Complete engine failure. No prior warning. All oil changes and maintenance up to date. Defective engine manufactures and sold by Dodge. No recourse given to the thousands of people who bought this vehicle and had the same exact defect. Repairs estimated at $3000-6000. This car was driven without incident the day and night before. Then the next day upon leaving for work in the morning it completely failed and had to be towed. The mechanic stated loose parts in the engine caused by overconsumption of oil and sludge. How the heck can a car company get away with this. I still owe money on it and cant afford to fix it.

No guarantees replacement engine will not have same problem.

The Dodge Durango in question was parked on Friday Feb 25, 2011 and was running perfect. It was not missing or knocking. On Tuesday, March 1, 2011 we cranked the Durango and it immediately began knocking extremely bad. Took the Durango to a mechanic and was informed that the heads were ruined and the block was busted from a piston rod bending. Engine cannot be repaired. The Durango is in perfect shape otherwise and with only 83465 miles I expected more for the amount of money this vehicle cost.

I have a 2004 Dodge Durango with the 5.7 hemi engine with only 78,000 mile, the car was running fine one day. Very quiet and smooth. I went to start it a day or two later, and there was a clanking sound out of the engine, very loud, I thought it might be bad gas, after letting it run a bit, all of a sudden the noise stopped.but now there's heavy blue smoke pouring out the tail pipe. Being a retired mechanic I know this is a very bad oil issue. I have been reading online other people having trouble with this 5.7 engine. I can only imagine what could happen at highway speeds with this engine self destructing.

Drove the vehicle home from work and parked it in my driveway with no indication of any problems whatsoever. When I went out to start it the next day it would not start. Sounded like a dead battery or possibly the starter frozen up (rapid clicking noise) after trying to jump start the engine, I had it towed to the shop where they showed me a gaping hole in the side of the engine where it had thrown a rod. They could not tell me what had caused the failure without tearing apart the engine and costing a lot more money, but engine was trash at that point and no need spending more money on trash.

In July and August of 2010 I experienced several occasions of stalling and hesitation, many times while traveling at highway speeds of 65 miles per hour as well as 30 miles per hour in local traffic. Vehicle has stalled with no power in traffic. Several times this has occurred during raining and sunny conditions. Various times check engine light has come on and vehicle was taken to dealership for service and keep for days. Chrysler dealership charged for sensor replacements and complete tune-up of plugs wires, adjustments, etc. This all happened in the summer of 2010. The vehicle had been allow to sit in our driveway for several weeks to cut down on driving it due to the performance issues and trips to the dealership. On November 25, 2010, thanksgiving day, I when out to start the vehicle and a loud thumping noise came from the engine without any previous warning of this type of problem. My neighbor told me that it sounds like a blown piston or rod in the engine. I have then found many similar incidents and complaints on the website describing this same dangerous and defective vehicle and engine as mine. Someone will be seriously injured or killed if Chrysler is not forced to replace or repair these defective engines. If this were Toyota, you would have no problem taking action against the manufacturer. You must do the same thing against Chrysler who has given the public a bad and defective product with an extremely high cost to repair and should not be shifted to the consumer while the company is provided the ability and protection to ignore their responsibility. Please do your job as the american public depends on you for justice and recompense on products that are inferior and unsafe. Please take action for recall and replacement and/or repair of all 2004 and later 5.7 hemi engines right away. There are more than sufficient cases and reports as I found out that I am not alone.

The vehicle dies when I decelerate or turning in to my driveway. The vehicle has also died driving down the highway at 40 or 50 mph. I have felt the vehicle cutting out as I'm driving on the highway at 60 mph. When stopped at a stop light, it feels like it is going to die, and I have to give it some gas with the accelerator pedal so it won't die. Recently, it died as I was turning in the driveway at work, and it took six times of trying to start it before it would start again.

Purchased new 2004 Durango limited 5.7 hemi: After 3 1/2 years and the warranty expiration, when driving in city traffic or highway and it starts raining the engine starts to hesitate violently, to the point it will stop. This occurs if the SUV is parked in the rain and the engine is started. I have to wait for a few minutes then the engine will start, but have another heart attack as I drive down the road.. I have had fuse panel, engine wiring, ECM checked and no one can find any problems? the engine recently started missing and my scanner showed P0308 : I removed the spark plug, checked the coil, wiring, injector, spark plug..all ok and erased the code: The engine has about 79,000 miles on it and is properly maintained and garaged at night.. a stalling engine in inclement weather is a very very dangerous thing that Dodge/Chrysler seems to be ignoring..the fact is evident that there are hundreds of Dodge customers with the same dangerous problem I feel we should not be partners to Dodge/Chrysler's defective dangerous vehicles and intervention by our federal government based on the number of complaints should be implemented immediately.

I own a 2004 Dodge Durango slt 5.7 hemi, under heavy rain, engines starts to misfire. It has been over 2yrs with this issue. This happens only under heavy rain. Water is apparently touching a coil or cable which makes the car shake as if it wants to cut off, if under extreme rain engine light turns off. It is horrible. I have not found a remedy for this and I find no recall as yet. I have taken to the dealer and complained but they cannot find anything. When I did a tune up Feb 2010 at the dealer, mechanic mentioned that he found the coil moist, which was odd. But this is a problem as I cannot drive the car under heavy rain conditions. Im afraid of getting stuck in the rain or engine going bad if I don't fix this.
