problem #34

Caravan

  • 33,000 miles
Vehicles transmission line keeps disconnecting for the bottom of the vehicle. This results in a fuel leak, which can cause an accident, due to the fact if a vehicle is behind when the fuel leaks they can slide into the back of the consumer. The dealership replace parts but the problem recurs. This is a common problem with this make/model vehicle.

This is the third Dodge I've owned that the transmisson has failed. I know this has been problem but I thought it had been corrected but I guess it hasn't. I'm having it repaired by an independent garage and would like for Dodge to pay for it.

On April 18, 2002 I took the vehicle into the dealer for them to investigate a noise which sounded like metal on metal. Service drove my vehicle and after hearing noise for himself, they put it on the rack and said "we tightened a few things" (on worksheet stated "checked engine") and said to come back if additional problems. On the morning of May 2, 2002, I returned home from an errand and parked my van in the garage. Later that day I went outside and noticed drippings in the street in front of my home into my drive and garage. Backed the car up a little and discovered a pool of pinkish fluid. Neighbor came over and verified that it was transmission fluid. I called dealer and was told to drive the vehicle to their service department. I did so. Left the vehicle. They called me later in the day and informed me that my van needed a new transmission. The explanation was that "differential pin came loose and went through case. Not rebuildable." So, the transmission was replaced. I have written to Chrysler and the local dealership is aware of that; in fact, last week, district people were to have been here, supposedly to meet on this; however, I have received no information from them regarding the resolution of this.

Consumer states there were several transmission problems during the warranty period, there was a noise present when putting vehicle in gear and it also felt sluggish, there was a shake in the front end due to the transmission not being adjusted correctly, the torque converter, output sensor, input sensor, and shift kit had to be replaced due to the torque converter coming apart, causing metal to go throughout the complete transmission and valve body.

The van was taken in 2 times during the warranty period. They attempted some repaires. The second time they said they could not find the problem, but they would document it incase there were problems later.. I contacted the manufacturer who stated that they new there was a problem with that model year, but there was no recall so they were not going to do anything about it. No safety defect listed.

Transmission failed twice during the warranty period. Dealer informed me of unknown cause of the problems (transmission sensor) to go bad twice, but was happy to replace it for free (suspicious, nobody does this for free unless there is a problem). Notified Dodge since it was nearing the end of waranty and filed a complaint.

1999 Grand Caravan purchased new, transmission failed with approx 10000 miles repaired, still not right dealer unable to duplicate problem. Car can lunged forward with very slight pressure on gas pedal taken for routine oil change by independent station, found transmission fluid leaking said poss seal worn at 17000 miles.car has very unusual acceleration patterns I am the full time driver of this vehicle and after two years I still am unsure on how to handle it when accelerating to highway speeds it is very unpredictable. Another problem we have seen with it is the brakes. We had it back to dealer at 10K miles for noise from back wheels, they told us it was a loose car seat, what do they think we are stupid. The whistling has been constant, even after telling them to look into it this time they said the hubcaps were bent and the noise was coming from that, they never checked the brakes, low and behold, we now need a $400 plus full brake job. I am so fed up with this disaster of a car.any info on bulletins in.

Caravan

The transmission does not downshift out of overdrive. At 43-47 mph, the car lurches and acceleretion is impossible. The first incident occured on April 14 when the car would not accelerate up a hill. Everytime the car was slowing down from 50 mph while going up a hill, the car would lurch and acceleration was impossible. The car came back to the dealership the week of April 23rd but the dealership could not reproduce the problem. A monitor was placed on the car over memorial day weekend but nothing showed up. Again, I brought the car in but the dealership could not reproduce the problem. June 18th I drove with a mechanic and reproduced the pattern within ten minutes after leaving the dealership. The chief mechanic for palmen said it definately was the transmission and replaced the transmission solenoid pack. The problem continued the follwing week when we were on vacation. I brought the car back in and the manager kept it from July 3rd through the 5th. No repairs were made but the put on over 100 miles confirming the problem. They said it was electrical. I was to hear back from them on Monday, July 9th but I had to go in July 11th to find out that they had no results. In the meanwhile, I had driven to louisville and back in the car only to have the same problems continue while I was stuck in a dangerous weather situation(high winds and rain). The car bucked at 42 mph and I could not accelerate. This is a potentially dangerous situation if I cannot get the car to accelerate when the transmission "gets stuck". please help.

The transmission has gone out on my 1999 Dodge Caravan twice. The first time was at 35908 miles and only 17 months old. It was the speed sensor. The second time was at 40,100 miles and less than 20 months old. I was told the torque converter came aprart!! this transmission had to be replaced and was not covered by Dodge because it was outside of the 36,000 manufacturers warranty. I have had numerous problems with this less than 2 year old car, but the most worrisome has been the transmission failures because they have occured while my wife was driving alone and in heavy traffic, leaving her stranded.

While driving at approximately 25 to 30 mph, a noise was emitted from front of vehicle, as if the vehicle had started dragging a metal can. Shortly afterwards vehicle lost all power. After inspection of problem, a puddle of transmission fluid began forming under vehicle. Dealership stated that a pin in differential broke, which ruined transmission.
