2004 Chevy Impala instrument panel is not reading correctly. I have had several people with same year model car say the same happen to them.

The instrument cluster(speedometer, tach) of my 2004 Impala is malfunctioning. There have been many complaints about it on the internet from other consumers and they all have been told that there is no recall and you have to get it fixed yourself for 500-800.00 and its not just happening to a few people but a lot. Sometimes it will read that I'm doing 50 mph on the highway and I am easily passing everyone up so it is a safety problem.

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. While driving 65 mph with the cruise control activated, the speedometer dial dropped to 0 mph. The speedometer then began displaying inaccurate speeds. The vehicle was not diagnosed by the dealer. The current mileage was 52,203 and failure mileage was 30,000.

2004 Impala ls speedometer failure at 51,000 miles. It stuck at 50 mph and then increased to over 120 at about 30 mph. This seems to be an inherent widespread problem for this and other year model Impala's as well as other Chevrolet's as per the web site ( www.carcomplaints.com/Chevrolet/Impala/2004/accessories-interior/speedometer_gone_haywire.shtml ). this is a dangerous situation and Chevrolet will apparently not put a recall on it. Someone suggested to let this site know about this and apparently has already done so themselves, so I hope my statement is of some help for all these people's problems, including mine. Please put the pressure on GM to correct their mistake. I wouldn't have a clue about how many failures or number of injuries, deaths or possible speeding tickets for all the people involved in this. 2004 Chevrolet Impala. Instrument cluster gauge failure. All gauges have stopped functioning correctly. They either register incorrect information, (speed, fuel, engine temperature) or do not work at all. www.mycarstats.com/safetystation.asp lists over 100 accounts of this happening with this model car.

Speedometer failed after approx. 60,000 miles on my 2004 Chevrolet Impala ls. It is inaccurate and inconsistent, often reading 30-60 mph when I am stopped at a light and often reading over 90 mph when driving below 40 mph. At times, the needle jumps erratically and gets stuck outside the normal range, such as pointing to a gear indicator on the display rather than to a speed on the dial.

On multiple occasions, the speedometer on my 2004 Chevrolet Impala ls has gotten stuck. I would say that this has happened close to a dozen times now since I bought this car in November of 2007. I have read numerous statements from online forums about people having the same problems, and I have talked to three different dealerships that have reported this as being a common problem. I am wondering why this has not been a cause for a recall, as a speedometer seems like a pretty important piece of vehicle equipment. Its especially frustrating since it will cost me $400 to have it repaired. I was also told by the dealerships that once the speedometer goes, eventually the rest of the cluster will start to fail. 2004 Impala police package. Instrument panel failure. After 15-20 minutes driving, the speedometer drop back to about 15 at highway speed. With several stop it stay below 0 and never move again. GM should replace all defected instrument panel for Impala like they do to other models as soon as possible.

2004 Chevrolet Impala's transmission starts slipping. It moves very slowly in the mornings. It moves very slowly from 1st to 2nd gear. It will not pull hills at a slow speed but on the interstate at 50-55mph it will only slow down just a little. It basically will not go over 65 miles per hour. I have to stay in the slow lane. Plus, the digital instrument panel does not work so I can only assume I am going 50-55 miles per hour by judging the speed pattern of the other motorists. This means no temperature gauge, no speedometer, and no fuel gauge. I check fluid levels every week. I fill up my tank every Saturday and Wednesday. I am stuck and sick of this because I can not afford to get two things fixed that should only stop working on old cars. This car is 4 years old.

Our speedometer quit working properly approx 4/1/07. Contacted GM to see if there was a recall, there was not. Speedometer is just stuck and points to the gear indicator in the dash. Upon research, many GM '04 have this defect. My husband manages a retail food company and his fleet is supplied with GMC topkicks. The '04 trucks had the same problem. The company had to soak the cost of replacing all the "clusters" due to no recall. I think a defect which affects the safety of a dot certified driver should be recalled.

Opy of text sent to GM/Chevrolet... my speedometer and other instrument cluster gauges operate erratically. Speedometer specifically is totally erratic, almost never correct and varies anywhere from fully pegged at zero to fully pegged at top end. You never know what speed you are traveling at any time. You cannot gauge, by speedometer, the speed limit or recommended speeds for curves, etc. This is a very unsafe condition. From extensive reading so far, it is obvious that this is a defective part on this vehicle and due to the safety and legal nature of your speed, this gauge should be replaced via industry-wide recall. This gauge has been faulty for the past year. I have installed my gps to monitor my speed. The gauge is not symmetric in its errors. You will read 100+ sometimes going 70 or you will read 0 going same speed. It changes from trip to trip and sometimes after a stop at an intersection, or just driving constant speed.

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. While driving 90 mph, the speedometer gauge became stuck and remained at 90 mph, even while driving at lower speeds. The speedometer remains at 90 mph even while the vehicle is parked. In addition, the temperature gauge indicated that the vehicle was overheating when it actually was not. I seriously thought I was the only one having these problems. I bought a 2004 Chevrolet Impala in Aug 07. The problems started only a month after I bought the car. First the temp gauge would register all the way up to 260. After checking to make sure the car was not running hot, I started calling dealers to try to figure out what the problem was. I was informed by a several dealerships they have seen several problems with the instrument panel and they continued telling how much it would cost to replace it. Well only a couple weeks later the speedometer started the same thing. It would stick and not register right. The problem is still continuing cause I can't afford to fix it. I continued my regular maintenance on the car and during and oil change I was informed the transmission fluid needed to changed, so I made the appointment to have it changed on Saturday. Only a couple of hours after having it changed we went to back up and the transmission slipped. This had never happened before so we thought it just might be low on fluid. After checking the fluid level was fine but the problems continued. Now it slips when I put it in drive to take off and you can hear the transmission whining while being driven. As of now it still slips, sometimes, ands whines, and of course the instrument panel is still messed up because I cannot afford to have it fixed. I have spoken to several people that own Impala and I have come to find out they are having the same problems I am having. You would think by now that GM would realize there is a problem and they are not just isolated incidents.

Several occasions now the speedometer has gone haywire and is showing that I am traveling excessively faster than I am going - approximately 30 - 40+ mph. I thought that I was speeding and so I lightly put on my brakes to slow down during rush hour traffic and had tires squealing all around me - the speed of traffic is 70+ mph in that section of freeway. It was fortunate that it did not cause a several car pileup.

I was driving and noticed that my speedometer was sitting on zero. Months later I noticed that my gas gauge started going haywire. One minute it was full the next it was 1/2 full and I had only gone 20 miles down the road. Then my dad used my car one day and told me that the oil pressure gauge was wrong as well. I have not had the money to fix this problem and the only way I know I need gas is when the low fuel message comes up in the message center. I have received about 4 speeding tickets just in the last year and would have received more if I had not known the officer or told them the problem and begged that they let me off with a warning.

When instrument panel stops working the traction control is also stops working so does the speedometer and the anti- lock brakes making it unable to stop properly. I have been told by a GM mechanic that GM knows about this problem by\ut they intend to do nothing about it.

The speedometer on my 2004 Chevrolet Impala goes crazy. After it has been run for more than an hour it will stick on your highest speed, not drop back to zero and show a speed from 10 to 100 mile more than the actual speed. Very unsafe, when you do not know how fast you are going.
