The car is making a definite thunk when turning the steering wheel. Sounds like a gentle banging in the steering column, but seems to work fine. It is annoying, and I wondered if I need to have it fixed (especially since it's off warranty).

Ridiculous that after only 12500 miles the steering would clunk. Finally brought it to dealer and they replaced the steering shaft. Driving home from dealer steering felt great. Will update if it happens again.

I gradually developed the problem of the steering popping in my 2007 Malibu when turning or stopping. The power suddenly drained from my battery and the car would not start. I had to get jumped to go anywhere. I was finally able to take the car in for service, with the complaint the something was draining the power from my battery. The mechanic at o'reilly chevrolet in tucson drove it and determined that it was the steering column, and replaced it. The problem has gone away, and the steering is much tighter than it;'s ever been. I'm guessing the electrical steering malfunctioning caused the power drain.
My other problem is with the brakes. They screech when applied. I was told by a mechanic that nothing can be done unless I buy more expensive break pads made of different material. Otherwise, the car drives fine, and the gas milage is very good after two years of ownership..

I BOUGHT MY 2007 CHEVY MALIBU LS IN OCT 2007 WITH 26,000 MILES IT WAS GREAT AT FIRST. I HAD A LEMON IN THE PAST SO A NEWER CAR WAS SUCH A RELIEVE TO HAVE.BUT IN DECEMBER OF 2007 WHEN IT WAS SUPER COLD OUT SIDE I WAS DRIVING TO WORK I DIDN'T EVEN GET OFF MY STREET AND HEARD THIS CLUNKING NOISE SOUNDED LIKE A FLAT TIRE IN THE FRONT GOT OUT LOOKED NOTHING.TOOK TO DEALER ONLY TO GET A RESPONSE THEY DIDNT HEAR IT{HOW ANNOYING}LIKE IM LYING.NE WAYS I DO BELIEVE THEY JUST TOLD ME TO CHECK TIRE PRESSURE BECAUSE WHEN ITS COLD IT COULD JUST BE THAT.WELL NEXT COLD MORNING HERE IS THE NOISE SO I TOOK IT BACK I TOLD THEM DRIVE IT WHEN ITS FREEZING U WILL HEAR IT SO THE DID AND REPLACED SOMETHING ON THE FRONT END. NO MORE NOISE FOR A WHILE. SKIP TO JUNE 2008 STARTED HEARING A "POPPING NOISE" WHEN I TURNED NO WARRANTY NOT GOING TO DEALER SO I WENT TO A SMALL SHOP AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS COMING FROM THAT ELECTRICAL BOX THE STEERING ROD GOES IN HE WAS NICE LUBBED IT FOR FREE HE TOLD ME THIS IS A COMMON COMPLAINT WITH THIS CAR AND A PONTIAC MODEL HINT HINT GM.SO HE SAID THERE IS ALSO A SPECIAL LUBE GM MAKES AS WELL BUT NE WAYZ HE FIXED IT FOR A WHILE.HERE COMES FALL {5 MONTHS LATER} AND THE NOISE IS BACK TOOK IT BACK TO SMALL SHOP THEY LUBED IT AGAIN ONLY FOR NOISE NOT TO GO AWAY.HE WAS NICE ENOUGH TO TELL ME THAT THE DEALER MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO FIX IT SO HERE I AM IN ALMOST WINTER WEATHER WITH A CAR THE CLUNKS WHEN ITS COLD AND POPS WHEN I TURN.THIS IS SOOOOOOOOO ANNOYING BUT I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO GO TO DEALER EVERYTIME THIS HAPPENS.WHEN U GET A NEWER CAR U EXPECT A RELIABLE VEHICLE I DUNNO WHAT TO DO?HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM ON THIS MODEL?OPEN TO RESPONSES KIMBRAWLEY@ATT.NET

I am about to spit BULLETS. First of all, the dealer, Steve Peters Chevy in Homewood, gave me the WORST nightmare of my life with the car. They refused to give me the remote lock fob, so I must manually lock/unlock. And they are totally RUDE the second you walk off the lot. Then, my warranty was up at 36,000 miles. I'm at 40,000 miles, and now the steering clunks, and there is a whizzing noise as you accelerate. Took it to another shop, since that dealer can no longer get a red cent of mine, and it's $600 to fix the drive shaft and tire bearings. NEVER will I buy another GM. I'm sticking with Ford.

My Malibu has made this popping sound since day one. I have 47K highway miles over the last twelve months and I am told that I am going to have to replace the entire Rack and pinion assembly. Who ever heard of steering going out in a car in 12 months of highway driving? I will tell you who. Chevy owners. This problem has been going on for years and they try to deny it.
I see that Ford Focus just made the Initial Quality list.
It will be a cold day in hell when I purchase another Chevy Product. In fact, I just might put a warning on the back window and leave it there the next 47K miles. I only pass a few thousand cars a day.

