I purchased a 2001 Chrysler Sebring NEW and had it regularly serviced (oil changes, etc.). On a trip back from the beach, my car, with no warning signs, began to sputter and make other terrible sounds. This only occurred for about 30 seconds and the car stopped. I was on a busy interstate and could have had an accident, but I was able to pull over into the grassy embankment. I had the car towed to the dealership and they told me there was no way to know that it would fail like that and that is was not repairable. I needed a new engine. I had just had my car serviced at the dealership 2 weeks before! I contacted Chrysler Corporation and they told me they would work with me to give me a new engine if I could show proof that it was regularly serviced (especially oil changes). I provided this documentation and just found out they would not accept the claim because one of the documents was handwritten! It was handwritten by the owner of the oil company where I got the oil changed. They said it could be forged. Well, I am livid about this situation. An engine should not fail like that and I believe that there should be a manufacturer recall. I could have had an accident and I was stranded in Kinston, NC where I knew no one. I was on the roadside for 4 hours waiting for a tow and I missed work as well. So, it was a really awful experience. I think that Chrysler should replace my engine because that is unacceptable. I have owned 2 Toyotas that far exceeded that mileage and never had ANY problems with them. And I didn't even take as good care of them! I highly recommend an engine recall!

Last week I noticed that my car seemed to be driving a little rough, which was strange b/c I had not had any problmes with this vehicle before. I sped up to pass a car and after I did that my car started to make a really strange "rattling" type noise everytime I accelerated. It then stalled while I was stopped at a red light. I got the car towed and was told that my engine was completely ruined and that I would need to replace it, which would cost me $6500.00. Apparently there was an oil sludge problem, although my car was maintained and got regular oil changes. I will NEVER purchase a Chrysler/Dodge vehicle again and I am definitely going to talk to anyone I know who is thinking of puchasing one and tell them to save their money .. a Chrysler/Dodge vehicle will only end up costing thousands of dollars in the long run for repairs .. it's just not worth it.

My mechanic asked me if my car had the 2.7 L motor as soon as I told him what kind of car I drove. He didn't even know the problem when he asked. I would say there is definitely a problem. I will never buy another Chrysler unless they step up and fix this problem.

My brother got my oil changed mid-July at which time they told him that he had to pay an extra cost to clean up some type of oil build up. He complied and two weeks later I was driving to work and my car overheated. I put antifreeze in it and oil but it still was overheating and stalling. I took to the mechanic who said I needed a new engine. I bought the car used but I only have had it 6 months. As of right now I don't have a car and will probably get this one reposessed. I'm thinking about getting a lawyer because there are so many complaints.

Timing chain busted through the top of the engine. Have not had fixed yet I am sure this will lead back to sludge in the engine. I guess lesson learned. NEVER BUY CHRYSLER THEY ARE JUNK. While we will get screwed in the end every dog has its day. You would almost have to compare Chrylser to the Oil industry if not worse.

While I'm getting off the freeway and stop at the stop light my car suddenly cuts off. No engine light, not oil light, nothing. I restarted the car and managed to get it about 3 miles down the road to a gas station. I checked the oil, there was no problem there. I restarted the car and it ended up dying in the middle of the road, this time it wouldn't restart. I had to have it towed to a nearby mechanic who told me after inspecting the vehicle that I would be needing a new engine. He also said that this was a common problem with these 2.7 liter engines and that the problem was in no way caused by any fault of my own. My car is still under warranty and of course the only place I can take it to have it repaired is to a Chrysler or Dodge dealership. So I had it towed to the Chrysler dealership and they immediately asked for copies of all my oil change receipts. Even though I gave them the receipts that proved I had been keeping up the maintenance on the car they would not cover the repairs under warranty because they said it was my fault. I still owe $9000 on the car and they want me to pay $6000 for a new engine! I don't think so! It is obvious that Chrysler and Dodge do not stand behind their products. DO NOT BUY either of these cars!!

