has $600 to pay for this aggravation? I read all the 110 complaints and agree that GM should have put out a RECALL on these crappy auto parts! I am going on the suggested websites and filing my complaints, just to do my female American duty. After all, my tax dollars just went to GM to bail them out and now the mismanaged corp has filed for Bankruptcy!!! OMG!!! (They should have hired ME as their CEO, !!!)
Previously, I owned a 2000 Blazer V6 which I gave to my 21 yo son, and everything imaginable went wrong with it - I almost had to file for bankruptcy while paying all the incompetent mechanics who could NEVER figure out one problem after another. Finally, I junked the damn thing! And I thought Chevy's were supposed to last forever! My Impala has made a nightmare out of my American Dream! In 1967, I had a Chevy Malibu and those cars are still Classic and running on the streets!
Please join with all others having mechanical problems, and go the designated websites to file your complaints. And call GM and pester them til you're blue in the face.
Why should we AMERICANS have to buy cars from the Japanese and Germans - they all hate us!!

The Speedometer stop working one day and then after a couple of weeks it starts to act nuts. It would show unbelievable speed like if i go in 10 it would show 90 or 120......We are using our GPS for now...but its very inconvenient when we go for short drives.....
We did go and ask the dealership about this and they gave an estimate for about 500 bucks.Thats just crazy. Some days the needle moves ,and on some it sleeps. Hope GM does a recall on 2004 Impala for this problem.
- Larry S., Midland, GA, US
Tach started the downhill problem with the Gauge cluster... Didn't mind as it is an automatic.Within a month or so the speedometer started going nuts, I have the same issues as complaints 1-100+. I think the GPS is going to be a good short term fix but am crossing my fingers for the recall. I'm tired or listening for shift points and "keeping up with the flow". I will say that the warmer weather has got it working intermittently. Also, I don't know if it's related but... the rear defroster makes the radio full of static and now the windshield wipers are starting to have a mind of the own some times. On to Honda...

MY 1st Chevrolet and it will be my LAST one got a great deal on an 04 Impala SS Limited Edition after 100 miles of driving I noticed that my speedometer was not working. After reading some of the others complaints I too will have to join the 500.00club I wonder if we could get a Bailout thanks GM
