I have a 2005 Chevy Impala ls 3.8 liter, the speedometer quit working all of a sudden. I can not safely judge the speed I am traveling. Upon my research I have found that there have been several other consumers who have had this same issue on this model of car. The estimated repair would range from $400-$600. A rather expensive repair that I feel could possibly be a recall issue.

With 92,000 miles on my 2005 Impala the tachometer is working strangely, and now frozen at 6,100 rpms. I fear the entire gauge package will fail. The speedometer is starting to seem impacted now too. But now gauges" help!! thank you.

Speedometer not working, sometimes it will read 80mph stopped & not running. Or you could be going 50 & actual Y going 80 & get a ticket, this has happen to us 5 or 6 times within the last 2 weeks, I have read a lot of other people with the same problem. My car has less than 85, 000 miles. Do we not make quality cars & trucks in the good old U.S.a. "?? maybe I should have bought a Kia with 100, 0000 miles warranty bumper to bumper " thank-U for U time.

Impala 6-cyl

  • 86,000 miles
I have a 2005 Chevy Impala, the speedometer does not work. At about 80,000 miles it would say I was going 80 or 120 mph when it was actually about 60mph. Now it doesn't work at all. I have no idea how fast or slow I am going. This is a safety concern for me being disabled, and I can't afford to get rid of the car right now. This should be a re-call.

2005 chevorlet Impala: The speedometer gains/drops speed at any given time without warning causing miscalculation of speed during travel. At first, the speedometer returned to the original state, however, after resetting the cruise control function, the unit failed to register speed properly. It has affected the maintenance and performance of the vehicle. Ultimately, the RPM and speedometer gauges, cease to work properly and the car tends to skip between automatic gear shifts. Also, I received a traffic ticket in the state of nc due to the speedometer malfunction. In order to fix this problem for my vehicle, 2005 chevorlet Impala (mileage: 103,117K), the instrument cluster has to be uninstalled from the vehicle, rebuilt, and reinstalled back into the vehicle according to my dealer and a licensed mechanic. This repair on average ranges $400-$800 (www.carcomplaints.com). according to research, speedometer failure is a common but expensive problem among 2000-2006 chevorlet models.

Impala

  • 89,000 miles
2005 Chevrolet Impala speedometer not working properly. It reads much faster than you are actually going, often times 40mph +. the problem started on a long trip. Cycling the ignition would bring it back to zero, but that no longer works. There is not one single event that triggers the problem. It cause the driver to maintain speed either way too slow for traffic or way too fast. Creating unsafe conditions. Parts are available, but the parts and labor will cost a minimum of $460. Buying a used part is not a viable option since the instrument cluster is coded to the car. A simple google search produces many thousands of complaints about this problem, yet GM will not run a recall on this. They recalled the Silverado with the same problem.

Impala

  • 67,000 miles
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated the speedometer was exhibiting failures by inaccurately reading the speed of which the vehicle traveled. In order to maintain an accurate speed, he would have to utilize the cruise control mechanism. The dealer advised the contact that the entire instrument cluster would need to be replaced. The contact was concerned that only the stepper motor would need replacement as opposed to the entire instrument cluster. He was also concerned with being unable to determine the rate of speed in which he was traveling. The failure mileage was 67,000 and the current mileage was unknown.

Impala

  • 72,000 miles
2005 Chevrolet Impala. Speedometer works only intermittently. Sticks at zero when it isn't working. At times, when functioning, though I increase speed or decrease, needle doesn't move in timely manner thus not accurately reporting current speed; needle lags way behind changes in speed. This is dangerous as I can not determine how fast I am going, especially in areas such as school zones where others are anticipating a certain speed and I am sometimes exceeding it unknowingly leading to some close calls with me almost hitting people who pull out in front of me; if I were able to determine my speed accurately and travel at that speed there would not be these close calls. Not covered by warranty due to intermittent problem not complete failure and as warranty is almost expired and will be too cost prohibitive (in excess of $800 and several weeks without a vehicle) to get it fixed after warranty ends so I will have no option but to dangerously and knowingly drive a car not able to determine my speed due to GM's failure to fix this problem that they are more than aware of as they have received multiple complaints. To me, this is a huge safety issue for myself and others I encounter on the roadway and I feel it is Chevrolet responsibility to fix this problem for all of us as they used motors in the instrument cluster that are prone to failure!
