I purchased my Durango (used) in June of 2003 with 30,500 miles--in July I needed the lower ball joints replaced. In August the shocks had to be replaced and in October the upper ball joints needed to be replaced. I don't think I will a. buy another Dodge or B. buy a used car. I am afraid to drive it especially after reading all the horrors of other owners...

My 1999 Durango slt 4 X 4 has serious front end problems. I had to have the ball joints in addition to other front end components replaced in order to make the vehicle safe to drive. Everybody seems to know, "everyone but me, " that this SUV is a rolling death trap. I have read so many complaints on the web that I felt like a sucker for re-entering the american car market. Chrysler knows that the ball joints on this vehicle are undersized and yet they have not recalled the vehicle. I am registering this complaint so that there is a record that yet another Dodge customer is out money due to their lack of quality control.

Suspension ball joints and bushings were replaced on both sides. Problems also with the transmission sensor. The ball joints, and bushings were replaced on both sides. The problem was with the transmission sensors which worked intermittently. The A/C, alternator and the water pump failed prematurely.

Consumer heard a popping noise coming from the front end of vehicle. The technician serviced vehicle and noticed four of the front bearings needed to be replaced. Stabilizer bar and rear leaf springs failed on the driver's side.

Consumer stated the ball joint wore out prematurely. Dealer notified. The control arms, intermediate shaft had been replaced in conjunction with the ball joints to try and solve the problem with the steering and suspension. Chrysler did not take any action to try to solve the problem. There was noise in the steering, rumble/rattle in the front end and had become louder, the steering had become loose, the lower ball joints were defective, and there was excessive play in the control arm.

When the brakes were applied, the front end pulled excessively to the right or left. Also, when making turns, consumer heard a loud "grinding" coming from the front end. Dealer diagnosed that the entire front end needed to be replaced due to ball joint failure. The whining noise was heard when going around curves. The marker lights had become inoperative when pulling out of "int" switch and the head lamp switch was replaced, and upon acceleration, there was a pinging noise in the passing gear.. the tie rods were also replaced.

Front ball joints/steering arm failure, brake failure, causing loss of steering and brakes to lock up, steering arms replaced three times, on both sides. Rear leaf spring snapped when vehicle was 3 months old. Steering wheel locks up when vehicle is shut off, and cannot be unlocked in certain positions with key.

After only 55,000 miles the entire front suspension system failed. Both upper control arms, ball joints, tie rods needed replacement. $1700 repair on a $30000 truck!

There was a popping noise in the front end, the dealer could not duplicate the problem. The consumer was told by a service dealer the steering assembly had excessive play. The consumer noticed on the right side rear upper bushing had torn a rubber grommet. Scc

The following have been replaced: Bushing, front stabilizer, sway bushing, cap for center wheel, and sway eliminator, consumer states vehicle shakes after 70 mph and is noisy when pressing the gas pedal, dealer states that there is damage undercarriage which is causing noise, however consumer states vehicle has never been in an accident, vehicle squeaks from shocks when sitting or getting out of vehicle.
