Engine blew due to a design flaw. Dealership where I bought the car 25 days ago is looking into different options. A car with only 119000 kms should not have this problem. There is a design flaw with this engine with which many people have registered or complained about, yet Daimler Chrysler refuses to acknowlege the flaw and compensate appropriately.

As with all of the other complaints on this page, I had the same problem. Used synthetic oil; changed every 3000 miles, did not drive the car hard and the 2.7 puked around 32000 miles. I do have instructions on how to replace the engine with a 3.2L, which did not have issues. I found a 3.2L in a local salvage yard that was in a wrecked Stratus for $1000 and had my mechanic swap it for $500. This was 4 years ago and it is still on the road today.
I have posted the instructions at http://userpages.bright.net/~tmneu/Dodge/dodge.htm . If you want to save your Intrepid; print them off and talk to your mechanic. Good Luck. As with most people, this will be my last Chrysler I ever own.

To make it short I had the same Experience as everybody else. Just a living nightmare with Dodge and the replacement of the new motor. The replacement motor is not running right either. Driving along the highway at about 2500RPM suddenly the motor starts bucking like crazy. This is about the 8th time I have to take off from work for this crap. It happens again this week. My wife went straight to Toyota and got a new Van.
That is what happens when people piss me off; I will never deal with them again. Goodbye Dodge...go under!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I purchased a 2000 Dodge Intrepid, 2 years ago, finished paying for it approx. 3 months ago. It cut off in the middle of the highway, it managed to drift to the side of the road, I had to call for help. I was approx. 6 miles from home, so I had it towed to my house. Husband changed, the battery after 2 hours, of taking the tire off and removing the guard, because battery is located under passenger side tire. That was not the problem, next he removed starter, had it tested, that was not the problem, so he put the starter back on the car. We had it towed, again to a shop, just to find out that the motor is locked up. I started reading complaints about the 2.7 engine, how can so many people have problems with this engine, and it not be recalled. This really sucks, I just got a promotion and started a new job, I live where you have to have a car to get anywhere. Will not purchase another Dodge.

After replacing this engine once the same thing happen again I will never own another Dodge they do not stand behind there cars,at least not the Intrepid with the 2.7 engine

I'm sick about this! My husband and I bought this car 3 months ago to use as his commuter car. It had just under 60,000 miles on it and had all the service records showing the upkeep of the car. We have been driving for the last 3 months with no problems and with no warning while driving down the road the engine just blew. Opened the hood to find everything shredded! Had it towed to our mechanic and was told it would cost more then the car is worth to fix it. Beautiful car, great condition, heading to the dump...it's disgusting! Not to mention that we spent all our money on that car and now we have to buy something again!

Bought my 2000 Intrepid 4 years ago with very low miles from an older woman that hardly drove. I used 100% pure synthetic motor oil and changed it every 3 to 4000 miles religiously. I had the spark plugs and boots changed 3 times since I've have it.
The oil light started flickering shortly after I bought it and the warranty ran out. Nobody could find the problem. I drove the car for about 3+ years more and the engine started knocking and blowing smoke. Mechanics stated there was nothing they could do except replace the engine or rebuild it. About 4 moths after that the engine blew up, the rods bearings, and rings are all toast.
I absolutely loved this car until all the problems. It had power, good on gas, great room for family, comfortable for those long drives, etc.
I took great care of this car because I need reliable transportation. There is no reason why my car should of been having these problems.
I'm going to be replacing the 2.7 with a 3.5 to be rid of these problems the 2.7 has (look it up on Google).
Chrysler corporation is wrong as a heart attack. The engineers that made this engine got their education out of a cracker jack box. It is no surprise the American car companies are going bankrupt.
I had a BMW with over 300K on it and it was still running strong. What does that tell you?
The federal government don't need to bail out these companies they need to make them more accountable for their actions.

I purchased this car from Enterprise Rental cars. I wish I would have known about AutoBeef before I bought it!!! What makes me mad is that Enterprise knew they were selling me a lemon, but did nothing about it. I heard there's a class action suit out against Diamler/Chrystler. I really wish I could be compensated for the huge headache!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR IT IS A TOTAL PIECE OF CRAP!!! My mother in law bought this car from a private dealer( who knew that they were crap but didn't tell her) and 3 days later the engine starts knocking so badly that it sounds like someone was under the hood with a jackhammer. Now she's stuck with the car because she bought it "AS IS". DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!!

I purchase a very nice looking car and thought with low miles I could drive it for few more years.... never before heard of any engine issues.
A day after it was purchased, the engine went..... I have not gave up until today in terms of fixing it...but why fix when it will happen again.
To make matter worst in terms of Dodge not helping the American people with these defected Engines, the cost to replace them often cost more the car worth and again no one is sure the replaced engine is any good.
We all have to continue fighting DODGE and hope we could turn them in for few dollars or better have them fixed.,..

