I recently read in the papers about the new 'unofficial' recall that Ford will need to do to replace even more tires for Ford Explorer. I own an Explorer and my tires were not part of the recall from last August. However, after hearing that possibly more of the tires are affected. I contacted a Ford dealership and they explained that since there is no "official" recall they would change my tires for me but I was liable for the cost of mounting, balancing, and the cost for the 4 tires (plus spare) also. I find this ridiculous and I'm sure I am not the only one. I have checked my tires and although I am unsure of what I am looking for and do not consider myself qualified to say if the tires should be changed or not, I do have an uneasy feeling about driving on the tires I currently have. I do alot of traveling in my Explorer and do not want to be a part of the statistics on Ford's recall papers in the future. So, what are my next steps" I was asked to fill out this complaint form. So who can I contact to get the service I am entitiled to" I would appreciate any follow up that you can offer to me. I love my SUV but I always have an uneasy feeling about the tires I am riding on.

Drivers front tire developed a hairline crack between the sidewall and the bead, most of the way around the wheel. Obviously defective from new. Confirmed by tire dealer. Once removed also found similar cracks on the inside between the bead and sidewall. Had all4 tires replaced as a safety precaution. Have requested refund from Firestone. The recall must be stepped up to include vn tires. This could have caused a serious accident if not found and the tire blew. (dot number: Vnhl1py230 tiresize: P235/75R15)

My vehicle was delivered with Firestone Wilderness AT tires and I was advised that because they were not manufactured at Firestone's Decatur plant they are considered "safe". the recent govindjee report states that the Wilderness AT tires were equally problematic regardless of the plant in which they were manufactured in, meaning all plants including Decatur, joliette, quebec, & wilson, nc. My wife and I continue to be concerned about the safety of our vehicle and the lack of objective evidence that only the Decatur tires are at risk. I believe it is time for either Ford or Firestone come forward and take responsibility for all wilderness ats and responsibly recall & replace. How many more deaths need to occur? it appears that the govindjee report raises enough question for the NHTSA to take the lead and demand an immediate recall of all wilderness ats. Based on this report it is clear to me I need to buy non-Firestone replacements. The unfortunate situation is that the unsuspecting purchaser must pay the price, when Ford/Firestone is responsible. I was traveling on rt 7 at approx 40mph, that was below the posted speed limit because we had just expierenced a snow storm and the roads were not very clear. As I slowed down to better hear what was going on I had started to hear the sound a flat tire makes, so I pulled off at the next exit and saw that my tire was flat and called aaa. They had told me to report the problem because it was a Firestone tire and it may be one of the recalled tires. I had my tires checked some time ago when the recall first happened but I was informed my tires were not part of the recall even though they were the wilderness ats. I feel there must be some kind of defect for this to happen because I am positive I did not hit anything in the snow so I don't know what else could have caused this to happen. While traveling on the freeway, I noticed a slight vibration. A short time later, I felt the vibration again and the tire blew. I was traveling at 60mph. Fortunately, no one was injured. I contacted Ford roadside assistance and they came to exchange the tire with the spare. I then drove the vehicle to a Ford dealer near where I work (magic Ford, valencia, ca). I requested that all five tires be replaced along with the rim on which the tire blew. It was damaged beyond repair. I have received a bill for $1,020 from magic Ford, and do not feel that I should be obligated to have to pay. Although the exact model of tire is not on the recall list, it is obvious that this is clearly a manufacturer's defect. I am in possession of the tire and all surrounding paperwork.
