My passenger airbag light came on and it's been on for a while now. I went to a Chevy Volt forum on google and apparently it's a problem that my Chevy Volt owners are having so I think that this should be a safety issue since it involves the airbag.

Volt

  • 68,000 miles
The passenger airbag sensor triggered a warning (vehicle in motion). Took vehicle to dealer and they tried the typical loose connection check, water damage check, etc. Removed sensor and tested it - not pulling any current, so must be bad and need replacement. Total cost to replace $1,200!! if it's not replaced, airbags are disabled to protect against accidental deployment. I decided to pass and pretend that the car was built in the 1970S (ie, no airbags and just relying on seatbelts).

Passenger air bag seat occupancy sensor intermittent function at 52K miles. Would disable passenger air bag randomly whether moving or stationary. Had dealer serviced, which replaced passenger seat occupancy sensor, for $1086.

I get a service airbag warning. I receive the message on startup and at random intervals the car will chime, and display the "service airbag" message. A red icon of a person wearing a seatbelt with an airbag deployed is displayed on the instrument panel and remains on, at all times that the car is on. I don't know the exact date this first occurred. I have owned the car for about 8 months. I bought it from a Chevrolet dealer.

Volt

  • 74,000 miles
The front passenger air bag frequently signals that service is required. Occupied, unoccupied, bag of groceries, or occupied when occupant shifts around a little. Similar reports indicate that service requires expensive calibration with little confidence in a lasting corrective outcome. Can be stationary at beginning of trip, during trip while moving - no obvious correlation. Happens more and more frequently, beginning at least a year ago.

The contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that the service air bag warning indicator intermittently illuminated. Jul 182019

Volt

  • 116,000 miles
An apparent failure of the passenger seat occupancy sensor prevents correct operation of the airbag system. When a light object is on the seat, or when a passenger exits the seat, a service airbag system light comes on and persists until the next vehicle power cycle. The problem is intermittent. Initial research points to the seat sensor as the culprit, but the repair is outlandishly expensive, and prevents owners from seeking the repair, especially when the dealer cannot guarantee that the repair will succeed.

Volt

  • 56,000 miles
There's a persistent issue with the airbag sensor for the passenger seat, where it will either 1) give an error warning when no one is in the seat, or 2) temporarily not register the presence of a passenger in the seat. In the latter instance the airbag is temporarily taken offline while a person is actually in the seat, and it turns on and off whenever the passenger shifts their weight. These error warnings occur with every start up of the vehicle.

Airbag warning light due to seat sensor has been on since 40000 miles. Took it to dealer and they said it's out of warranty will cost 1000. At the time the warning was frequent but intermittent. Now the warning is all of the time. Multiple Volt owners online have complained about this issue. Please investigate.

About four weeks ago my service airbag light came on. No car crash and no wet seat for the sensor to go off. The light just came on when I turned the car one morning on my way to work. I use the car to commute to work and back home, have no children 70% of the time I drive alone.

"service airbag" sensor issue on the 2013 Chevy Volt. Is seems to be a common issue per the prior complaints I see. As stated by others, no water damage or anything has occured on the passenger side of my vehicle. In fact, I've only had people actually ride in the passenger seat 5 times in total in all the years that I've had it. So basically it isn't used. The issue is an airbag / sensor issue and there should be a recall by Chevy to fix said issue! as others have stated. It does come and come but has been more frequent as of late even though the car passenger seat is not used!

Volt

"service airbag" warning light and console message appears intermittently, mainly in warm weather. Dealer says it will cost $1100 to fix definitively - for 3 years. This appears to be the only way GM will guarantee the airbag will inflate. Many other Volt owners on the GM Volt forum (https://GM-Volt.com/forum/) have had this problem and at least one has filed a complaint with you.

Volt

  • 81,000 miles
Service air bag system message comes up on dash briefly and goes away again quickly. After some research online, I'm finding this is most likely cause by the passenger seat airbag sensor or seat occupancy sensor. It has only happened in our Volt when I had a front seat passenger so this makes complete sense. This is a very common issue on 2012, 2013 and 2014 Chevy Volts at least and should be recalled and repaired by GM. This is a safety issue. The repair is around $800 and that should not be the case with a safety issue on many vehicles U see 100K miles. We have 81K on ours. I saw the issue happened to other Volts in my research as low as 27K miles. When this happens, I have just started the vehicle, it is stationary and people are getting into seats and buckling belts. Longest the message has come on was about 45sec with most occurrences more like 10-15 sec before message clears. This were all in suburb type settings and not the first use of the day for the vehicle but rather later on in day second or more use for the day.

No unusual activity. No spills or other occurrence that could cause sensor to fail. Passenger seat presence detection sensor has failed. Car now reports a "service airbag" warning and has disabled the passenger side airbag because of it. This is a life-threatening error caused by a simple sensor failure that is showing a high failure rate with countless complaints on the internet. Most people are not repairing this sensor as it cost $1000 to $2000 to repair through the dealers that are not discounting or covering the cost of repair under warranty.
