Consumer states when the vehicle is in 4-wheel drive, and he accelerates quickly, and then lets up on the brakes, the ABS goes into effect without consumer touching the brake pedal, this only happens when there is snow/ice on the roads, consumer has no control of the braking, consumer contacted the manufacturer and was informed that they were aware of the problem and had no plans of correcting it.

The anti-lock brake pump, a major componet, of the ABS system, continues to run constantly. This causes a drain on the battery. The pump must be disconnected to prevent battery drain. Disconnecting disables the anit-lock system. At only 22,000 miles this is obscene! dealer refuses to pay for repair.

The ebcm of the ABS shorted causing the electric pump motor to run continously. There are only two methods to discontinue its operation, one is to pull the 60 amp fuse under the hood, the other is to disconnect the connector at the module, under the drivers side door. Researching this problem on the internet, I have located an unbelievable amount of information on the 1999 Silverado ABS failure. It appears to most common between 30K-60K miles. The manufacture has introduced a new part number for its replacement while contending there is no issue. The replcement cost is approximately $1000., while the actual dealer purchase price for the part is $386., it appears to create revenue. While there may be no safety issue related to this problem, I believe there is enough incidents to classify as a manufacture defect.

Turned truck on this morning and ABS light would not go off. Shut truck off and the ABS "compressor" stays on. Contacted local Chevrolet dealer and they said that is a common problem - no recalls, no resolve except to replace unit for more than $400 + labor. ABS has always reacted unexpectedly on uneven roads(bumps or railroad tracks) and inconsistently on wet surfaces (sometimes grabbing the road, other times free wheeling).

While under warranty I complained to dealer that the anti-lock brakes were to sensitive and would engage while braking on the slightest bump, lenghtening the stopping distance. Of course they never can duplicate the problem. Now with 41000 miles, I start the truck and the ABS light comes on. I get home and hear a noise from under the vehicle with the key off. I had to unplug the ABS pump to shut it off. I called the dealer and they said this is a common problem and the cost of the unit alone is $780. After researching this I've found the number of this type of failures are astounding!! there is no excuse for this failure, ABS has been around for over 15 years now. GM knows there is a major problem with their ABS braking system and should be made to recall & fix this problem before someone is killed!! anyone who has paid for this should be re-inbursed for their expense. This failure seems to happen around the 40,000 mile mark just after the warrany has expired.

- ABS pump runs continually. - had to unplug the pump, and I now have no ABS brakes. The antilock brake controller failed. I talked to the dealer here in tupelo, and he said that it was out of warranty and they would not fix it unless I paid. I checked on the cost and they said that it would cost around $950 but would be about a month because they only had a couple of the units that would fit my truck and they were keeping them on hand for warranty calls. I asked them why the long delay and they said they were going out quite often. I called GM customer service to inquire and was told they were unaware of any problems with the antilock systems on my year of truck. That did not seem to be the same information I received from the dealer, so I called 7 more dealers in the surrounding area and talked to the service departments. All I had to do was say that I was having problems with my antilock brakes and they said "oh is the pump running all the time?" they said that was a very common problem and they had to replace them all the time. I then thought that I would see if I could locate a used one in a salvage yard and replace the controller my self... I called numerous salvage yards and found quite a few of 1999 Silverado's but all of them had already had the controller removed. I then called GM back and told them of what I had found out, they were very nice but in effect told me "tough" so I thought I would write to you and file my complaint and see if you have had any others.
