Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 61,000 miles
1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 6 cylinder engine failure at 61000 miles. No warning of approaching engine failure. Oil changed 1200 miles prior to incident. Car was found to have oil in pan with "sludge" at the bottom of the pan upon inspection after the incident. Vehicle never ran "hot." Upon consultation with local mechanics and the local Chrysler dealership this is a very common problem with the 2.7 engines in this series of Dodge Intrepid. Mechanics and engine builders have both advised that this engine has a fundamental design flaw in the oil distribution system throughout the engine, eventually leading to engine wear and eventual failure. Chrysler dealership (though unwilling to replace the engine at no cost) openly admits that there are serious issues with this engine. Chrysler must be held accountable for their poorly designed engine that is doomed for premature failure.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 74,850 miles
1999 Dodge Intrepid with 2.7L engine 74960 miles, oil changes every 3000 miles, and now the engine has to be replaced. Found websites with a lot of complaints about the same problem. There should be a recall. The dealer told me it would be $9000 to replace and install new engine, which is worth more than the car. Need money to fix. Car is going to sit until something is done. Don't let this happen to anyone else. Just search the internet and find how many people there is out there with the same problem. Thank you.

Intrepid 4WD 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 64,000 miles
I own a Dodge Intrepid that is only 4 years old and when driving down the road the engine ceased. I had it towed to a repair shop and called Chrysler who informed me the warranty expired, but with a fairy new car, I feel the engine should not have went. The only way they will talk to me about it is if I take it to a dealership at my expense and have it looked at. This is at a cost of $500 and they told me Chrysler most likely will not pay and that I would be out the money and have a basket full of parts. I feel the company should stand by their products and take some consideration of the customer. As I stated to them :they have my $22,000 and I have no working car to show for it. This car stopped at a busy intersection putting my daughter who was driving in serious jeopardy.

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 95,999 miles
While driving, my 99 Intrepid loss power and the engine started making a terrible knocking sound. The engine to my car has died at 95999 miles. It is a shame. I have alway been such a big fan of Chrysler. I was in the process of looking for a minivan to trade this car in for. Now I still owe more than $7000 on this car and stuck with it. I have no clue as to what I am going to do. I priced engines. They range from $3600-$4800 and that does not include labor. The worst part is I had my children in the car when it died. Luckily no one was hurt. Also the steering makes a funny knocking sound when I turn. I am no longer a Chrysler fan and will most likely never own another one.

Abnormal premature consumption of oil. First noticed around 40,000 miles and has steadily progressed to current 1 quart per 1,500 mile of oil consumption at 68,000 miles. Chrysler refused to correct the problem and indicates that it is normal for their engines to burn oil.

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 60,389 miles
1999 Dodge Intrepid, 5 star dealer maintained has experienced engine failure at 60389 miles. Have spoken with many others that have experienced this problem. According to an engine rebuild shop the failure is caused by poor design of the engine. Excessive sludge builds up and eventually starves the engine for oil resulting in bearing failure and/or broken connecting rods. Another engine rebuilding service claims that rebuilding is a waste of money and the rebuilt engine is doomed to failure.

I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid, 2.7 liter engine, 65000 miles on vehicle. The vehicle has been properly maintained. Timing belt broke on vehicle and it was towed to a Chrysler/Dodge dealer for repairs. Mechanic began to disassemble motor and found a black sludge inside engine - said it looked as if the motor oil had never been changed. This vehicle has been properly maintained. I was then informed the motor would need to be replaced. I have contacted several mechanics for repair estimates - which range from $4500-$7000. One person I spoke with said that a "jasper" replacement motor was available that has fixed the design problem with the oil. I am trying to find information regarding this motor. From the website I was reviewing, Intrepid.clan-510.org this sludge is a problem not typically encountered, but it seems to be more common with the Intrepid. Another motor replacement business, I contacted, said they were getting requests for the 2.7 liter motor every day and said repairs would be $7000. Do you have any information on problems associated with this motor" can you provide me with contact information"

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 87,000 miles
Complete engine failure at 75000 miles, oil light began to flash on and off engine started to knock loudly vehicle lost all speed and stalled on expressway entrance ramp. This vehicle's oil and filter was changed every 3000 miles yet when the engine was disassembled there was large amounts of sludge through out the it's inside, and I was told the engine needed to be rebuilt but this is a very expensive thing to do which the dealer told me would cost about $4000 this was the cheapest fix. Which I do not have the money to repair right now so now I am pay for a car I can not drive. And from all the information that I have read there seems to be a problem with a great many of the 2.7 liter V6 engines installed in this vehicle. The repairs are very costly and time consuming.

Engine blew for "no apparent reason". warranty will not cover a replacement due to the mysterious appearance of sludge. I had my oil changed regularly and maintained my vehicle properly. I have already replaced the transmission, various sensors and visited the dealer 3 times to correct an oil leak. I was never diagnosed with an engine problem until it finally shut down. While driving approximately 45 mph on the highway, the engine started to make a loud noise and rattled continuously. This was very surprising, considering the vehicle was normally a quiet ride. The shop told me my engine was blown and the warranty company denied my claim. I am still financing this vehicle and do not have the $6,500 to replace this engine. I see numerous complaints on this site and others about the 2.7 liter engines. There should definitely be a recall.

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 36,000 miles
I was the owner of a 1999 Dodge Intrepid, that was completely wrecked at 36,000 miles after experiencing sudden loss of steering control prior to the wreck, my dealer assured me over and over that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle although I was very concerned and pretended to know nothing about steering problems with these vehicles. Prior to the total vehicle loss, the engine blew up with a rod knock at about 33,000 miles and had to be replaced, the transmission had to be overhauled after it failed, the input and output speed sensors both failed and much more. This is just 1 of 2 defective daimler Chrysler vehicles I have owned and daimler Chrysler accepts no responsibility. Many of these vehicles are defective and do not hold up reasonably. I have never had any of these problems with a 15 year old vehicle with over 220,000 miles on it. I would like to inform consumers that my website against Chrysler for ongoing premature Dodge, Chrysler engine, steering, transmission failures and more is now www.daimlerchryslervehicleproblems.com. we have referred many to the NHTSA and we hope that the NHTSA will post this to refer others to our site who have not yet seen our site. At this website you will see accident pictures and complaints from consumers after sudden loss of steering control. We also have pictures of the common Chrysler engine internal oil sludge buildup and damage from timing chains that have broke through these engines after tensioner failures. We also have many premature transmission failure complaints. If you have evidence of these problems, pictures or a complaint to be posted please also visit www.daimlerchryslervehicleproblems.com and find out what DaimlerChrysler does not want you to know.
