After only 38,000 miles, my Dodge dealer in 2001 advised me my ball joints were defective and needed repair on my 1999 Dodge Dakota 4X4. Out of warrenty by only 2000 miles and only about a year old, they advised me to keep the paper work and parts, if there ever was a recall.

During a routein tire rotation at my Chrysler dearer it was discovered that after only 44,529 miles the ball joints were ready to fail on my 1999 Dakota sport cc pickup. Before I left the dealer he replaced the upper and lower ball joints both sides and the left and right inner tie rod ends. I was lucky I went in for a tire rotation.

Had ball joints replaced once already and thy need to be replaced agian. First time on my extended warranty, this time will be at my expense. If this is an example of new vehicle manufacturing to have to replace safety components every 2 years. I would rather go back to the older vehicles. There are no grease fittings on the new stile ball joints.

I took my 1999 Dodge Dakota pickup truck in to have it aligned. The mechanics at big O tire told me it could not be aligned due to bad upper and lower ball joints and tie rod ends. Big O tires informed me that not only were the parts worn prematurely, but that it presented a dangerous situation and that my wheels could fall off the truck. I did not believe big O, so I took the truck to loveland bear alignment for a second opinion. Loveland bear alignment verified what big O told me, and in addition told me that to use Chrysler parts would not be acceptable because the Chrysler replacement parts were as defective as the parts being replaced and that it would not solve the problem of premature wear and danger of the wheels falling off. The vehicle had 67,571 miles on it at the time I was told this. Due to both the safety concern over my wheels possibly falling off and the need to align the vehicle to avoid wearing out my new tires, I ordered the ball joint and tie rod ends replaced with lifetime warranty aftermarket parts followed by alignment. The repairs to my vehicle cost approximately $1,037. So far, the only consequences were premature wear on the last set of tires and the fact that I was compelled to replace the parts for safety concern and the ability to perform a front end alignment on the vehicle. The old parts are not available. I now understand that there is a recall in effect for this vehicle but only for 2000 and newer vehicles. I want you to be informed that the defect also affects at least some vehicles manufactured in 1999 and to request that you extend the recall to include my vehicle.

Not necessarily an incident, yet... but how come 1999 Dodge Dakotas are not affected by the new recall on the ball joints"!!?!? the '99 is the exact same design as the 2000 Dakota. I have a rwd 99 Dakota, and I had the ball joints replaced 3 times since I've owned it. Three times. Daimler Chrysler doesn't care if our wheels fall off?!? I had warning once of three times when my ball joints were shot. What were to happen if I rolled my truck and died"! I can't believe that the recall for the ball joints only affects the 2000-2003 models, I know from plenty of other Dakota owners, the 99's are every bit as bad, if not worse. Same design = same problems. I'm not paying for DC to do my ball joints again, there is no reason the 1999S should be excludeed from the recall. If the balljoints on the 200S are bad, then being the same ones on the 99S will go just as bad. I'm glad to see somebody finally stepped in and did something about this, but I am very dissapointed in the fact that the recall doesn't include all the years with the same design flaw. There is no reason for it, and quite frankly, it infuriates me.....

I have a 1999 Dodge Dakota 4X4 with the same ball joint safety issue that has resulted in the recall of 2000 - 2004 models. Dodge is refusing to fix the safety related issue. I spoke with stew hansen Dodge (where I purchased the vehicle) and they will not fix the issue under the current recall.

I was informed and shown that my ball joints (upper and lower) and tie rods were severely worn out and needed repair. Today, on the news, I heard about a recall for 2000-2003 Dakotas for this defect. Is there anything in the works to include 1999 Dakota's?

The steering of my vehilcle displayed excess movement and made a clicking / loose kind of sound when changing steering direction. It was necessary for me to replace the front end of my 1999 Dodge Dakota. This consisted of the upper and lower ball joints on both sides. This was not covered by the dealer. I had all work performed by my local mechanic at my expense. I saw the article on line regarding the possible recall and would like to know if my vehicle as well as those of others who have experiencedn this condition and have paid for these repairs themselves can be considered part of this action and possibly receive reinbursment to off set these expenses.

Continuous ABS problems. Some times the ABS brakes will apply without touching the brake pedal, most of the time the ABS won't work at all, ABS sensors are continuously needing replacement, all 4 front end ball joints worn out, noisy rear end, only 50,000 miles.

1999 Dodge Dakota-upper and lower ball joints. Notice a clanking noise during rough roads and in turns. In icy conditions, the control of the vehicle can be poor. Prolonged wear can cause the entire wheel to fall off at any speeds. I have been on many other forums to see if any one else has had to replace these. It seems to be a very frequent thing for people to have to replace these. Upon removal of the ball joints, I discovered that they were missing one thing that keeps them from wearing out....grease. New upper and lower ball joints are to be replaced asap before a serious accident occurs.
