In January of 05 had to have both upper and lower ball joints replaced, control arm, front brakes and new tires as a result of bad F/E suspension. Now today the speed sensor (and I am hoping that's it) has gone out on the transmission. I have had two window motor failures, a sudden drop in oil pressure causing the truck to stall and there is something wrong with the electrical system. There have been many complaints in regards to these failures and the Dodge Durango and although they have recalled other Dodge trucks for these issues - they have yet to have recalled the 1999. I have contacted Dodge since January of this year regarding this issue and they responded telling me that they hadn't had enough complaints to issue a recall. I find this hard to believe seeing all the complaints made to NHTSA and to Consumer Affairs in regards to this year and model. I also believe that the Dodge dealer I bought this truck from (used) sold it to me knowing of these problems - although this I doubt I could ever prove. I am thankful that the front wheels stayed on as long as they did as I have read of the ball joint issue causing wheel separation. This could have been a deadly situation for my family (4 small children - we rely on this as our only transportation) and I hope that the problem is fixed but have serious doubts.

(1) eighteen months prior to the accident, the upper and lower control arm assemblies were replaced by the dealer. (2) while driving, the right front wheel assembly collapsed causing a loss of control. Vehicle left the road, went through a utility pole, rolled twice causing a total loss of the vehicle. Police report indicates "it appears the accident was caused by mechanical failure." Witness supports accuracy of accident report. (3) dealer suggested complaint to chrylser. After investigation, daimler chrylser responds they "are not convinced that a manufacturing responsibility is associated with this incident." They also "declined any responsibility associated with this incident." Digital photos of vehicle, suspension and separated wheel assembly at the accident scene are available.

Vehicle was purchased on August 21, 1999. The ball joints were same type as those on recall for year beginning 2000. Two years and four months later the ball joints failed. The front passenger side power window had broken along with the two back power windows. There was also a cracked serpentine belt, the tensioner had frozen, the throttle body was dirty and the gasket was leaking.

There has not been an accident or injury as of yet. The obvious is the Dodge recall for defective ball joints. I purchased a new 1999 Durango which has only 43000 miles on it. I recently had the front brakes replaced and my mechanic informed that the ball joints were metal to metal. I own another vehicle that I drive daily. I emailed DaimlerChrysler and the response was the dealer "was empowered by DaimlerChrysler to determine the merits of any goodwill policy consideration for repairs beyond your manufacturer's warranty". I called the dealer and gave them all the pertinent information to that point. They informed the above information was not entirely true and they had to inspect the vehicle and then contact DaimlerChrysler to determine a solution. After the inspection I was informed that not only the upper and lower ball joints were bad but also the inner tie rod ends. They offered a 50/50 split for the sum of $725. I declined this offer due to the obvious. I feel that the faulty ball joints caused the tie rod ends to wear prematurely and should be categorized under the recall and covered 100%. the vehicle is in excellent condition and has far below the expected mileage. Our transmission would not shift to 3rd gear, removed, rebuilt and re-install, exchanged torque converter needed, replaced all solenoids and switch 12/31/04 started around 80,000 miles. Work done @ 80751. I am one of 3 people that I know who have (or had) a 99 Durango on my sons hockey team, all have had trouble with tranny, 1 at 64,000 miles, fixed and traded, other has same symptoms as ours, has 72,000 miles.-- online stories seem to indicate this is not an isolated problem, transmission shop said seems to be very common with early models tranny 42re"--date of build 9/98-- VIN#1B4hs28Y3X535962-- not to mention the new "0 oil pressure" reading that happened this past w/E, which seems to be popping up, will clean pan and replace pvc to see if that problem is solved as research indicates, and last but least- ball joints---and new tires will be needed due to uneven inside wearing, even if "rotated" every 7500 miles. Long term Chrysler owner, all vehicles over 125 K miles, never a problem--what recourse/satisafaction is there for this "

In addition to the broken tie rod all four ball joints were excessively worn and had to be replaced. The consumer contacted the manufacturer customer service line and was told that the problems his vehicle was having was not currently recall. The consumer was also told that his repair cost could not be reimbursed because they were made at a non Dodge dealer.
