Here I sit thinking maybe it was just me! After going to the dealer
they told me that this motor was a very good motor and that they
only had a few that had this problem. After talking to my repair
shop he told me that this is common in these motors. I wish I had found this web site sooner. Never again will I buy a dodge product.
So I join all of the rest of you poor bastards. And dodge doesn't
seem to be a bit concerned about it.

I do not understand if dodge knew of this problem the did not try to make it right. This intrepid was my wife's car which she is a full time student and has to have a car. I work full time. I guess dodge doesn't care if they screw people just trying to make it. I am never going to buy a dodge product again!!!!!!!!!! It would be one thing if they would stand behind the engine and make it right......guess they don't care. I have nothing more

I am very disappointed in Chrysler, as they were aware the engine was defective and took no steps to correct.
It is unfortunate that the consumer can not count on US car manufacturers to stand behind their product from start to finish.
I am investigating my rights in this situation and will do anything possible to get this issue resolved. I have purchased Chrysler products in the past, plus I have family members who work at Chrysler.
As a tire supplier for Chrysler, I will be very happy to share my dissatisfaction with others.
I hope this can be resolved.

My sons car with 71000 miles was running fine when all of a sudden it started knocking loudly. It especially got loud afted he changed the oil and filter. He was afraid to drive it so I had it towed to a mechanic. After a day looking into the engine he determined it needed a new engine. After reviewing many articles about the problem with this engine I tried to contact Chrysler. Their only response was the it was out of warranty. I can't imagine any car company knowing that the engine had a design flaw would expect the consumer to just accept the additional $6,000 expense and possible return at a later date and buy another Dodge. This is outragous and something needs to be done

Intrepid SE 2.7L, Automatic transmission, 98,000 miles
Bought a beautiful 1999 Dodge Intrepid from a very reputable dealer. I immediately began having problems, like "sensors" needing to be replaced but I thought, eh, at $5,000 I stole this car. After only 2 months of driving the engine seized up while I was in traffic! I was almost rear ended by a car behind me as I crossed an intersection. I had driven this car only about 3000 miles when it locked up on me. During that time I had changed the oil once just like I was supposed to. I did not drive this car hard, I am a very safe driver. After having the car towed at my expense to a mechanic, After running a typical spark, fuel and compressopn test, I was told by the mechanic that he had to tear the engine completely down to find the problem. After two days the mechanic called and said that the engine was blown, a piston was seized and the excaust valves were burnt. So I paid $5000 to Ryan's engine exchange in Colorado Springs to get a remanufctured engine, all at my own expense. I bought the new engine in March of 2003, it is now September 2007 and my car just stopped running again! I took it to a mechanic and he says that the cylinder has lost compression and that it is leaking air from a leak test into the intake manifold. Bottom line, I need a new engine again! This on a engine that only has 54000 miles on it and which the oil has been changed and maintenance performed religiously by the dealer. I am a single mother of one with one on the way and have no car to drive to work and may lose my job!

I am a college student that commutes to school daily which racks up about 600 miles a week, so i wasnt able to drive my truck (which is a 1991 4 wheel drive, v8 Ram). So i found a car lot locally that had several used Dodge Intrepids and Concordes. Since i am a Doge man any ways, and these cars were priced well, with good gas mileage i purchased a 99 2.7 liter Intrepid for $3,500. 3 weeks later while driving i experienced a knocking in the engine and had to have it towed home. the engine is blown, and the crooked car lot refused to help in any way. I wish i had taken some sort of legal action or something but didnt. I now have a 3500 dollar lawn ornament. I have been told a used 3.2L can be converted into these cars for a decent price but I'm strapped as it is and am now back in college. I am a Die Hard Dodge Fanatic but this is B.S.

My oil light started coming on with no lack of oil. Well then my engine stopped working basically, and when i got an estimate they said my engine was starved of oil and that i needed a whole new engine, approx. 4500.... that was my only car at the time and not paid off yet. So I had to pay on a car I couldnt drive for a year.
- kbrown, Midland, MI, US
Engine failed. 75k miles, oil light never came on. $4500 to fix, not much more really needs to be said. I hope the car lives a long and healthy life as a lawn mower.

