like the others, my speedometer is sometimes too high (110mph to work while not passing one sole on a crowded highway) sometimes too low (less than zero). Can't afford $100 to fix the problem much less the 400-500 mentioned on this site. Would really appreciate GM stepping up and fixing the problem since this is evidently pretty prevalent. I have talked to many Impala owners with the same problem. STEP UP GM!

Just as all the others- 2004 Impala LS with a schizophrenic speedometer and tach. Read a suggestion to turn key to Accessory position, put trans in R, turn key on and off repeatedly. Speedometer back to normal for now. Called GM, as usual they won't do a recall until forced or until someone dies. They said there is no recall, I got the 12 year old that I talked to to admit that he personally has had many calls on this issue. All they would tell me was to take it to a GM dealership (and bend over). I've been a loyal GM buyer all my driving life- Olds, Pontiac, Chevy, they've progressively become just money-pit pieces of dung. Congratulations UAW, GM will soon be deceased. I'm done! There is just no reason left for me to buy GM or American anymore. They're all the same. Oh by the way, I had a 99 Olds Intrigue with the same speedometer/cluster problem that GM would never own up to either.

I have just bought a GM certified 2004 Chevy Impala Now the Cluster in the speed odometer is out and is going to cost $500.00 . I made a complaint in nov 2007 - still waiting to hear back from GM. If you having the same problem Call general motors to complain. Its a safety Issue.

Driving home on expressway at night, speedometer indicator needle began to drop, even tho I did not slow down. Needle bounced up and down but slowly dropped beyond zero and remained there. Next day speedometer worked OK with in town driving. Next time out on the road after 30 or so minutes of driving speedometer began to sink again with same result as first time problem explained. A call to the dealer mechanic resulted in "Bring in the car, you need cluster components replaced, cost $505.00. If not repaired problem will worsen until all gauges stop working". Repair not under warranty. This sucks out loud!!! Could it be the cable? Or sensor in transmission? Dealer wasn't even willing to do anything but the expensive repair. Now I find that MANY others are having the same problem.

My speedometer went nuts. While on the highway--speedometer stayed at 70mph and never decreased then i slowed down and it continued to go up when i accelerated--need le ended up straight down pointing at the park/drive icons. Big safety issue. Luckily for me my car was a gm certified used vehicle with a 36,000+3,000 warranty. Took car in they replaced the cluster . Took 5 days to order part. Have not tested speedometer on highway yet. I'm hoping they are not replacing the cluster with the same poor design as before. There has a been a recall on 2003 and 2004 Chevy speedometer clusters on the Silverado and avalanche. Hope they recall it for the impala with a real fix.

While driving on day my speedometer went nuts at a dead stop I was doing 35 mph. this happened for a couple days then went away on its own. A couple weeks later the gas gauge did the same thing, also went away on its own.

I have a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. I've been having problems with my speedometer. I took it to the dealership prior because for some reason the ignition switch would not start the car. That cost me about $800.00. The car now needs a new Cluster. And they charge $472.00 for that. I called GM itself and they were not helpful, when asked for the name of the GM chairman, I could not even get an answer. Is name so sacred. It sits in park with no keys in the ignition, it shows 80 MPH. While driving, it reaches up to 110 MPH, when you do 30 MPH. That is crazy, not to mention unsafe. There is no recall at all. I read that you could reset it, but I don�t even think the dealer checked that. They come to me a say there is a problem with the cluster, I already know that, I brought it in to get fixed. The cost, and service is very lack luster. This will be the GM car I ever own.

this is the first GM vehicle I have owned where I have had to replace costly necessary interior components. Not happy with GM. I was always a GM fan, but not any more. Especially when you see that the Impala is about the best they can do now. I have heard 2008 is the year that will determine if GM survives long term. Unless GM makes some drastic changes to their foreign made, cheap quality, components, they will sink like a stone.
Vehicle styling, comfort etc., is very satisfactory. Its too bad they can't make a vehicle that would last without emptying your bank account. But maybe due to the agenda of the corporate financed New World Order, that is the plan.

One of the national news programs covered this speedometer problem with the Chevy trucks but I haven't heard anything about the Impala.

