Silverado 3500 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 48,500 miles
1999 Chevrolet Silverado. ABS motor runs continuous even after shutting off the truck. Removed fuse to shut down the system. I am told by dealership, not under warranty or recall. Repair part alone will cost over $800. I don't think this type of safety equipment should fail at 49,000 miles. I don't have the money for repairs. This unforeseen failure decreases the safety and the value of my investment.

The ABS motor on my 1999 Silverado ext. Cab 2- wheel drive 5.3L motor would not shut off. I had to pull the fuse to get it to stop and not run down the battery. I took it to the dealer and they said it would cost $975 to replace the module. The truck has 52,000 miles on it. I looked on the internet and this is a common problem. GM should repair this for free.

On 03/29/03 the ABS system failed on my 1999 Silverado truck. After turning off the ignition I could still hear the ABS motor continuing to run. I had to pull the 60 amp fuse to keep from running the battery down. I looked at this site and notice several other 1999 Silverado owners with the same problem. The prospect of shelling out $1000 to fix a vehicle with less than 50,000 miles will definitely make me reconsider my loyalty to GM products.

I just bought this vehicle, and a week later the anti-lock relay switch stuck in the on position. Running the battery down, and disabling the anti-lock brake system. Now I have to pay $700 for this little part or I have no active working brakes. Dealers will not fix this because it's not part of the drive train.........help!

General Motors has indicated that pretty much every 1999 Silverado will have this defect. The ABS motor will stick on and not shut off even if the truck is off. You have to pull the fuse out. The dynamic rear proportioning system is now not working. Which balances the front to rear brake balance. GM know this part is defective and has recalled it on the 2000 model year but not the 1999 model year. I am sure you already know about how many others are like this and could cause the truck to handle different leading to possible accident. Repair cost are around 1000 dollars and many people will not have it replace.

I have had three problems with the ABS brakes. First problem was the truck would not stop while towing my tailer with electric brakes and doing 10mph on dry, level road. The second was same as first but without the tailer. Both times the dealer found nothing. The third was that the rear rotors had rusted over and the pads were down to the metal backing. This was all before 21,000 miles and I had to pay for the pads. GM only paid for the rotors. Now the truck is out of warranty the module has gone bad and after several phone calls to GM they said they will only pay 30% of the repair bill and I will have to pick up the other 70%. talking to the dealer they tell me GM has a problem and GM knows it. GM told the dealer the trucks were not designed for the weather in the northeast (snow, salt, water) so why are they selling these trucks where they know their going to have problems. This problem is going to get someone hurt if not kill if someone doesn't do something about it. A mechanic friend at the GMC dealership in town said that the location of the ABS system is the biggest problem. He also said that they have replaced quit a few units in the last two years in GMC trucks. Why don't they do a recall and fix the problem.

ABS module failure ABS module runs continuously and must be shut off at the fuse or it will run down battery. The part must be replaced as a dealer part (no aftermarket) at a cost of $1000 plus. Dealer indicated that failure is a systematic problem with the 1999 model. Has been corrected for 2000 model. This should be a recall item!
