Our Traverse has a groaning noise coming from the steering column at slow speeds. I had the dealership diagnose the problem. They came back telling me it needed a new steering rack because it will get worse and possibly I will loose my power steering entirely without warning. In doing some research and visiting with repair shops it is evident that this is a recurring issue and needs to be resolved by GM with a safety recall. GM has since redesigned the defect for newer model cars. I can only hope this gets resolved soon before there is serious injury.

At slow speeds (under 25 mph) power steering fails making it very difficult to steer. No accidents yet, but there have been numerous close calls entering driveways or making turns at intersections where I could not steer tightly when the power assists goes out - barely missing other vehicles and pedestrians. Repair shop stated that fluid levels are fine, the pump is working, and there are no leaks in the system. Dealer service stated that there are no recalls. Now that I have over 100,000 miles I am being told I will be responsible for all repair costs.

The issue was first observed when initiating a 90 degree right hand turn into a parking space at approximately 10mph. The wheel did not respond to the turn and felt as if it was being grabbed or pinched, the only driver option was to immediately apply the brakes. The wheel then had to be muscled in order to turn the vehicle. Since that instance, this issue has increased in frequency and has become a daily occurrence. The issue has been observed by all three regular drivers of the vehicle. More often than not, the vehicle must be reversed to re-initiate the turn so as not to hit other vehicles or pedestrians. Additionally, it was independently observed by our mechanic when taking the vehicle for a test drive after performing unrelated work on the vehicle. A related issue observed includes a sensation of pinching or binding of the steering wheel when initiating a turn at low speed; after experiencing this brief sensation the wheel then turns without issue. The dangerous aspect of this issue is that the driver is not certain that the wheel is actually going to turn. However the driver cannot just apply the brakes as that may result in getting rear ended and at the same time is apprehensive about muscling the wheel. The vehicle was just brought in for inspection of the steering issues by our certified Chevrolet service center. Their diagnosis indicated that the steering rack requires replacement at an estimated cost of $1600 and needs two (2) days in the shop. They indicated it was not a drive train warranty item. Current mileage on the vehicle is approximately 80,000 miles.

2010 Chevrolet Traverse. Power steering goes in and out while turning at slow speeds - it sometimes works/sometimes not. Particularly noticeable when attempting to park, or turn from at stop at an intersection. Very much a safety concern due to the unexpected loss of the power steering while trying to make a turn - either into a parking spot, or while turning through traffic at an intersection, and then the strength needed to turn the wheel. Problem started at less than 60K miles. After some research, appears this is a common problem for the Traverse and related GM vehicles.

Power steering would lock up for 5 approximately seconds when making a turn at a slow speed 25 mph or less. Seems to be doing it more frequently 1-2 times per day. Had it looked at a Chevy dealer could find no thing wrong. Had it at a local repair shop he changed the power steering fluid-stated that it appeared really dark and dirty. This did not help with the steering problem.

I have a 2010 Traverse. With in the last 3 months the steering has become a daily problem. When making turns from 25mph or less you loose control of the car. The steering will freeze up when it chooses. Sometimes it will happen at the start of a turn sending you straight toward on coming traffic!! we had it in for an oil change (May 2014) and asked the dealer to check the steering. Dealer said there was nothing wrong and the vehicle is fine. It still continues to occurrence on a daily basis. We don't have the money to bring it to the dealer to have the pump replaced. I'm looking for other options on how to repair/replace it the most economical way? until I have this problem resolved it will mostly be just an around the town vehicle do to the fear of it may happen while on the highway. I cant believe with this many complaints GM hasn't done anything to correct this problem. Its time for a recall.

As the mileage on this vehicle reached around 80,000 at times it became more and more difficult to steer at slow speeds such as in parking lots. I thought it might had been the tires but after having all tires replaced and aligned this steering issue continues. The problem is steadily becoming worse. I have not experienced any steering problems at speeds of 55+ but I see from the other complaints that it may be an expensive repair.

When I purchased this vehicle, shortly after I had it, I began noticing a stiffness whenever I would turn corners at intersections, or into parking spaces, etc. This issue is becoming more and more frequent and has put me in some very dangerous situations when turning into traffic. Often times I have had to back up and start over when turning as I would never make it to where I am going safely. At intersections there have been times that I would almost end up in oncoming traffic because the vehicle would not turn correctly for me. When I brought this up to the dealer they told me that because it was an all-wheel drive that was a common problem. Now after they fixed something else on my car and I had them look at this issue, they determined that is was in fact my power steering pump and the box that goes with it, which is going to cost me an additional $2400 to repair. I have had this vehicle for about 4 months now (1 month of this time they had it to repair my engine) so I feel that I am getting ripped off with this vehicle. Sad thing is that I really loved this car but am against putting this much money into something that seems to be a huge issue with GM. I have read the complaints online and there are numerous people that have the same make/model/year vehicle as me and are having the same problem. Someone needs to do something about this before someone gets into an accident.

Steering has become difficult. Recently becoming harder to turn. Vehicle is garage kept and noticed a pink puddle of fluid. This turned out to be the power steering fluid. We took to a mechanic friend who put vehicle up on a rack. He advised that the rack and pinion need to be replaced. I am terrified to drive this vehicle now. He says it will cost $1200 to fix. We don't have that kind of money. Chevy needs to put a recall on this before someone gets hurt. I love love my Traverse but am afraid to drive with my children or anyone for that matter. Please insist on a recall.

On 6/6/14, I felt a loss of power steering going around a corner at 25 mph. I checked several website and this seems to be a very common issue.
