To replace the sensor the transmission side casing has to be pulled. The cost to fix is more labor intense than the cost of the part.

I BOUGHT A HIGH END GPS THAT DOES EVERYTHING FOR $330, HALF THE COST OF GETTING SPEEDOMETER FIXED BY GM, DON'T PAY GM FOR A FACTORY DEFAULT. YOU CAN GET A NICE GPS THAT SHOWS THE SPEED STARTING AT $150 DOLLARS, FORGET YOUR SPEEDOMETER.

It is not just the fact Chevy has the defective parts or engineering. It is the fact that the rich bastards don't want you to fix it. No Repair Manual - from any vendor is a Union of Socialists (Much like Russia) that are bent on a futal lord system. Remove all independence from people. Even their cars.

Speedometer reads 120 when car is at rest. It first started reading incorrect and appeared to be sticking as it increased, then starting reading 105 when I was going about 65. Called Chevy dealer, said would probably be $400 to replace entire cluster over phone. $95 to diagnose. Will never buy Chevy again and will let others know of this experience. Before this started, turn signals stopped working for a day and then ac wouldn't come another day. Sounds like there is a recall type problem here that GM is not taking care of.

The speedometer is schizophrenic. Sometimes works great, sometimes will be either drastically high or low or not work at all. The hotter the weather the worse the performance.

I to am having this problem with my impala... and like many others i have contacted General Motors and they didn't seem to care...i am thinking about reporting them to the BBB (Better Business Bureau) hopefully this will push for an recall

both the speedometer and tachometer are going crazy and not working properly. Need to know if there is anywhere I can get this fixed, it seems to be a common problem. I s GM doing anything about this?
- Tony A., Oviedo, FL, US
This is really a big issue as the car does not have that many miles on it and now I can't even tell how fast I am going!!
- Karen I., Collinsville, OK, US
Stinks... first the fuel gauge went out 2 days ago, and then the speedometer won't go below 60. It only goes up. My warranty is expired so I'm not sure what I'm going to do...
- adela, San Marcos, TX, US
Speedometer is not correct sometimes. It may show 45 mph when the car is moving 75 mph, or correctly when moving 45 mph. I'm never sure if the speedometer is showing the correct speed.... there is no indication of when it's accurate or not... This is a safety concern. Looks like there are lots of others with the same model, same complaint.

The needle was on 40 for a couple of days then went back to normal then a week later was pinned on 140 then went back to normal again. Got fixed yesterday good way to get a ticket that would have really suck. Get it it will come back to haunt you if you don't.

I as well called GM and they do not care. I took my car to the dealership and they offered no help. I refuse to pay for this problem. Chevy needs to get it together and recall the problem. Please let me know if they do a recall.
- Michael D., Dayton, OH, US
I can understand GM not wanting to recall thousands of vehicles due to the cost but they should at least have the decency to cover the cost for people who have a problem and bring it to the dealership to be handled. I love so many things about the Impala but I think its eventual replacement will be a Hyundai.

Initially the speedometer would read 90 when the car was stopped or wouldn't drop below 20. It was intermittent and then all at once it stopped. I had to pay to replace all of the gauges and it wasn't cheap. The car seems to have weird sorts of electrical problems like the headlights going completely out when I switch from brights to low beams. This car is almost paid off, but I don't think I would buy another Chevy vehicle.

The Speedometer is Stuck at 20 mph. It used to fix by flipping the ignition on and off, but now it is just stuck.
- Kavi P., Lubbock, TX, US
WELL i do love this car even though there are a hundred in my area, but this is pissing me off, i have to follow someone to work, to make sure i'm going the right speed, i travel often for work, and i'm one speeding ticket away from a suspension, so more often than not i'm going way under the speed limit

Just as everyone else, the instrument panel went out one by one. 1st, the temperature gauge, 2nd, the speedometer, 3rd, the fuel gauge. It does exactly like all the other complaints. One day after work, the speedometer was reading 80 mph at a red light. Right now, it is in the shop and they are having a hard time determining the fix. So far, they have replaced the wrong part and said no charge to me because it did not fix anything. I will let them know about the instrument panel cluster that I read about on here. If they will listen to me. They have already had the car for 3 days. I am catching rides to work because they told me that it is not good to drive without the speedometer working. It drive fine until.....it started to whine so at that time I parked it for a month because i did not want to destroy anything if I could help it. On to the next complaint.

Speedometer at first was not showing the correct speed, the dealer acted like they did not believe me when I called, then it went out all together, then the anti lock brake system light came on and quit working, then had i had no dash lights or instrument panel. They replaced the instrument panel computer.

I took my Impala to the dealership and was told (very nastily) that I would have to pay $800 to have this problem repaired since it's out of warranty. There is no recall on this problem and there should be. I have contacted Chevrolet directly and was told that if I have it repaired, I should keep the receipt in the event it does turn into a recall...then they wished me luck! That's it!

my wife and i was on our way back home today after a short. i noticed my speedometer was reading 55 and it felt like we were barely moving. i pulled over to the side of the road and stopped, the speedometer read 15 miles an hour.. so we continued on our way home, and it is still stuck on 15. i will get checked out as soon as possible. the reason that i'm complaining is that i just learned of your web site by browsing on my pc for warranty's on 2004 impala's. i read a lot of the complaint's about people complaining about there impala's. i noticed that i have or have had the same problems that they have, or have had, i wish them the best these impala's are all LEMON'S will not buy another one!!! thinking of trying toyota!!! will go now. may GOD bless everyone that has problem's with these IMPALA'S. GM needs to tighten up.....
