When driving at any speed and applying the brakes, they freeze up. Brake pedal is barely touched and brakes lock instantly causing occupants to jolt forward. A vehicle close behind may not have time to stop to crash. ABS is working intermittently.

First set of front disc pads replaced on 1/20/98 (29362 miles on odometer). Grinding noise on braking noted in 12/98. Inspection on 12/14/98 by GMC dealer found need to replace front pads due to wear (40610 miles on odometer). Problem is excessive and rapid brake wear. We do not ride the brakes. Pads subsequent replaced by non-GMC dealership.

Upon applying force to the brake pedal to make a sudden stop on wet pavement the pedal traveled to the floorboard, causing extended stopping distance. Also, the anti- lock brakes locked up, resulting in the vehicle skidding. Consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer has also replaced master cylinder.
