My transmission began slipping while I was on a road trip to go pick up my kids. I was 6 hours away from home, with 3 and a half more to go. I felt a jerk a couple times while I was driving, like it didn't want to change gears. When I approached a red light in Atlanta, the car would not move when it turned green. I tried everything possible to move forward, and even backwards. I called the dealership and even GMAC, only to hear that my warranty was up by 1000 miles, causing me to have to purchase a transmission. After getting that fixed, I am starting to have the same problem again 2 years later. I have always been a chevy girl. My father has been buying them for me since I was in high school, and that is the only type of vehicles that we have. After this impala has given me so much trouble and cost me so much money, I will never buy another Chevy again. We have 4 Chevy vehicles and they are all giving us problems. The one that seems to hold up the best is our 96 silverado. Both the 06 impala and the 05 trailblazer have had transmissions replaced, as well as power steering pumps and sensors. Aside from that, the tire and wheel sensors in my car have not worked in 2 years and I refuse to pay $100 for the dealership to just look at it.

I'm not angry (yet.) I am really very disappointed. You haven't any idea how disappointed I am. Against the grain, after owning two Acuras, two Toyotas and two Hondas, I bought a gently used '06 Impala from my very careful cousin - he loved this car, babied it, treated it like his own child... then when the lease was up, sold it to us. We resisted because it was a Chevy. But I liked the car. I liked the ride - loved the ride. And there I was broken down on a back road for the first time ever. In 20+ years of owning a car, I've never had a bad transmission - never. And our cars hold up because we baby them too. My first Acura Legend went 177k - and we sold it. Our Honda Odyssey has 128k on it and we just drove it to Fla and back. Heck our Chrysler minivan was at 128k before we sold it. My Toyota went 146k and we sold it. My second Legend is 17 years old and has 117k on it and that's how I'm getting to work tomorrow morning.

Not doing this again GM. Not. Gonna. Happen. Despite my love for the Impala, I cannot, we cannot afford to do this trick again.

a transmission slipping and failing at such low mileage is apparently occurring frequently with the 06 impala ss. My extended warranty ran out at 60,000. there are service bulletins. GM is aware that this is a problem. If they want to keep GM loyalty, I feel that there should be some financial help with this unforeseen expense.

Update from Aug 18, 2010: I've replaced the transmission on my v8 @ aprox 70,00 miles. the problem did not go away. I've had it in to the dealer twice. the problem of hard shifting from a stop, (either reverse or forward ) still exists. I don't have an engine light on yet. It's random. It doesn't happen as frequently a it did prior to the transmission replacement ( of aprox $3000.00). I actually love this car. Bought it new and just made the last payment. I would be grateful if GM could isolate and repair the problem. I am looking forward to a couple of years of no car payments while I am deciding on what my next car will be. I will watch to see if owners of newer impalas have a similar problem. C'mon GM... fix this problem .. Please!

It hurt so bad and was so embarrassing because the car is otherwise a delightful, lethal, and feared presense on the road and in parking lots.But last year at the 50,000 mile mark it slipped for a week before utterly QUITTING right after work, ( 95miles from home-we commute thanks! Now on October 22nd, last, at the 99,000+ mark- it started slipping and bumping again.........off to the Dealership again! Now I'm spooked at every little noise that I here ( ALMOST SCARED TO DRIVE THE THING ) ...not the way to own a BUTT-kicker like this car is.

I had parked my impala out on the driveway after coming home from work the next morning i woke up to go to the store started driving down the block and heard a loud whining noise. So i went back home and checked out the car i thought at first it was something to do with the air box or filter cause it sounded to me at first like a rush of air. I couldnt find anything wrong so i decided to go to the dealership. The dealership i took it to first was very rude so i left to go to another one but i the transmisson went out about 15 miles from the dealership. I figured out if u put the car in nuetral while moving and turn off the engine and restart it and put it in drive you can get the trans to grip again not sayin it will definetly work for u but it did for me. They had to totally replace my trans they said they gave me a new one but im sure it was a rebuilt i only had 53000 miles on the car and i have read about a lot of impalas having problems with their transmissions

Bought the 2006 Chevy Impala LT in Sept 2007 with about 32,000 miles on it. The transmission went completely out 2 weeks ago with little warning. It was NOT under ANY warranty, which was at 36,000 miles. I was very angry and upset to say the least. I found out while it was in the shop that it was a HERTZ rental car before I got it, and I did not know when I purchased it, only that it was a trade in. The Chevy place told me that he called the manufacture about it and they would not help at all. Of course not, they want the GOVERNMENT to BAIL them out, so why would they help anyone? I had to get a loan to pay for the repairs, then I traded it in the same day I got it out of the shop. I have NEVER had that happen to me at that kind a mileage or at all for that fact. I understand it had no warranty, BUT for a car that new and low miles, that should NEVER HAPPEN. OK. that's off my chest now. Even though I have a bank note that fixed the problem, I could not afford to WONDER when the next shoe was to drop. OH by the way, THEY COULD NOT TELL ME WHAT CAUSED IT...I would have had to pay MORE MONEY to find out!!! How sorry is that? SO the new transmission may go out too being that there may be an underlying issue??? I don't know anything about cars, but I do know that that was way wrong!!!! They get these cars at auctions that were driven by hundreds of people renting them or whatever..

About two weeks ago my car started hesitating between third and fourth gear. It's been getting worse over the couple of weeks so Friday I called around and found a dealer to take a look as I had just barely over 500 miles left on my warranty. Sure enough they called me back to say my clutch was failing and there were metal grounds in my transmission pan so they are going to have to replace it. I'm super glad I took it in when I did, I can't imagine if I had gone another week and been out of warranty.
