Summary
On April 11, 2019, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) issued safety recall 19V-293 on all 2013-2016 Dodge Dart vehicles equipped with 6-speed automatic transmissions and produced between February 24, 2012 and October 4, 2016.The recall addresses deteriorated and detached shifter cable bushings on the transmission end of the shifter cable by replacing them with a new more robust bushing that prevents deterioration from chemicals, oils, and solvents. The updated bushing is also more ductile than the recalled bushing.? If a shifter cable becomes detached from the transmission, the subject vehicle-??s transmission may not shift into gear when the driver uses the shifter to select a new gear. This issue may arise at any time when selecting a new gear, including when a driver is trying to put the vehicle into PARK. This issue is not always immediately apparent when it occurs, as the shifter moves to the location of the intended gear like normal, but the vehicle-??s transmission does not actually change gears. If the driver-??s door is opened while the transmission is not in PARK, the -??vehicle not in PARK-?? and -??door ajar-?? warning lights will display on the instrument cluster. An audible chime will also sound, warning the driver the vehicle is not in PARK. If a driver exits the vehicle while it is not in PARK, the vehicle may move in an unintended way, including potentially rolling away and crashing. NHTSA has received forty-four (44) consumer complaints (VOQs) alleging worn or misadjusted shifter cables and shifter cable detachments after the 19V-293 recall remedy was completed. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is opening this Recall Query (RQ) to review the effectiveness of the original recall remedy, understand the root cause of the bushing failures, and identify any other possible root cause that may affect the performance of the shifter cable. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