The speedometer jumped around for several days and then just simply stopped working. From doing some research on the internet, it is evident that this is a very prevalent problem. Chevy issued a recall on trucks and SUVs for this same issue earlier this year, but has not done so for the Impala. The more the complaints Chevy receives, the more likely it is it will extend the recalls to this model and reimburse us for our related expenses.

This could be a deadly problem. You never know how fast your were going. My tachometer, gas gauge and lights sensor also went out at the same time. I had to replace the whole cluster in which they messed the a/c vent up and you could tell that the dash had been messed with.

The first thing that went out on my car was the temperature gauge and I could reset it back to the original place by repeatedly turning my ignition back and forth until it got back in place. The next thing to go out was my speedometer. It was on 80mph and I knew I was going about 35-45 mph and then eventually it has went past the numbers and doesn't even move.I can still reset it to zero by turning the ignition back and forth but it's still messed up. Lastly, my gas gauge which about 3 weeks ago just went out and it automatically reset and now it's messed up again.

Have been using tach as a reference.when asked how fast I drive, comment "faster than some, slower then most". that must be the Minnesota / Iowa / Kansas / Missouri and Kansas speed limit.� Have not been stopped yet. However, the early morning start is a little in question, as the car is not completely warmed and I cannot depend on tach as transmission has nt yet shifted to all settings.

�A possible fix. With the truck not running, put it in reverse and turn the key repeatedly to the start position (the truck will not start because it is in gear) until the speedo resets to zero mph. I stumbled on this while working on my transmission cable, my entire cluster has worked since I did it. About a week now, which it hasn�t done in two years.�

Had a problem with the Temp. Gauge first, then it moved on to the speedometer and now it's my high beams that are going crazy...And i have had a moaning problem in my front end, not sure what that is all about either...Starting to get worried that everything else is going to fall apart on this piece of junk car...

I previously posted this problem on this site before having it fixed (#15 at this time). After doing some research I found mrwhizard.com had the best price and offered lots of information about the problem. Following the instructions provided, I removed the instrument cluster and sent it to him (free shipping both ways). A couple of weeks later it was returned with five new motors in it. I reinstalled it and it has been working fine ever since. I have also submitted a complaint to NHSTA and would recommend anyone else having this problem do the same. Mrwhizard said that if there is a safety recall the costs to repair may be reimbursed. Even if not, this problem is serious enough that Chevrolet should be forced to do something, since they aren't doing it voluntarily.

I think General Motors need to do a recall and get this problem fixed. This is my first Imapala and is probably going to be my last. I can't believe they don't do a recall and take care of this problem, it certainly looks there have been a ton of complaints and problems with this. I have also had to replace a wheel bearing on one of my tires and have had more problems that with any other car I have ever owned. I had to go and get a new bulb for one of my blinkers, I understand they burn out but have not had to replace one on any other cars I have had.

Speedometer started giving erratic readings. My favorite mechanic was not interested in working on it, but said if he did he would have to remove the instrument panel and send to some place that would fix it. I can do that myself, so I found a place on line that repairs instrument clusters. I will be sending it to them soon. They charge $169 with free shipping both ways. I have heard that the Chevy people want over $400. No thanks. This should be a safety recall, as suggested by other writers here.

I too have a problem with the speedo. It started intermittently several months ago, and now sits wherever it likes when stopped. It usually goes to 120+ when driving at approx. 45 MPH. I can't be sure however, my F*&%ing speedometer doesn't work.

Ok so ya, everyone that I have talked to has had a problem with the all the gauges, the only one that actually works (for now) is the gas gauge. I'm tired of getting tickets because guess what - it's like over 500 to fix it and being a single mom not making very much as it is, I do not have that kind of money just laying around. When I turned 16 this is the car I wanted. Its black windows tinted looks like a cop car which is what I am going to school for. But I think it is time that they have a recall on it. Its not our fault it is malfunctioning!!! Mine was fine - I bought it in the summer, no problems with it what so ever - come winter, one by one my gauges went out. Its a great danger to other drivers!!!!!! chevy needs to get on it
