My 2.7 Liter engine failed. All signs point to an oil sludge issue. There is no way that I will spend one penny to get this piece of junk fixed. I have since made a significant upgrade to a 1992 Volvo 940 GL.

Oil sludge build up in the engine. Caused the engine light to come on and eventually caused the car to blow. The transmission went down weeks prior to the engine blowing. The car is now parked and can not be drove. I will never buy a DODGE/Chrysler product again.

I purchase this car in 2003 with about 15,000 miles. A few months later (maybe less than a yr) I had problems with the engine and transmission. The dealer supposedly fixed it and told me they had to replace the engine, but only fixed the problem. A few days or weeks later it started acting up again. I ended up having to pay them 800 dollars. Now, since then I have had engine problems left and right, it has left me stranded with my children in the car. Today it is at the my mechanic's waiting for an engine, shaving in the oil (oil sludge). The engine is very expensive and restored engines don’t make me feel comfortable. From the day I bought it, it has smoked, overheated, turned off on the road, made knocking noises, and now I am stuck paying my monthly payments and trying to figure out how to get money for a new engine.

I was just informed that my 2002 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 liter engine has sludge build up. The engine will fail within 10,000 max. Will cost thousands to repair. No help from Dodge even though many many complaints have been received about this engine.

Well I have a 2002 Dodge Intrepid with only 120,000 miles, well I had. Everything was fine until my heater no longer got hot. My oil light flickered especially after getting off long drives. That happened for about a year, while mechanics told me that it was just the sending unit. Next my engine light came on, which was throwing an improper temperature code. In Sept. of this year I thought I would get down to the bottom of the temperature. situation. Well I took it in to get some leaks fixed, primarily the thermostat and hose running to upper intake system. That was $653.00, to turn around and find out the water pump needs to be fixed. Took it to the dealership that sold me the car and they said it needs a water pump. That was $1200 but before I had it fixed I asked them will my engine be ok? I read about the engines having problems with the sludge, they said yeah and cleaned the sludge out the oil pan and to covers. Then they said it was making a sound and they thought it was the starter. So after two weeks of not having my car, I said yes go ahead and replace it. That cost an extra $500 for them to install. 3 days later it was knocking when I started it up. 2 days later after that it was knocking not only when I started it but while I drove. Took back to the dealership for them to tell me I need a new engine. Oh yeah an extra $100 for towing. Now it sits in my yard.

Never will i buy a damn dodge intrepid and its gonna cost me over 3,000.00 dollars too fix i still have a car payment on this vehicle and am stuck with a car i cannot drive but will have too pay for so my credit doesn't get a repossession on it. Any help would be appreciated . or i either must put another motor in car myself , and thats looking like my only option cause who has 3-8 grand too pay with a damn car payment the way they charge for cars these days.

I purchased this car in August 2005. I've had problems ever since. I need a new engine, that costs a lot of money. I'm trying to make a car payment and to get this car fixed with a new engine.
- dobbsca, Riverside, CA, US
It all started with a blown thermostat overflow valve cover blowing off. The engine overheated and there is significant damage inside the engine. Coming to this site, I understand that I am completely screwed and should just let the car a) get torched b) get stolen or c) get repossessed.

I purchased this car a year ago. We had problems ever since. The first problem was overheating., brake goes out really easily, oil leaks. We took the car to one shop to put on machine to find out the problems, they reported the engine need to be replaced. We took to another shop we told it only needs a rebuilt motor. This has been a pain in the butt. We are behind in car payments due to car problems. We do not wish this dodge's problems on another person.

