I am burning oil at an approximate rate of 1 quart per 300 miles. One mechanic suggested it may cost $3,000 to fix. I plan on getting a second or third opinion from other mechanics.

i am tring to figure out why my car eats up so much engine oil. one time the engine light didnt even turn on and when i checked the dipstick there was no oil in it. i checked it because the car was making a horrible ticking sound. why? if i always changed the oil every three thousand miles. what could be the problem?