Bought a beautiful 1999 White Dodge Intrepid from a very reputable dealer. In fact, it had been his daughter's car for driving back and forth from the Ms. Coast to LSU, so Daddy had added lots of extras. I immediately began having problems, like "sensors" needing to be replaced but I thought, eh, at $4,000 I stole this car. Well, I drove it for 7 months, then came the knocking. I'd already invested about $800 extra dollars on sensors, here came the knocking. Took it to a friend and he said "it's about to sling a rod". He had to tear the engine completely down to find the problem. He said about $4600 to rebuild or try to buy one, but it would likely succumb to the same fate... Sad thing is, because of Hurricane Katrina, before the engine started knocking we had taken out a $5,000 loan from my workplace's credit union, so I have been paying a 2 1/2 year loan back on a car that's rotting in my front yard. 6 more months to go and I may be able to afford another used car from A DIFFERENT REPUTABLE DEALER!!! Ugh! I grew up in a Ford family and I'll NEVER buy another Dodge in my lifetime.

This car was supposed to be for my son. The dealership would not put his name on the loan so I signed for him. Within 6 months the engine blew. After being told that it probably would not be covered under the extended warranty if sludge was found in the engine I really started to worry. I had to come up with records proving that the car had been serviced regularly or it wouid not be taken care of under the warranty. I always service my own cars, I used to be a certified automotive tech, so they were being very vague on whether they would take my oil and filter purchases as proof. Finally I had to pay $1000.00 to have them begin work to just check the problem with the engine. After a week and the total teardown of the engine while someone took photos of the internal mechanics the dealership and Chrysler decided that there was no sludge in the engine. I got my money back minus the $150.00 deductible and a supposedly known good used 2.7L V6. Another few days and we had the car back. Here it is 2-1/2 years later and the 2nd engine blew on the 4th of July, 2007. I got about 5 miles from home, the check engine light came on, I turned around and the engine started knocking on the way back home. Not wanting to walk or spend the money on a tow, I limped the car back home where it still sits in my driveway. That is where it died and has not started since. I am going to push Chrysler into taking care of this. We still owe almost $6,000.00 on the car. It will cost at least $6,000.00 to have yet another engine put in this car. I have no way of coming up with the money to pay for another engine. I believe Chrysler needs to make this problem good. Not another 2.7L but an upgrade so as to not have this problem again. There is definately a design problem with this engine and Chrysler needs to take care of their customers. I have had many Chrysler products in the past. 1968 Dodge Coronet 500, 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner, 1970 Dodge Challenger, 1984 Dodge Daytona Turbo and now this pig. I was considering trading this Intrepid in on the new Dodge Challenger but if I get screwed on this car I will never buy another Chrysler product again. I will never recomend another Chrysler product to anyone either.

I had this problem in 2005 after putting about 30,000 miles on the car. For a few months it sat in the garage collecting dust as it would still run, though the engine would knock. My dad and I did some research and found the oil sludge problem and then also searched for others having this problem. We eventually got involved in a class action lawsuit against Daimler/Chrysler which ended in them paying off the remainder of the car. We eventually donated the car to charity but I would highly suggest going the same line as I did and joining a class action lawsuit.

I bought this car used with 97,000 miles on it. Until the present, I've sunk at least another 3 thousand or so dollars into maintaining it. Then while I was driving home from work on the highway one afternoon, the engine started knocking really loudly. I had to drive about 20 miles an hour ON THE HIGHWAY in the right lane with blinkers on. Needless to say that was a very dangerous position to be in as the law states you have to do a minimum of 45mph on the highway. Upon entering the town where I live, I slowed to stop for a red light and the engine shut down. Luckily I was in the turning lane, but I had to push the car across 3 lanes of oncoming traffic which was coming around a blind curve to get my car onto a side street. I was kind of afraid for my life there for a few moments. Dodge has put all of our lives at risk with these breakdowns and should be ashamed. They should replace these engines free of charge with ones that are designed to LAST, but that's like saying all politicians should be honest. I got AAA to tow my car to my house. I've had quotes of anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000 dollars to replace the engine. I'm ready to scrap the car and NEVER buy another Mopar product again. After all these years, you'd think they'd know how to build a car properly for the American public. No wonder the Japanese are leading the way in cars. I will now buy only Japanese cars, thanks to American auto makers. Dodge can go out of business as far as I'm concerned.

I bought the intrepid cuz of ride, looks and price. The car had 108,000 miles on it when the motor went. It took me 6 mos. and $5,100 later to put a new motor in it. Then, every time I turned around, it was dollaring me to death. My mechanic would cringe every time I walked in to tell him about the new problem. I will never, ever, ever buy a dodge again. I let a friend borrow it and the accelerator stuck and he hit a sign and totaled the car. That is the best thing even though I still owe and the insurance co. didn't give me enough money to cover it. I went out and bought a pontiac grand prix and bought the over extended warranty to go with it. I am glad the POS is out of my life!!!

