While driving my vehicle the power steering system reverted to manual steering mode due to an electric power steering system fault related to the torque sensor. The loss of steering assist while driving required higher steering effort at lower speeds, which may increase the risk of an accident. I took it into a Ford dealer to run some diagnostics and they confirmed that it needs a new steering shaft torque sensor. There was a recall from Ford (14S05) for this exact issue that impacted more than 1 million vehicles in North America. I am told my vehicle is not part of this recall but if it is the same vehicle with the same exact issue, I don't understand how it is not covered by this recall.

The car was taken out of long term storage 18 months ago and all the recalls done. I have two safety issues. First of all twice, I have lost power steering control while driving on the 80 mph highway. All of a sudden I have to use my might to control the steering manually which catches you off guard and makes the steering wheel unexpectedly difficult to maneuver. The bozeman Ford dealership cannot find the issue. Second issue that just occurred and now getting worse each time I drive is the steering wheel column loudly shaking. This is getting worse and worse and began to occur whenever I was stopped. Now it seems to begin to shake while I'm starting to drive again after braking to a stop as well. It shakes so much and so loudly I'm afraid a crucial screw will pop out. I'm concerned with my safety as I've seen this happen to other owners of this car...but years ago. It's happening to me now because it was in storage. For 4 years. In case you were wondering, I had everything checked out on this car as soon as I took it out of storage. I do all the regular maintenance at Ford dealerships. I'm concerned this hasn't been recalled as I'm afraid these two events are related and lots of other 2008 Ford Escape owners are having the same issues. These events took place in 2019 and 2020. My steering is having issues with steering power stopping while driving. Secondly I now have a loud shaking steering wheel

I own a 2008 Ford Escape that has recently been diagnosed with a known recalled issue with the torque sensor. Error code B2278. It has caused the electric power steering assist to turn off. My vehicle currently has no power steering due to this issue that has already been recalled. My vehicle falls under the model and year that Ford recalled the part on, however the Ford Motor Company is claiming they have no responsibility in the repair or replacement of the part. Luckily I was at a slow speed when the power steering went out and did not cause an accident.

Ford previously issued recall 14S05 for electric power assist system issue with a first step "software update" for the pscm. My dealer performed this update even though no error codes were showing. Now the torque sensor is failing and Ford will not do anything to correct/assist with the issue. This is a known issue with this recall and Ford will not acknowlege. Just a generic, "take to a dealership for diagnosis and repair and keep receipts in case recall happens again.

2008 Escape XLT has electronic assisted steering - not hydraulic fluid. The power steering stopped working and now acts as manual steering which needs more muscle power. It is doable but more difficult when parking. Maybe a bad eas sensor as others report.

On 1/9/20 the car had its last dangerous malfunction of so many sense I purchased the vehicle from a dealership 10/18. The car was parked in a beach parking lot. As my son was getting ready to leave the parking lot he turned car on put car in drive slightly stepped on gas to begin pulling out and the car surged and accelerated full speed by itself. He lost all steering and had no breaks. He had absolutely no control of the vehicle. It went full speed into a parked car about 15 ft away! both cars were totaled. All 3 people involved were injured. There was 2 people in parked car and my son who was burrowing my car. Previous to this accident the Escape has had so many dangerous malfunctions. Some being total steering loss while I was driving 45mph.car was towed and fixed covered by factory recall. Another shock snapped and punctured my fuel tank. My mechanic said I dodged death by driving. He said car was a ticking bomb. Ive replaced 2 ABS sensors at different times because they failed and caused break pedel to vibrate and made it very hard to stop. Another wheel bearing and wheel compartment due to total rust and corrosion of under body. All these things happened in only a little over a year sense purchasing this vehicle from mid cape moters for 6000$ in October.
