Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 68,000 miles
Engine started making rattling noise while driving, pulled off road and shut off engine. I tried to restart and it wouldn't start again. I had it towed to my mechanic and was told the engine failure was due to sludge in the timing chain tensioner, and that the engine would have to be replaced. This engine was well maintained and had 68000 miles. No repairs have been done on it due the expense of a new engine.

My wife had just entered the highway when the engine suddenly stalled and our car had to be towed. The next day a mechanic told us that the engine was seized. The car only has 82,000 miles on it.the total cost of the repairs was $6442.91, the engine alone cost $4300 from jasper engines, which said that they have corrected the design flaws within the engine. If a popular and reputable engine rebuilder can find and fix the problem than why can't Chrysler.

Oil light flickered a couple of time at an idle. Called service at dealership and took it in for possible oil sensor replacement. Found out engine was damaged and needs replacing. Was offered 2 engines one at 60,000 mi the other at 100,00 mi. Refuesed both for fear of those going to. Warranty out of date at 100,00 miles. Vehicle now 114,00 mi and is a 1999. Oil was always changed every 4500 miles and mobile 1 synthetic was used. No warning of service engine soon light ever coming on. Oil was always up to full line on dipstick. I feel Chrysler should help me with the problem by helping me purchase a new engine or applying a deal for another car. My car is not that old and I feel it was not our fault that the engine went this soon. My dealer ship has always been great and up front with me on everything else and I know they are doing their best to help. I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with a 2.7L engine. I see others have had similar problems. I think there should be a massive recall on these engines and assistance for getting them fixed.

Intrepid 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 82,000 miles
We purchased the Intrepid with the 2.7L engine with 29,000 miles on it for approximately $13,000. March 18, 2004, with 82,000 miles on it, the engine failed. We purchased an extended warranty to cover these events, but it expired at 75,000 miles. For the past year, we have been making payments and paying full coverage insurance for this vehicle as it sits behind our house, not being driven. A quick search on any search engine, brings up hundreds, if not thousands, of cases of this particular car and engine failing at the 80,000 mile mark. Due to the nature and history of these engines, we are not able to find a used one to replace the failed engine in our car. We have had our names listed with dealers and salvage yards around the region since immediately following the engine failure. A new engine costs $5,000 to replace per estimates. The car is valued, with a working engine, at less than $4000. Replacement costs and the amount owing on the car, put us in a position that we have no options at this point other than to let it sit and pay it off.

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 103,615 miles
Car started shaking, I was told that it was something to do with my tires, so I bought a new tire. Shaking continued, until the day I took the car in where I bought it and I didn't see it again for 6 months. I was told by the used car dealership that there was metal shavings in my oil and that I would need a new engine. After many attempts to get a low priced engine, numerous (and failed) attempts at a loan to pay for it, one was found by the used car dealership from where the car was purchased. They quoted a price of $3500 but when we went in to pay the price had gone up to $4200. The salesman said that he must have told us the wrong price. Anyway, the car was repaired and back in the land of the driving in March '05. Would have had the car back sooner but the garage that was repairing it did some damage to my car. First, the original man who took my engine apart, who either quit or was fired, put numerous engine parts in numerous boxes and placed them in numerous places. The owner couldn't find all of the parts. Second, they broke my windshield and had to order a new one, wait for it to come in, and then wait for it to be installed.

Intrepid 6-cyl

I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid, which was purchased new by myself. Since I am the original owner I know how my car was treated. Basically, my car has 120,000 miles on it and has run pretty well all its life. The car started to jerk while accelerating on my way home. I took it to our Dodge dealer and was told that the engine was going to fail due to sludge in the engine. The dealer stated that this was a known problem and that chryler wouldnt do anything about it. They had gotten many complaints on these engines.

Intrepid 6-cyl

Like soooo many others my Dodge Intrepid 2.7L engine starting knocking, then while driving to work in the middle of the road stopped! my husband had to push the vehiclle off the road but was unable to completely get it out of an intersection alone! we had it towed to a Dodge dealership where they informed us that we needed a new engine. After I did some research and found that there are thousands of us out there with the same problem (sludge build up in the engine) that casues the engine to blow with no warning. No only a saftey hazard but it is very coslty to repair.the dealership wants 6500 to repair it and the car is not even worth that. So we are still paying on a car that dosen't run...because the engine is defective!
