Impala

  • 75,000 miles
My 2004 Impala's speedometer will go up over 100+ when I am only doing 60mph max. The temp gauge located to the right of the speedo is now doing the same thing. The only short term fix is to the ignition switch off then on again until the gauge reads zero again. On E time on my way home (pa.) from )NJ.) the gauge dropped past the max on the speedo and I had no clue on how fast I was going. For over 5 hours I had to go with the flow of traffic and hope that they were not speeding.

2004 Chevy Impala 1 owner purchase price $30,000 less than 50000 miles speedometer went out. Not covered under warranty per dealership. I never know how fast I am going but rely on the tac gauge. GM needs to recall the 2004 for this problem before someone dies.

2004 Chevrolet Impala. Speedometer and gauges do not work. Started working off and on then total failure. I see online this is a very common problem with Chevrolet Impala and is very dangerous. Also leaves a good chance of something happening to the motor and we would not know there was a problem. Many people with this problem are calling for a recall.

The instrument cluster has went out on my 04 Impala ls. First the speed odometer quit working, then the rpms quit and now the temperature gauge works about half the time.what's next the gas gauge? this is a major safety concern not having a properly working speed odometer. I have two small kids. This is the second complaint entered. There are several others with this same problem!! something needs to be done asap before someone gets killed!! no one seems to care about this matter. I can't afford to have this fixed. A recall needs to be issued. Since this is a factory malfunction!!!! do something please!!

First time car was taken out today, the speedometer read 75mph while stopped at a stop light. Scary for me particularly because it was the first time my daughter took the car out on her own (1pm). She only went to the grocery store maybe 5 miles from the house. When she returned, I took out the car. Everytime I slowed or stopped & started, the beginning speed would increase. For example, I'd be stopped and it would register that I was at 80+mph. At one point on the highway, the speedometer needle pointed at the "N". later this evening (8pm) we took the car out again. It showed 60 mph when we first entered the car. Then it decreased, showing 40mph while stopped. Quite dangerous situation. This needs to be taken care of via GM; a recall.

The speedometer on my 2004 Chevy Impala went haywire while I was on a highway. It started to shoot way up, telling me I was traveling 100 mph, then would drop down and it appeared I was going very slow. This went on for a couple days and then froze about 23 mph. This could create an unsafe condition because you never know how fast you are really traveling. My son's 2004 Chevy pick up had the same problem, almost identical mileage and GM fixed it no charge. When I inquired about that, they said, "it's a different problem". my cost to repair was $545; the whole instrument cluster had to be replaced. Looking on carcomplaints.com, there are 106 complaints (last time I checked) for the same issue, yet GM refuses to acknowledge there's a problem with the 2004 Chevy Impala.

2004 Impala speedometer not functioning. With varying speed limits throughout the city I feel that this is a safety problem and prevents a driver from being in compliance with the law. Wife drives a lot on her job and would not like for her to be driving too fast for road conditions. One cannot rely on other drivers to dictate ones speed. Seems to be an ongoing problem with this make and model. Information tells me that the '04 trucks with this problem were fixed by GM company and the cars are having the same problem but are not being repaired by GM. The ratio of complaints to this problem compared to the other problems with this make and model tell me that GM should address the problem before there are serious consequences involving the inability of a driver of a 2004 Impala to determine their speed and possibly resulting in a serious accident.

Driving down the road and noticed my speedometer quit working. Will reset itself after car has been turned off and sat for at least 30 minutes. This was happening occasionally, but now it is a daily thing; almost every time I get in the car. Sometimes the speedometer will quit after being in stop and go traffic or after hitting a hard bump and then the speedometer will get stuck on one figure. Sometimes it is stuck on zero or 25 mph. I have taken it to be repaired but it won't act up for the service guy. It is a hazard when driving because not knowing what speed I am going can cause an accident. When researching for a recall, I have seen hundreds of people with the same problem.

Regular use of vehicle, speedometer gets stuck in place and doesn't read speed and temperature gauge is stuck as well in the same cluster. Dealer informed me that there no recall on part even though I have spoke with others with the same vehicle having the same problem. My car is a 2004 Impala under 70,000 miles. I use my gps to track my speed, because I feel it's not right for me to pay up to $460 for a part that I did not break or damage because of normal use.

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that the gauges on the instrument panel were inoperative and displayed inaccurate readings. As a consequence, she cannot determine how fast she is traveling, which is hazardous. The contact is in the process of taking the vehicle to the dealer to identify the cause of the failure. The failure mileage was 55,000 and current mileage was 58,500. Updated 3/16/09 updated 03/19/09.

My speedometer would somedays go to 60-120 upon starting the car somedays operated fine. Called GMC dealer where I purchased car took it in and he said it definitely was the speedometer cluster said definitely not a short but would not put that in writing until they replace the cluster with a redesigned one and that would be 450.00est. The service manager assured me it was safe to drive I just would not know how fast I was going very funny. He also admitted to me that some of the truck&SUV's were on recall but not my 2004 Impala yet. Since then I have been reading many other complaints re: This cluster problem since 2003 why should I pay for a part that should be a recall on all GMC cars and trucks. It appears there is also a legal suit pending regarding this part.

Impala 4WD 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 24,000 miles
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that the speedometer would not record the proper speed. The speedometer displayed at least 30 miles below the traveled speed, or it would read over 100 mph when the contact was really traveling less than 50 mph. The manufacturer would not assume liability or assist with the repairs. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 24,000 and current mileage was 40,500. Updated 03-06-09 the consumer stated the speedometer initially would fail occasionally or give false readings. Soon after, is stopped working all together. Updated 03/11/09.

On December 23rd while doing normal driving around town my speedometer stuck at 50mph. I was moments earlier going the speed limit of 35. At a complete stop it raised to 60 and remained stuck there. Through research online I have found that this is a common problem with 396000+ posts and complaints registered across the country. I found many possible temporary "fixes" and one did work until today. While again normal driving my speedometer dropped from 35mph to 0 and is now stuck there. This is a major safety hazard for drivers, myself and those around such vehicles. A recall should be demanded. My car is only 5 years old with no other problems up to this point. It has 70,000+ miles and has had regular servicing and no other gauge problem so far.