FIRST LET ME SAY I HAD 3 WONDERFUL YEARS WITH THIS CAR... I LOVED IT AND OFTEN TOOK RIDICULE FROM OTHERS THAT HATED DODGE. I STOOD UP FOR THEM... MAN HOW I WAS WRONG... MAN WHAT I FOOL I WAS FOR NOT LISTENING TO MY FRIENDS. IT STARTED WITH A FAINT KNOCK,,, SO I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHO TOLD ME IT WAS An OIL SLUDGE PROBLEM AND THAT THE TIMING CHAIN WAS CONTACTING THE CASE COVER. I HAD BOUGHT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY SO I WAS COUNTING MY BLESSINGS.. UNTIL HE ASKED ME TO PROVIDE EVERY RECEIPT OF EVERY OIL CHANGE I HAD... OH MY GOD I DIDNT KEEP THEM ALL.. NEVER THOUGHT I HAD TO. HE THEN TOLD ME THAT I WAS OUT OF LUCK AND THAT I HAD A REALLY BIG PROBLEM. $8,000 DOLLARS WORTH TO REPLACE THE ENGINE.
I STILL OWE $6,000 TO THE BANK... WHAT AM I TO DO... I CAN BARELY BUY MILK FOR THE KIDS.. PLEASE IS THERE ANY HELP OUT THERE? MY HEART IS BROKEN I CANT BELIEVE DODGE WOULD DO THIS TO ME, A LOYAL CUSTOMER. I WILL NEVER SPEND A CENT ON A DODGE AGAIN.. EVERYONE I TALK TO WILL HEAR OF MY PROBLEMS AND HOW I USED TO BE A DODGE FAN. I CANT BELIEVE THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING THERE IS ONLY 69000 MILES ON MY CAR, 2 YEARS LEFT ON MY LOAN. DODGE YOU SUCK.. YOUR CARS SUCK, WHAT KIND OF FOOLS DONT TAKE CARE OF A FAULTY PRODUCT. I HOPE YOUR COMPANY GOES UNDER. I WILL DO MY PART TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE I KNOW STAYS CLEAR OF THEM. OMG WHAT A HUGE LOAD OF CRAP I HAVE ON MY HANDS... THERE IS NO WAY OUT, NO CASH TO FIX AND NO PLACE TO PARK THIS DEAD PIECE OF S**T. I HATE YOU DODGE.
I WISH THERE WAS A WAY TO BREAK YOUR HEART AS YOU HAVE DONE TO ME AND MY FAMILY. THIS ALL HAPPENING 2 WEEKS BEFORE CHRISTMAS..
STAY AWAY FROM DODGE ... PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM DODGE.

I PURCHASE THE 2002 DODGE INTERPID WITH THE 2.7L ENGINE ON 28 AUG 2004. I FIRST ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM ON 17 SEPT, 2004 WHEN MY ENGINE OVERHEATED AND ALL THE ANTI-FREEZE POURED OUT FROM UNDER THE CAR. I TOOK THE INTREPID TO THE A LOCAL MECHANIC, WHERE I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A BAD THERMOSTAT. I PAID $350 FOR THE PART PLUS LABOR. THE INTREPID LAST ONE F-C-ING DAY, AND THE SAME PROBLEM CONTINUED. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THE MECHANIC NOR THE MANAGER WANTED TO HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE CAR, THEY GAVE ME THE RUN A ROUND UNTIL MY 30 DAY WARRANTY RAN OUT. SO I TOOK THE INTREPID TO THE DODGE DEALER TO GET IT PRESSURE TESTED. THAT WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT THE ENGINE BLOCK WAS CRACK AND FILLED WITH SLUGDE. HE ASKED HOW OFTEN DO I CHANGE MY FLUIDS, I TOLD HIM I JUST BOUGHT THE CAR THREE WEEKS AGO. SO, I ASKED HIM WHAT MIGHT HAVE CAUSED THE PROBLEM. THATS WHEN HE TOLD ME THAT THE 2.7L ENGINES HAVE A PROBLEM WITH DEXCOOL AND HE FOUND QUICK SEAL IN THE ENGINE. HE THEN SAID THAT IT WOULD COST $5600 TO REPLACE THE ENGINE. BUT IF I WAS HIM, HE WOULD NOT PUT A $5600 DOLLAR ENGINE IN A CAR THAT IS ONLY WORTH $2900 AND THE SAME THING WOULD HAPPEN TO THE NEW ENGINE. I LOST MY JOB CAUSE I WASNT ABLE TO GET TO WORK, NOW HAVE BAD CREDIT, BEING SUED BY THE LOAN COMPANY, AND HAD TO BUY A NEW VEHICLE. THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO PROTECT PEOPLE LIKE US THATS GETTING F*CKED IN THE SYSTEM!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND THIS NOT NO DAMN DEAR JOHN LETTER.

I'm thoroughly disapointed in this 2.7L engine, this engine is completely destroyed. When the mechanics took the heads off on the engine there was nothing but sludge over the top and internal parts of the engine. The shop that I have the car at said this is the fifth dodge that has been in their shop with the same problem. Not only do I still owe 2500 on this car but now I need to get the damn thing fixed for my wife to get to work. On top of all the other exspences that we have there is no room at all for an additional $4500 out of our budget. Dodge needs to be held responsible for this outrage that has affected not only my family but countless others also.(DON'T JUST READ THE COMPLAINTS ADD YOURS ALSO.) One year ago 2.7L engine parts were not as plentiful as they are now and thats only because these engines have not been holding up and are ending up in the junk yard. The more complaints that are listed, it may force Dodge to recall the 2.7L engine. This has been a major problem for some time and the customers that decided to buy a intrepid needs to have some type of compensation with there repair costs.

I have experienced the same thing that all other Intrepid owners are experiencing w/ 2.7 Oil Sludge, then sits in the drive.... ONE CHANCE AS WE GREW UP EVERYONE SAID DODGE WAS CRAP POINT PROVEN!!!!

