Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 83,000 miles
My 1999 Dodge Intrepid's engine failed in November 2003 while driving on interstate 55. Quotes given to me to fix and/or replace the engine were in the range of $5500 - $8500. This is the 2.7 liter engine; at the time of the engine failure I owed over $6000 on the car, and I am still paying on the loan. The car has been sitting in my garage; this is a common problem with the 2.7 engines, however Chrysler will not take responsibility.

Complete engine failure due to oil sludge build up. I had my engine oil and filter changed every 5,000-7,000 miles. I had no prior problems with the car, until this incident. While getting on the interstate I noticed my engine stuttered and almost died, I pulled over to the side of the road and heard that the engine was knocking excessively. At the time I had 4 kids from my son's baseball team in the car and I had to get them home. So I drove home slowly with the emergency flashers on. I spoke with several mechanics and they told me that the 2.7L engine is notorious for this failure. I had the engine replaced at a cost of $5,784.72. I'm still paying on the credit card bill and making car payments. Unfortunately I can never recoup my losses on this car.

We bought the car when it was two years old with 21,000 miles on it. From the minute we drove it home, the air wouldn't cool in the summer and the heat would go out in the winter. Every time we brought it in to be looked at, the dealer could not identify a problem with it. We've now owned the vehicle since fecurary 2002 and the idle was always a bit rough. We were told that, that was the way the engine was supposed to sound. A few weeks ago the valves started clattering. We changed the oil twice after being told that, that would rectify the issue and it didn't. on 8/7/2004 we were on the road the engine started clattering really loud, we pulled off and had our oil changed professionally this time. After getting back on the road the idle seemed better but the clattering got worse and was followed by an additional noise. Shortly after the engine made a loud noise and seized. The car is a 1999 with 72,000 miles on it and the engine is blown, there is something seriously wrong with this picture!

I purchased a 1999 Dodge interpid on April 11, 2003, after having it for 25 days, the transmission went. Was repaired. In the shop for 2 weeks. After having it for 9 days, a loud noise in engine was noticed. It was not drove, but went into the shop again and is currently there. The engine has gone. Repair shop called Chrysler company and they said to replace it. Our extended warranty company wants me to authorize repairs and will decide what percentage they will pay for it. But the policy we have states engine repairs and replacement., according to their booklet. The cost to replace it, $8,300! that is more than what we paid for the car. This car has been driveable for 25 days before first breakdown with transmission job, undriveable and in the shop for 14 days, out for 9 days and is now in the shop awaiting a new engine. I have read on the internet about other 1999 Dodge interpid owners who are having the same troubles as I am with their cars. Please help this engine is ruinned! needs to be replaces, 2.7L, V-6..

History includes blown transmission sensor, failure on the very first year inspection for brake rotors, driver's side window sticks in up position, intermittent heat control button not functioning properly, noisy when turning in front strut area, keyless remote does not function properly and now the worst of it. One month ago, took car in with oil and engine lights flashing, ticking noise from engine, stalling out. Dealer did electronic sensors repairs and tune up costing $500. One month later, car had to be towed back to dealer with loud banging in engine. Repair bill of over $6,000 to fix a car I've owned 3 years, 8 months and 60,000 miles. 2.7 L engines are blowing in these cars all the time making it next to impossible to purchase a used one to do repairs myself. One used car parts place said they have a waiting list. Recall anyone"?"!!

I am in sales and drive extensively. Because of this I am very carefull to change my oil every 3000 miles. I currently have 91000 miles on my car, it is due for an oil change in roughly 700 miles. While driving I noticed a faint ticking sound and about two minutes later T got very loud. I pulled the car over and it shut off. The car did not overheat, the oil light never came on. I had a recomendation to a good mechanic who towed it and found that the engine had less than a quart of oil in it. There were no leaks, and it has never smoked. It has also never heated up. My engine is out of warranty, but I have been told by my oil change guy, who has also inspected the vehicle, that Dodge is having a lot of problems with the 2.7L motor. A local dealer told him this. At any rate, I have a blown motor on a car that is 3 years old, and apparently no recourse. Please help me if you can.

While driving vehicle, heard a noise coming from engine, then vehicle stalled out. Took to dealership and engine was gone. Consumer adds the failure of the rod bearings sending metal throughout engine scaring camshaft, pistons and cylinder walls in engine block. Dealer replaced camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor to restart engine. However, engine is still noisy. Dealer checked valve covers and intake removed for noise. Found metal adhered to valve covers, but no visual problems with heads or valves.