If anyone is in need of an engine repair, don't get ripped off any further, sure chrysler has taken you for a ride, but the repair shop shouldn't jump on board because of your misfortune. If you are anywhere near Tampa Florida, let me repair your car cheap and at least make it worth something to re-sell. consiglio777@yahoo.com

Manufacturers should be responsible for the quality of their products. Not take unsuspecting consumers for granted who have nothing to go back on or no one to go back to. Everyone makes money off of the car deal at the cost of the consumer.
Being a single parent, my first attempt at purchasing a vechicle in order to provide for my child - make a living and pay the bills. Now because of this engine failure it looks like I'll have two car payments and one car! Or worse yet not able to afford both! And one wonders why our economy is in the state it is in!
It sickens me to think about the annual bonsuses upper level Chrysler executives receive all for putting out poor products or just plain greed!

Was 226 miles from home and the timing chain broke on my wife leaving her to wait for 2 hours for me to get there and pick her up.. not to mention the cost of towing the junk to the garage where it still sits.. because the timing chain broke and took out the valves, oh and on top of this had extended warranty through Fidelity Warranty another joke because somewhere in the small print it said does not cover engine sludge. The oil was changed every 3000 miles.. A piece of junk.

I was first leasing my Intrepid then I purchased it and bought a warranty. I was driving home from a weekend at my brothers house a few sundays ago when on the freeway my car heaved and spurted then all of a sudden died. I had it towed to the nearest Dodge dealer and being a Sunday they were not open so I left the keys in a drop box with a description of what hapenned. Monday they called me telling me they will check it out. Tuesday they called me saying it was the cam and crank sensor, and I could pick it up on thursday. I picked it up and I was 23 miles away from the dealer and all of a sudden it died again. I had it towed back and the service man said the engine was seized. They told me I had to have all my service records. I could not find much but I know I had the oil changed regularly. They said they would have to have the warrantys inspector take a look at it, to see if it was covered. and if it wasnt I would be responsible for the 1500 dollar charge to tear down the engine they called me about a week and a half later saying that the inspector denied my claim saying it was caused by excessive sludge, it would cost 7000 dollars to repair. Needless to say I did not want to put that money into a car that is not even worth 7000 dollars, the dealer was more than willing to "help" me get into another car. I still owed 6500 dollars in the car and they traded the Intrepid in at 1000 dollars. The stereo I had installed was easily worth more than that. Last october the struts and all tires were changed as well as the battery and starter. Thank you POWER DODGE of Ontario.
Im sure they had to know of any problems, yet they released my car for it to only make it 23 miles down the road! Any Lawyers out there?????

This was the end result of my other complaints. The oil light flickering, losing oil, and now loss of the engine. I can't wait to dump this car. Hopefully, it will just sit on a dealer's lot and not get sold again. I would hate for someone else to buy this piece of crap car and endure all of this misfortune who could least afford it. I have already written to one of our local tv stations about the problems with this car. I hope they investigate. I won't hold my breath waiting for that though. The mechanic told me he put a "brand spanking new" engine in my car and when I looked on the bill it said "re-manufactured" I guess because I am a woman, he doesn't think I know the difference. I got the car back on Friday and it sounds like a piece of crap. I need to unload it before that "brand new engine" goes to hell in a hand basket. I'm sure it didn't sound like this new. Who would have bought it if it did? This car sounds like it is coming apart already. Hopefully it will last a couple of months longer and I can trade it in on something else.

we were on our way to take my daughter home, whom lives 40 miles away. the whole family was in the car when all of a sudden the engine starts knocking very loudly. we decide that it is best to get off the interstate. about 5 miles off the exit we have to stop at a red light at a busy intersection and the motor dies. we manage to get it started agin to just go around the corner and get off the road. we have no phones, no way to call for help. the whole family is in the car, STRANDED!!! my gf walks to the nearest place and has to ask to use the phone to call for help. And mind you that this is on a sunday, not much help out there. she gets her parents to drive down to pick us up, which they had to drive at least 50 miles down to get us then drive about 30 miles for them to return home, which we live way out of their way. How EMBARRASSING!!! I am very big on dodge, but after this. i am still paying 400 to 500 dollars a month car payment while my car sits at the garage waiting for dodge to decide what they are going to do about it. Thanks alot!!!!my cousin is a huge dodge man, trucks anyway, and has his own repair shop, when talking to him i find out that i can't put a different motor in the car without changing the brain and computer and all. Not at all happy about this!!!