In August 2005 I brought a 2002 dodge intrepid, the worst mistake in my life WHAT A FOOL the car was working good (maintenance, oil change, tune up etc.) Then 2 months after getting the car, the car's the engine light keep coming on, i didnt know anything about cars so i got it checked by the ford dealer where i got the car. They told me that it was a sensor and that they would reprogram it so it could go off. That worked FOR A WHILE, then 2 months ago in July of 2006 the light started to coming on again and going off once again. When i got it checked this time they told me it was a cam sensor so i got that fixed and not even one day after i got the car back, i heard a loud knocking noise WHAT THE HELL is what i said when they told me it was THE ENGINE and that I needed a new one (keep in mind I brought the car not even a year ago) now the ENGINE is gone I still owe 8,000 on the car with a 4,000 engine problem! I am so mad that I feel like pushing the car in to a river and be done with it IF YOU CAN AVOID A DODGE INTREPID ALL TOGETHER IT WILL SAVE YOU MONEY IN THE END !!!!!!!!!!!!!
- madashell, Glen Allen, VA, US
It started by the vehicle overheating and blowing the water connector apart, after replacing it the car overheated again now it is knocking and trashed. I believe the problem started because of an oil pump failure. What recourse do we have? I have read many complaints that sound the same as mine.

Just like many owners of the 2.7 Liter engines. Despite all the required maintenance on the Dodge Intrepid, my engine died due to oil sludge. This is a problem with so many owners of 2.7 engine that it is crazy.
I don't know if im going crazy but it seems as if Chysler pays more for a person to design their cars than actually paying someone to develop a better engine.
I can actually say that I will never purchase another Chysler in my life despite how good their cars look. If Chysler was so smart they would just recall the 2.7 engines and restore consumers confidence in their product.
I think every owner in every state should file a nationwide lawsuit against Chysler. They should not be able to get away with this. Im currently trying to work with our local news station to really publicize the problem with 2.7 engines and force Chrysler to recall their engines.

This car actually broke down one year ago and has been sitting ever since. We bought car used in 2003 and bought a extended warranty package. Car broke down in April 05, towed to the shop and the shop said that car engine is junk need a new engine, due to oil sludge buildup. We then called the warranty company and they came out and evaluated and said they would not cover this problem and its is clearly stated in the contract. They claim that this sludge problem was our fault because we did not follow basic maintenance requirement (i. e. oil change every 3000 miles). Which is pure BS, we could have changed the oil once a week and we still would have had a problem. So this car sits, we still owe money on this car and quite frankly it is not worth fixing.
Yesterday my wife and I were out running around, and we saw 6 vehicles broken down along side the highway, guess what car is was...... DODGE INTREPID. What does that tell you. Chrysler says that there is not a problem with Chrysler Dodge (i. e. 2.7 liter engine, Intrepid) thats BS out of the mouths of a bunch of lying crooks. I will never buy any Chrysler product again.

THIS IS FOR THE BIRDS THAT IN THIS DAY AND AGE THAT A COMPANY CAN BUILD THE 2.7L ENGINE FOR FIVE YEARS WITH A SLUDGE PROBLEM AND THAT A GOVERMENT AGENCY HAS NOT GOT INVOLVED. OR THAT THE NEWS AGENCIES HAVEN'T JUMPED ALL OVER THIS. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING INTO THE FACT THAT THE 2.7L HAS A PROBLEM AND FOUND THAT THE BEST YOU CAN GET FROM DODGE IS THAT YOU MUST NOT HAVE CHANGED THE OIL ENUFF. OR THAT YOU MUST HAVE BEEN USING MOBLE, PENZIOL, OR QUAKER STATE OIL. I WILL BE CONTACTING THIS OIL COMPANIES TO SEE IF THEY KNOW THAT THEY ARE BEING BLAMED FOR THE PROBLEM WITH THE 2.7L ENGINE. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IF THEY MIGHT WANT TO HELP IF FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN TO STOP DODGE FROM SLANDERING THEIR NAMES.

Hmm. My problem is that I was driving down the highway when my car died in the middle of the road. I pulled over to the side of the road, and could not get it to start again. When we looked under the hood, we found the housing of the timing chain was shattered. It looked like someone had punched through it from the inside out with a timing chain exposed. We had it towed to a Dodge Dealership, and they charged us to take apart the engine to figure out what went wrong and how much damage had been done. What they told us is that the timing chain broke and shredded multiple parts of the engine. We were told a number of things needed to be replaced, including tensioners, left head, right valve cover and gasket, timing chain, crank seal, and water pump. This all would add up to about $3082. Our other option was getting a whole new engine, which this dealership told us was not currently available. I have had this car for less than 3 months now, so I am still paying for it. I am a college student in nursing school. The program I am in is very intensive, so I have very little working time. I do not have this kind of money to get this problem fixed. As I said, I am still paying for this car, going to college, and on top of that I am getting married in December. I have no idea what I am going to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. This all has been a huge mess, and I am truly wishing I had never bought this car.