Bought this sport red Malibu LT 3500 in January and the car drove and felt great. After just one month of ownership the dreaded steering problems started occurring. There is a popping/clanking noise that you can feel right in the steering when you hit bumps at low speeds and it also makes a noise when turning left. This has really soured my taste for this car. Now it is April and the noise still exists even at 60 degree plus temps outside so I don't think problem is going to ever go away. Have brought the car into two different dealers and they replaced the strut bearings and claim to not hear the noise. I am now taking the car in to a third larger dealer to try and get this resolved before the warranty runs out but I am not very confident that it will ever be fixed. The scary part is that the all new 2008 Malibu still uses this faulty electric power steering on the LS and LT 4 cylinder models so those may be affected too. Will probably trade it in next year on a Sonota.

OK whats wrong with all you people out there that have problems with your Malibus You are complaining to the DEALER and getting no results (still mad) Well go above the dealer and -phone GM direct (1-800-263-3777) the more calls they get then maybe some-thing will be done about our cars. Clunking in steering GM says that is normal in winter due to grease shrinking in steering parts . this leaves slack between parts (not a safety issue according to GM) Well what if my idler arm is falling off or a ball joint coming apart i cant tell for all the racket that is coming from the front end. This is a GM admitted fault with this car and i am left holding the bag. So common folks complain get results before somebody or bystander gets KILLED GEORGE jboland1@shaw.ca welcome all replys

I complained on this site before about my 2007 Malibu steering clunking started app 1000 to1500km on it when i took it back to dealer ship (orian) they put more new parts in the car and the result is even more clunking from front end, Now i leased this car and i feel that since i have had this problem from app 600miles on car that it should be replaced or (fixed) i have asked that my 3500 deposit be returned and taxes and extra warranty i bought be transfered to a 2008 model (looking at a equinox) its more money but what can i do All the enjoyment has been taken out of the new car with this problem. i would love to here from other people out there who are having the same problem and maybe we can all get together and fight GM so remember if you own a 2006-2007 Malibu turn off your radio drive slow down some back alley and listen you will encounter noise and clunking from left front end. Mechanics say noise cannot be fixed and Gm is not doing anything about it so lets all drive a new car that sounds like it has 10000000 km on it verry annoyed George Boland (204)8977753 jboland1@shaw.ca Please respond

As i have complained about this car before this is 3rd complaint When i bought this car a 2007 Chev Malibu LT 2.2 4cyl i had done some research on this model and had found out that this car had some problems with front end parts in the steering department. Ok i said to myself all cars have some problems so off to service dept i go and asked if the steering problems have been cleared up in the 2007 model . YES i was told by the service adviser the steering shaft has been replaced in that model and the problem has been fixed. Even the sales-man said no problems with this car . So i leased it Now after many new front end parts i am told sorry no fix on this car that we know of. Well Mr Gm if no fix and this all started at1000km How about returning me my 3500 dollars deposit + taxes+ extra money on warranty and i will gladly give you back your Malibu .OR OR take all that money and let me put it down on another GM car jboland1@shaw.ca

Ok any body thinking of buying a new GM car beware of electronic steering this system has no power steering fluid . only grease between parts so when it gets cold outside everything shrinks and you are left with a car that clunks and sounds like something is banging on the floor under your feet, as the weather warms up this noise goes away all by its self only to return the next time its gets cold. my car 2007 Malibu has had just about all the front end parts changed and i now am testing it again. but most mechanics i have talked to say the noise will come back as soon as i have 1000 to2000 km on it so i will be going back for another new front end every winter as long as i own this car i should have bought a Camry. yours tears

Last year I think in October my car making noise and shaking a little. I planned to have it check but before I have it check I got an accidence. I was driving straight on freeway on a rainy day with cars in front, cars behind me then some thing happened so quick my car spinning two three times and hitting the barricate on 205 freeway bridge. The repair shop said I had a hydroplane. It maybe my mistake that I was going a little fast on a rainy day but between 60 - 65 mph it is still normal for most cars. I think there was a problem with the steering system that may lead to my accident.
After my car was fixed the front wheel noise was louder and the back wheels slide when I made quick turns. I brought it back to the repair shop 4 times, tire shops two times, replace all four new tires even they were still good tires, brought to Les Schwab to check shocks and suspension. Finally the insurance company paid to replace the steering rack "I think" for about $750. Now the front wheel noise is still there, I can hear it, the colder the louder it is.
I hope GM or some one take a good look at the steering problems of these cars and make sure they are still safe to drive. Thanks