The limited 2001 Sebring convertible my wife drove began to "clatter" and my wife was unsure of driving it home from Dallas, Tx about two hours west of our home. We met the wrecker drive on Saturday morning. Before, he arrived I drove it some and noticed a rattle at RPM just above idle speed and a slight knock in the engine. It was towed to Bankston Chyrsler in Frisco, Texas. The wrecker driver started the car and drove it off the ramp into the shop. The Dealer needed authorization to inspect the car for the Equis insurance company (extended warranty) to view the problem. They dropped the pan and oil pump and summarily denied the claim saying sludge in the engine starved the engine bearings of oil. We had submitted oil change, service records indicating reasonable service and sent the same to the Equis home office to no avail. Bankston quote to repair the engine was $6,500. After paying Bankston Chrysler $275 for their inspection, I went to Dallas and used a car dolly to return the car home. It is now at Peters Chevrolet/Chryler with the used engine in it, but it won't crank. Today they are installing a new engine computer to see if it will run. Will this part be covered by the "extended warranty"? Who knows? My wife and I are extremely disappointed that the car ran fine for two and a half years and then CRATERED. Why did we not have any indication? With all the alarms you have on emissions and other things on a car, you would think the engine light would come on and at least say "Well, stupid, how does it feel to be a real sucker!"

On 1/31/2006 my 2001 Chrysler Sebring 4-dr Sedan started making a knocking sound. I took it in to the dealer on 2/2/2006 and was told that I needed a new engine to the tune of $6,331. I was charged a $49 diagnostic charge and told that they couldn't be certain of the damage unless they took apart the engine for an additional $300. The service advisor warned me that since they didn't know the extent of the damage that there was a possibility that they wouldn't be able to put the engine back together. After hearing that, I declined the service. After researching my vehicle and the 2.7L engine on the internet, I found this site and have read so many other consumers' stories. It's truly heartbreaking that this is happening. I contacted Chrysler customer service and of course they were not willing to help at all because the warranty had expired. Because of what I've read about this particular engine, I'm afraid to spend the money to have a used engine put it. More than likely I will have to cut my losses and purchase another vehicle. However, it will NOT be a Chrysler.

My ex-husband was driving the vehicle back from Dallas. Going through a toll plaza, the engine made a clicking noice and then just stopped. We had it towed to the Chrysler dealership where they told us it needed to be replaced. The reason they gave us, sludge resulting in engine failure meant that the warranty would not cover the damage since it was considered a lack of maintenance. Even though this vehicle was maintained, it didn't matter. There was no warning at all that there were any problems with the engine!

Loud noise in engine was previously low noise when 1st taken to the dealer at approximately 12000 miles. they indicate it was nothing. Each time I went back for an oil change,I lodged a complaint and they said they hear nothing. Now you can hear the loud noise and the new dealer Jacksonville Chrysler who replaced Mike Shad Chrysler indicate the engine failed due to lack of oil change, which is not correct. I need a new engine and they estimate the cost to be $6000. to replace. I need the name of the district mgr for Chrysler as the Customer Service line not my E-mail request are going unanswered. Will the person with sludge in the engine tell me how to get in touch with Chrysler district manager. I tried leaving messages no call back.

On Oct. 22, 2002, we took the car to Sarasota Chrysler for various warranty repair problems. #1 problem loud tapping noise in engine. They changed the oil, although it had just been changed at 12,000 miles, and said there was sludge in the engine. On Jan. 3, 2003, we took the car in again for the same problem. Loud tapping in engine.. they said they could not duplicate the concern and we should use synthetic oil at the next oil change. On Jan. 14, 2003, again back to the dealer..loud tapping noise in engine. They changed the oil at 15,000 miles using synthetic oil. On Jan. 28, 2003 we took the car to Brandenton, Fl, Firkins Chrysler. They kept the car for 10 days and never turned a wrench. We picked up the car from Firkins on Feb.7, 2003. The service tech falsified the paperwork making it appear that the car was dropped off and picked up on Feb. 7. This of course was disputed as we had been at the dealership many times between Jan. 28th and Feb. 7th. On Feb. 25, 2003 we took the car to Venice Chrysler. They determined there was indeed sludge in the engine. They spoke with the district rep. from Chrysler. The district rep. suggested a thorough cleaning and changing the oil. What a laugh. The mechanics knew it wasn't going to work. They did it and the engine was louder than before. On Friday, March 7, 2003, the service manager called us to say that they had ordered a new engine. He had called Chrysler. Between the incompetence of Sarasota Chrysler and Bradenton Firkins Chrysler, this has been an absolute nightmare. We have all documentation pertaining to this vehicle. If your car has tapping noises don't let them mislead you. I do not think our vehicle is the only one with this problem.
