My 2004 Chevy Impala speedometer went haywire
- Co.Bluffs, IA, USA
Speedometer on 2004 Chevy Impala suddenly changed to read 50mph when not even moving. Then when driving it reads much higher mph than actual speed. Was reset by turning ignition on and off several times. This has happened 2 times since then and can be reset but not while driving. This is a serious safety hazard because you have no idea how fast you are actually going when it happens to malfunction.

This am during morning traffic and my vehicle cut off. This happened several times leading to me having to get my car towed to a Chevy dealer. Come to find out my passlock sensor failed.

The event actually started the day that my wife and I bought the vehicle. We bought our vehicle used from sanger Ford in sanger, ca. First the temperature gauge went out. Later the speedometer stopped working and now our fuel gauge doesn't work. The mechanic at sanger Ford stated that it was the cluster and it was not covered under warranty and told us it would cost $507.45 to replace. We have since spoken to GM, who instructed us to get a diagnostic and they would take it from there. We paid $85 for a diagnostic at tom benson Chevrolet in san antonio, tx. GM then told us that there is no recall for the cluster on the Impala, but there are recalls on the Chevy Tahoe, Suburban and the Silverado and that if we wanted it replaced we could deduct the cost of the diagnostic from what tom benson wanted to charge to replace it, which was $500. I have seen comments online from other '04 Impala owners complaining about their cluster going out, they just either paid to have it replaced and the ones who didn't have the money to replace it, like myself, are stuck with not knowing how fast they are driving, how much gas they have or if their engine is running hot. Please help us. I know that this is a major problem and GM doesn't want to have to pay to fix it.

Pass lock system fails. Car will not start. Have to wait 10 min. To try it again. Heard of others with same complaint. If so many complaints, why has there not been a recall. Have read that even getting it fixed will not always solve the problem. Very expensive to.

Bought a 2004 from russ darrow group in madison wi. This car was a rental car we paid 19K for it and it has 30K miles on it. It shakes when driving over 50mph and the brakes are unreliable. The salesman cooericed us into this car, and we tried to rectify the matter within 48 hours, but they won't cooperate. There are 2004 cars with 0 miles for less money, that have not been in any accidents. The front end is out of allignment and it is unsafe to drive. It is a 2004 Chevy Impala. We want a different, safe car, we do not want this fixed. The payments are almost 500 per month for six years. There are three different mileage amounts on the papers and on the contract the odometer says 0 striken out. Please help. Thank you.

I bought a car for 18995. On a day later the dealer put on the news paper the same car stock # for 12995. Im trying to fix this matter with the dealer but their say is just to attract people.

Driver says "every time they get in and out of the car they get shocked." Owner has tried scotch guard and fabric softener and nothing helps. Owner later took vehicle to the dealer and was told that the vehicle shows no sign of defects and there is nothing they can do. Please provide any additional information.
