In may of 2005 while approaching a stop light at slow speed, on dry pavement, the ABS brakes, in my 2002 Chevrolet Silverado, activated causing the vehicle to require a greater than normal stopping distance. No accident occurred. The incident seemed isolated. Then in June, the problem continued and became more and more frequent. When pulling into a parking space at a slow speed I was just barely able to come to a stop within the confines of the parking space. Although no particular accident has occurred I strongly feel that this is a very unsafe and potentially dangerous problem. The vehicle has only 19,000 miles on it. The vehicle was brought to hadad Chevrolet in pittsfield, MA where we were told it would cost between $270 and $920 to fix. We have called Chevrolet to see if the manufacturer is responsible for fixing the problem but they had not even heard of the problem. The problem has not yet been corrected as we are investigated the manufacturer's responsibility and the most economical repair for our problem.

When he took vehicle to service dealer he was told that all of the rotors were rusted. He did not notice any problems prior to this because he did not drive this truck very much. A 2002 Chevrolet Silverado with only 14,000 miles on it. Has been on the internet and saw where he saw similar complaints about brakes failing.

The dealer could not get the rotor off on the back and the consumer did not know what was wrong with it. The dealership broke the ABS sensor. The consumer took the truck back to the dealership and they replaced the sensor. The owner of the truck has never contacted GM. The vehicle is regularly maintained and serviced. The consumer has expericined brake problems for 3 years.

The consume states that the parking brake is not holding on 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. This has been an issue for about a month. The owner has taken the truck to the dealership, and they classified it as a normal wear item. They dealer is not going to replace this for free. There is a recall on the manual transmissions but not the automatic. But the owner says that they share the same parking brake system. The owner has contacted the manufacturer, and they were aware of the problem, , and stated that there was no recall. NHTSA recall 05V161000. On manual transmission. The owner was going to have this fixed, but it will be at his expense. There were no prior problems with the truck. There is about 60% of the brake lining left on the back brakes. The owner is pushing the brake to the floor and it is not working.

When applying the brakes, the pedal kicks up and the vehicle is difficult to stop. The stopping distance has at least doubled. I found that the anti-lock brake speed sensor quit working with 37000 miles on the truck. I unplugged the sensor and the brakes are working fine (without anti lock brakes).

Prior to the crash I'll describe, I noticed that the antilock brakes on my truck would engage randomly at low speeds, even though the road was clear and dry. I never received any indication from indicator lights or the truck's status display that there was a malfunction in progress. Until the incident below, braking control always returned within a few seconds and seemed to pose no safety threat. On this particular evening, they had performed without incident all the way home from work. I pulled into my driveway and into my garage. Upon entering the garage proper, the antilock brakes engaged. The garage floors (and driveway) were both clear of any snow, ice, or liquids. When the antilock brakes took control, it released the brakes and locked the brake pedal in such a way that I could not regain control. This time, I was unable to push the pedal down. My vehicle subsequently stuck the workbench along the back wall of my garage. The impact pushed the entire garage wall out almost 12 inches, including the cement block foundation. Fortunately, there was no damage to the vehicle. However, the damage to the garage remains. To correct the failure, a mechanic at a local dealership removed the fuse that controls the antilock brake functions, essentially disabling the antilock system. Due to the nature and location of the antilock sensors (in the wheel bearings), repairs are not financially feasible at this time. The truck's brakes function normally with the antilock system disabled. I believe that this complaint directly relates to NHTSA action number PE05020.

Per NHTSA action number PE05-020, I have experienced on more than one occaision the failures described in the aforementioned bulletin. Failures occurred subsequent to dealership's performing the following work under warranty: Replacement of failed front end bearings, seals, pinions and related components. Dealership's position has been one of denial and dismissal of the complaint. Chevrolet only offers reimbursement for repairs if this becomes a recall issue. Because this is a braking issue and a safety issue not only for my family and self, but other motorists, it obviates justification of recall status.

2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the vehicle brakes and rotors are excessively worn out and corroded to the point of failure, the emergency brake will not stop or hold the vehicle in place, and the consumer has only put 12,000 miles on the vehicle, consumer has contacted the manufacturer. They told consumer that there was no recall on this issue, the manufacturer gave the consumer a service request order # 1-346253-537. There were no other safety issues with the vehicle at this time.

2002 Chevrolet Silverado Z71. The anti lock brakes are not working correctly, when the consumer pushed on the brake pedal the vehicle continues to move, the consumer almost hit another vehicle. The consumer had to put the vehicle into park to stop it. The consumer took the vehicle to a garage, and the mechanic ran a diagnostic test on the vehicle, the test came out negative. The brakes failed without warning. The ABS light comes on when the vehicle starts up, but it fails to come on when the ABS brakes fail. This is the only problem with the vehicle. This problem has occurred multiple times. The vehicle is no longer under warranty.

On June 17, 2005, I felt the brake pedal of my 2002 Chevrolet Silverado truck [xxx] pulsate when I came to a stop at the bottom of the exit ramp from I-75. This lasted for a couple of seconds, and the truck took a couple of extra feet to stop. I had a similar problem on my 1998 Chevy lumina several months ago and the ABS warning light came on. That problem cost over $ 500 to repair. The lumina had 49K miles, but the truck only has 18.5K miles. The only thing in common with these two vehicles is that I switch off on driving them, sometimes letting one or the other stay parked for a week or two, depending on what kind of work I am doing. This time, with the Silverado, no ABS or brake warning lights ever came on, so I assumed that the system had just detected some minor sliding of one of the wheels as I was coming to a stop, possibly from some loose gravel or rocks. Later that day, I decided to stop at the local home depot, on my way home from work. When I pulled into a parking spot, I pushed on the brake pedal and could hear the ABS pump (?) working very hard. The brake pedal would not move at all, and the brake system did not seem to be stopping any of the wheels. I only had a fraction of a second to react, so I threw the transmission into reverse. This stopped the forward motion of the truck, and I put it into park, before it could move any more. I ended up stopped about a foot from the rear bumper of the car in the space ahead of me. If a pedestrian had run out in front of me earlier, and I had been unable to stop, they might have been killed. Through all this, none of the ABS, brake, or check engine warning lights ever came on. I do not think that a vehicle with this low mileage should have such a potentially fatal problem, and the ABS components should not corrode, as they did in the lumina, and possibly in the Silverado, if the vehicle is not driven regularly. It doesn't matter if the vehicle is turning or going straight. The vehicle has 4 wheel antilock. The owner has not called the dealer yet. Vehicle is regularly serviced but has not been tested yet. No warning light illuminated. A vibration could be felt and heard in the brake pedal.

Vehicle brakes do not function correctly at low speed. Apparently an ABS malfunction caused by corrosion of an ABS sensor. Vehicle would not stop causing me to run over a curb.

The problem began about a month when coming to a stop sign, and after applying brakes extended stopping distance was required, and brakes shuddered. Vehicle was regularly serviced. The ABS light did not come on. Happened in all driving conditions under normal braking conditions. Owner believed they were 4 wheel anti lock brakes. The problem is intermittent, happening about every other time the brakes are applied at slow speeds. At about 5 mph. Dealer stated that the ABS sensors were dirty, and had to be cleaned. Owner replaced the brakes at 30,000 miles, and brakes began to cause problems after the installation of new brakes. ABS sensors failed and was not covered in warranty. Rear rotors replaced at 30,000 miles when being replaced chunks of metal fell off dealer said consumer was lucky to get 30,000 miles out of them.