I bought this 2000 Dodge Intrepid, V-6, 2.7 Liter engine, new from a dealer in December, 1999. In 2003, with less than 40,000 miles on it, the engine seized up. The Dealer contacted Chrysler, and the engine was replaced as if it had been under extended warranty. Interestingly, the dealership found no indication of excessive sludge buildup, which apparently is the basis of most complaints about this engine. I paid about $200, and was satisfied at that point. Since then, I've had lots of (relatively minor) repairs done on this car, and I would rate it below average for reliability. The car now has about 81,000 miles on it, which means the current engine has about 41,000 miles. The engine has failed again. The only warning was an intermittent (not consistent) clicking sound, which my mechanic felt was coming from the housing over the front part of the engine (where the timing gear/belt is located). Thus far, Chrysler has not responded to my request for coverage as if it were under warranty. I have reviewed many of the on-line complaints about the 2.7 Liter engine; I have talked to at least three local (non-dealership) mechanics, each of whom was familiar with sudden catastrophic failures of the 2.7 engine, and one of whom said he personally knew of seven such failures in this local area. None of those independent mechanics would touch this repair job. This is probably an $8,000 repair job, if I choose to have it repaired. It makes no economic sense, when the trade-in value of the car is less than $2,000. Even if I replace the engine (again) I would not sell this car to another individual without describing the problems with the engine. I've read enough, and heard enough, to believe that Chrysler should be forced to initiate some sort of replacement and compensation program, at least for those of us who bought our vehicle new, have owned it continuously, have maintained it properly, have not abused it in any way, but can't afford to prosecute a lawsuit

We bought this Dodge Intrepid new. I have always used synthetic oil and I"ve changed the oil about every 5,000 miles. Lately whenever I checked the oil, it was down a quart or so and I had to top it off. There was never any leaking of oil from this car. However, the car didn't seem to have the power going up hills that it had when it was new. I figured oh well it' s getting older I'll just add a quart of oil every now and then.
My wife called me from the library the other night saying the car had stopped and that the engine had been very noisy before the car died.Several hours later I got the car running and drove it to my mechanics garage. The next day he called and said I needed a new motor. The best he could do was over $4000 to replace the engine with another 2.7L engine with less miles (43,000). The car is only worth 3-4 thousand. Also from what I,ve been reading about the 2.7L I'm afraid to replace my engine with another of the same, mavbe I'm lucky to have gotten to 90,000 miles.
I was pretty happy with this car until the engine just died. It still looks beautiful, and everything except the engine works pretty well on it. The car was not abused. We drove this car carefully. I expect to have to pay repairs at the age of this car but I didn't expect to have to throw the car out. I feel like someone stole $4,000 from me.
We currently are looking for a new car. We borrowed a 2000 Buick from my brother in law that has 140,000 miles on it (it's still running fine!) to look at cars. I also sold a 2000 Chevy Malibu to a friend of ours four years back. That car has 110,000 miles on it and it's still running well. We are looking for a Toyota. I can't bring myself to buy another Dodge
I'll probably go to the Dodge dealer and complain but from what I'm reading online They're not standing behind their product.

I have a 2000 intrepid and the 2.7 is the worst i have replaced the motor twice in this car. the window motors stop working there very easy to steal.the automaker should stop making that dumb ass motor.

Ditto on everything already listed. Wish I had checked this site before I purchased this good car..gone extremely bad. Just stopped. Engine gone. New engine ...not worth it since it will have the same problem.Arrrgh.

I purchased my 2000 Dodge Intrepid in July of 2007 I had my car serviced on schedule and in February I was driving back from our family vacation when my car cut off two times I pulled over and a police officer pulled in behind me and checked my engine he said the car looked to be maintained very well. I drove off and as I got down the street we heard a knocking sound I had to have my car towed to a repair shop were I was told my engine was gone. I almost lost my job at Goodyear because I had no way to work. I had just put 2300 dollar tires and rims on my car now it sits in my driveway while I walk and catch a cab everywhere I have to go,. I am pissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF JUNK!

I treated this car extremely good, oil changes every 2000 miles and the engine goes in one day with no warning of any kind. a stroke with no warnings and die and forgot about saying good bye. I think dodge should pay for this because obviously they made a mistake in this engines and the government should make them pay for this because dodge buyers are not rich people and we deserve a better product that could last more than 90000 or 100000.when oil changes and tune-ups are made on time there is no excuse for the engine to die with no warning.

Im a single dad and bought my 2000 intrepid because it accommodated me and my 3 kids.
The engine started ticking and then it got worse all fluid levels had been kept up on and finally one day it just stopped no power and quit running. I had to walk my kids to a restaurant that we were meeting friends at which it happen to be about 90 degrees but instead of enjoying my meal I had to hurry because I had to set up a tow truck to come get the car and ask my friends to bring my kids to the house. I love this car and now it collects dust cause I cant afford a engine to put in it and I had to buy a junk ford pick up that only has 3 seat belts and theres 4 of us the truck was really cheap and a friends dad sold it to me. Plus I was getting ready to move so losing my car that was paid for to buy a truck and moving expenses. It would be nice if dodge truly F#$ked up to correct it some how. Id hate to get rid of the car but a new engine is worth more than the car

The car ran like a top up til four months before it was due to be paid off. One morning I went to let it warm up cause it was winter and cold out, it started right up but idled rough. I thought it was because it was cold but when I hit the gas it sounded like a old beat up truck and it had no power. I tried to make it to work just five minutes away but did'nt even make it two blocks before it stopped and would'nt start. The shop I had it towed to showed me the sludge, the timing chain and frozen valves and said this motor has had it. That's when I found out about the 2.7L sludge problem. Can't get it fixed, can't get a new or used motor, can't trade it in, F@%K!!! And we know the Chrysler aint paying for all these bad engines, THEY DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY!
