Spits back fuel after refueling. Possibility of fire hazard.

I am having an issue with the fuel tank when I am filling up the truck, when fueling, the pump handle will click off and then fuel will shoot out of the fuel tank all over the place. I have never seen or experienced this issue ever before and it is quite alarming when you gas up and end up covered in gasoline not to mention the fact I am spilling gasoline all over at the pump, I feel this is a liability because of fuel spills and the fact it could potentially start a fire. I have seen several recalls on this issue and also several reviews as to Chrysler/Dodge not helping to repair the problem, this is why I was told to start here with a formal complaint.

I have seen lots of complaints about this same issue online as well as 2 open and closed investigations on this website! while driving my 2005 Dodge Durango it will shut off on its own, steering is impossible at this point. It use to happen a lot to me. Normally it would always happen pulling in or backing out of my driveway. But I live in rural wv and we have mountains and curvy roads. Once I was driving about 30-35 mph and I was on a curvy road and it stalled out on me and I about went over the mountain as I could not steer! we had the vehicle checked over and there was no warning our check engine light on. Ultimately have the mechanic played the guessing game, he replaced the egr valve and that had fixed the problem. Just recently it is beginning to happen again. This investigation needs to be reopened! manufacturer should be responsible. My Durango has 3 very common issues with lots of other folks that should be recalled: 1. the stalling of the vehicle for no apparent reason. 2. the fuel leaking out as you are filling it was gas! they say my car is not part of the recall and will not pay to fix it. 3. 4 lock kicks in on its own as you are driving. This is very dangerous! they need to investigate and solve the problem and recall. I love my Durango and I have had it for 6 years as I bought it used and I am the second owner. I would love for Dodge to make this right. As I do not want to get another vehicle.

Whenever I fill up my gas tank gas pours out. I try to listen real close so it doesn't happen and then sometimes even as I am taking the pump out a bunch of gas will come back out of it. This has been going on for a very long time. I even had a gas attendant try to tell me I would have to pay for the clean up. I seen were there was a recall on this and I called the manufacturer and they told me my vehicle was not part of the recall. Evidently there are other 05 Dodge Durangos having the same problem.

When filling the tank with gasoline, the pump handle will shut down but gas spews from the filler opening on the vehicle. There is an existing recall for this problem issued in 2009; however, my particular VIN is not covered under that recall even though I am having the exact same problem. Perhaps a fire causing injuries is necessary to have this problem covered by Chrysler.

Every time I fill up the vehicle with fuel it sprays gasoline out all over the side of the vehicle as well as whoever is fueling it. Several like model Durangos from this year and close to the same year have had recalls to fix this issue. Im not at all sure why my VIN does not qualify for the recall but it needs to because the problem is obvious and was definitely a manufacturer error. Please consider this request and take care of the issue.

The first time it happened, the transfer case went into neutral, on it's own, while driving on a divided highway, with no shoulder. It kind of created a traffic jam. Long story short. A friend towed me home. I reset the transfer case per the instruction manual, and it went back into gear. Still do not know why it went into neutral in the first place. Now, when you open the doors, the transfer case motor operates like crazy, for up to 30 seconds, and some times longer. I got on line and have found out that is a problem experienced by many Durango AWD owners. I bought it used and the previous owners claimed that it never did it before. Also, when filling the tank up, the filler neck will "purge" fuel out onto the ground and your feet. This is listed as a dealer recall, and mine was looks to have been done, but the problem is still there.

The contact stated that after refueling, the instrument panel erroneously displayed that the fuel tank was full.the vehicle was towed to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump module needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 05V034000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred on three occasions. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000 and the current mileage was 202,000.

Upon filling up at the gas station, when the pump shut off, there was an overflow from the gas tank. About the same time, I had to replace the tires and was told the car needed to have the ball joints replaced and there was a recall out for the job. However, I was told my VIN number did not qualify. We were filling the fuel tank at a gas station, after the tank was filled it sprayed fuel on my wife. I have investigated this issue online and found this recall. I will also contact Dodge, but I also have read a few instances where they are resistant to this safety issue so I decided to also report it here.

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while refueling, gasoline spewed from the filler neck without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was advised to the contact that the fuel tank would possibly need to be replaced but a diagnosis was required. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 09V003000 (fuel system, gasoline) in 2005. The vehicle was not repaired for the recent failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 99,000....updated 04/25/13 the consumer stated dealer advised the manufacturer that the vehivcle had two leaks that were causing the failure. The dealer claimed the second leak was unrelated to the first leak. The consumer has a video clip of the failure. Updated 05/17/2013

The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 75,000.
