Inbetween every oil change I have to add a quart of oil. The car has no leaks and no smoke out of the tail pipe.

i am tring to figure out why my car eats up so much engine oil. one time the engine light didnt even turn on and when i checked the dipstick there was no oil in it. i checked it because the car was making a horrible ticking sound. why? if i always changed the oil every three thousand miles. what could be the problem?
